Notizen: We developed a polarization modulation spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) region for magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements. We used a polarizing undulator with crossed and retarded magnetic fields. It enables us to obtain radiation adjusting the polarization states arbitrarily and rapidly. The undulator is essential in our polarization modulation spectroscopy for MCD study in the XUV region. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Calculations of the radiation from a four-period polarizing undulator by use of the general radiation equation and numerical integration including the effects of electron-beam emittance, energy spread, and finite observation distance are presented. Accurate electron-beam profiles have been experimentally determined and modeled by the Monte Carlo method. Good agreement is found in spectral intensity between the measured and calculated spectra. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Regional variation in the P–T path of the Sambagawa metamorphic rocks, central Shikoku, Japan has been inferred from compositional zoning of metamorphic amphibole. Rocks constituting the northern part (Saruta River area) exhibit a hairpin type P–T path, where winchite/actinolite grew at the prograde stage, the peak metamorphism was recorded by the growth of barroisite to hornblende and sodic amphibole to winchite/actinolite grew at the retrograde stage. In the southern part (Asemi River area), rocks exhibit a clockwise type P–T path, where barroisite to hornblende core is rimmed by winchite to actinolite. The difference in P–T path could suggest a faster exhumation rate (i.e. more rapid decompression) in the southern than in the northern part. On the other hand, physical conditions of deformation during the exhumation stage have been independently inferred from microstructures in deformed quartz. Recrystallized quartz grains in rocks from the low-grade (chlorite and garnet) zones are much more stretched in the southern part (aspect ratio ≥ 4.0) than in the northern part (aspect ratio〈 4.0), indicating a higher strain rate in the former than in the latter. These facts may indicate that the exhumation and strain rates are correlated (i.e. the exhumation rate increases with increasing the strain rate). The difference in the exhumation rate inferred from amphibole zoning between the northern and southern parts could be explained by an extensional model involving normal faulting, where the lower plate can be exhumed faster than the upper plate due to the displacement along the fault. Furthermore, the model may explain the positive correlation between the exhumation and strain rates, because the lower plate tended to support more stress than the upper plate.

Notizen: Abstract— —An enzyme catalysing the transfer of sulphate from 3′-phosphoadenylsulphate to serotonin was purified from rabbit brain. The purification procedure involved ammonium sulphate fractionation of the 200,000 g supernatant of rabbit brain homogenate, treatment with alumina Cγ, and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The enzyme was purified 67-fold from the 200,000 g supernatant of the brain homogenate. The intracranial distribution of the sulphotransferase was investigated and the cerebellum found to have rather high activity. The sulphotransferase activities of rabbit, dog, rat and bovine brains were compared; rabbit brain had the highest activity, followed by dog, rat and bovine brain.

Notizen: This study investigated the effects of novelty stress on neuroendocrine activities and running performance in Thoroughbred horses. First, to examine the neuroendocrine responses to novelty stress, we exposed horses to two types of novel environmental stimuli (audiovisual or novel field stimuli). After the stimuli, plasma concentrations of vasopressin, catecholamines and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), as well as heart rates, were significantly increased in each experiment. Second, we investigated neuroendocrine activities during incremental exercise. Plasma concentrations of vasopressin, catecholamines, ACTH and blood lactate increased as the exercise load increased. Finally, we investigated the effects of novelty stimuli on neuroendocrine activities and running performance during supra-maximal exercise (110% VHRmax). When the novelty stimuli were presented to horses, the increases in plasma vasopressin and catecholamines due to exercise load were significantly smaller than those in the control experiments. Blood lactate during supra-maximal exercise was also significantly lower and total run time until exhaustion was prolonged in the novel environmental stimuli compared to the control. These results suggest that novelty stimuli facilitate vasopressin release from the posterior pituitary in addition to activating the sympatho-adrenomedullary and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axes in thoroughbred horses, and increase exercise capacity, resulting in improvement of running performance during supra-maximal exercise.

Notizen: The effect of electrically evoked dendritic vasopressin release on noradrenaline release into the hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus was assessed by in vivo microdialysis in conjunction with high pressure liquid chromatography and electrochemical detection. Electrical activation of magnocellular supraoptic neurones by stimulation of their axons at the level of the neural lobe significantly increased noradrenaline release into the nucleus (2.5-fold, P〈0.03). This increase was completely blocked by administration of a nonpeptide vasopressin V1a receptor antagonist via the microdialysis probe. These data suggest that dendritically released vasopressin facilitates noradrenaline release into the hypothalamic nucleus.

Notizen: We examined the role of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the control of noradrenaline release in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) using a microdialysis method in urethane-anaesthetized rats. Local application of 0.5 mm NMDA into the SON by retrodialysis decreased noradrenaline content in the dialysate from the SON. On the other hand, MK-801, a channel blocker of NMDA receptors, or D(–)2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (AP-5), a competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, increased the basal noradrenaline content. Tetrodotoxin did not completely block the noradrenaline increase after NMDA antagonists. Infusion of Ca2+-free solution containing Ni2+ and Cd2+, or a mixture of ω-agatoxin IVA and ω-conotoxin GVIA, voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels blockers, did not block noradrenaline increase after AP-5, but blocked noradrenaline increase after high K+. Infusion of intracellular Ca2+ blockers, thapsigargin or TMB-8, impaired noradrenaline increase after AP-5 but not that after high K+. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that activation of an NMDA receptor inhibits an intracellular Ca2+ store-dependent noradrenaline release from nerve terminals in the SON.
