Notes: Summary Human neutrophils preincubated with chemotactic factors showed enhanced OPZ-induced oxygen consumption. Maximum capacity of neutrophils to consume oxygen was found to be limited for both FMLP-treated cells and control cells. But with lower doses of OPZ, FMLP-treated cells consumed more oxygen than control cells.

Notes: Summary Lipid peroxides in rabbit erythrocytes and plasma were determined while anemia was induced by daily bleeding. They increased as reticulocytes increased and returned to normal with the morphological transformation to mature cells.

Notes: Abstract This report deals with the large intracytoplasmic hyaline inclusions observed in hippocampal large pyramidal cells of two Holstein-Friesian cattle. These inclusions were round to elongated polyhedral in shape with consistently homogeneous glassy appearance; they varied in size and were positive for the periodic acid-Schiff reaction and silver impregnation. Electron microscopic examination revealed that the inclusions consisted of granular materials showing moderate electron density and were bounded by a unit membrane. On the external surface of the unit membrane, there were direct connections to cellular organelles, including ribosome, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria. These findings suggest that the inclusions might be derived from neuronal endoplasmic reticulum.

Notes: Abstract Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare congenital anomalies that represent malformations of the embryonic foregut and are morphologically expressed as maldevelopments of the respiratory system. Because of the low prevalence of these tumors, their imaging features have seldom been described. We present the computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a case of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst.

Notes: Summary Serum opsonic activity against zymosan was found to be decreased more markedly in highly diluted O type serum than in the other 3 types, among which no difference was noted. Heat-killed bacteria were equally well opsonized with any type of serum. This peculiar activity of O type serum against zymosan was not affected by the removal of isohemagglutinins. No inhibitory activity was demonstrable in O type serum.

Notes: Summary Reactivity of scleroderma fibroblasts to lymphoid cell-derived fibroblast growth factor (FGF) was assessed in this study. The fibroblasts from the sclerotic lesion failed to respond to FGF, whereas those from scleroedematous lesions responded equally to normal fibroblast. Response of the fibroblast from sclerotic lesion was also lower than that of the fibroblast from mature scar. Fibroblasts obtained from three different layers of healthy skin, papillary dermis, reticular dermis, and reticular-subcutaneous layer, responded equally to FGF, whereas the fibroblast of reticular dermis from sclerotic lesion failed to respond to FGF. It is suggested that the fibroblast of reticuar dermis in scleroderma is variously activated by some unknown factors, so that they do not have enough reserve to respond to further stimuli.

Notes: Abstract The quadriceps femoris muscle and the muscularis mucosae of the rectum from two children with mitochondrial myopathic syndrome associated with lactic acidosis were studied by electron microscopy. Striking morphological abnormalities of mitochondria were noted not only in the skeletal but also in the smooth muscle cells. Endothelial cells of blood capillaries distributed in these affected muscles were so greatly swollen that the capillary lumen was almost occluded. In contrast, surface epithelial and glandular epithelial cells of the rectum contained normal mitochondria, and fenestrated capillaries in the propria mucosae remained intact. Long-term ischemia resulting from occlusive changes of the capillary wall may be responsible for the mitochondrial alterations of muscle cells.

Notes: Abstract In a patient with typical copper deficiency, we found superoxide dismutase (SOD, 1.15.1.1) activity and copper in erythrocytes to be decreased to 52% and 46% of age-matched controls, respectively. However, these were not so markedly depleted as plasma copper (17%) or ceruloplasmin (20%). After copper replacement therapy, erythrocyte copper and SOD activity gradually returned to the control levels. Although certain abnormalities reported in copper deficiency in animals were expected, osmotic fragility of erythrocytes of the patient was normal and damage of the liver and heart were not a feature as far as could be determined by electrocardiography and routine laboratory examinations. Probably a decrease of SOD to this extent is not severe enough to lead to superoxide-induced damage.

Notes: : Chemical analysis showed soft snow crab muscle to have a higher water content and a lower protein content than hard crab muscle. Histological observations revealed frequent occurrences of disintegrated regions in muscle fibers and pericellular connective tissue of soft snow crab muscle tissue. Salinity of the free body fluid recovered from the meropodites of the soft snow crab was significantly higher than that of the hard snow crab. Sensory evaluation revealed differences in texture and taste between soft and hard crabs, which corresponded well to their compositional and histological differences.
