    Notes: SUMMARY: The physical properties of the major muscles of the round from 30 crossbred beef and 20 straightbred dairy carcasses were studied. Sex, sire and body type were related to these properties. Generally, the steers had longer, heavier and lighter-colored muscles than the heifers. A negative relationship was noted between the specific gravity and reflectance values for the crossbred muscles. The semimembranosus muscle was heaviest and accounted for the highest percent of the rough round in certain beef and dairy sire groups. In the dairy cattle, the weight of the biceps femoris muscle was also affected by sire. Heritability estimates indicated that the weight of the semimembranosus was highly heritable and its percent of the rough round moderately heritable in both beef and dairy cattle. The dairy b. femoris weight and circumference were also moderately heritable. Color reflectance, specific gravity, pH, length and circumference/length ratio were not observed to be heritable physical properties.

    Notes: Abstract An important task related to the formulation of planetary quarantine standards is the achievement of an acceptable compromise between (1) the prevention of planetary contamination and (2) the impact of quarantine requirements on the conduct of planetary missions. Such a task is a continuing effort, which must take all pertinent new information into account as it becomes available. This paper provides an analytical framework for the assessment of data which have become available during the past year or which are currently being evolved. In particular an evaluation is made of the probability of release of viable organisms from the spacecraft as a function of: (1) impact velocity magnitudes and the probability of their occurrence; (2) the degree of equipment fracturing at impact velocities; and (3) the number of viable organisms in spacecraft materials. Work being done to quantify each of three types of contamination, i.e. that on open surfaces, mated surfaces and buried contamination, is described in the context of seeking an approach to spacecraft sterilization that would be most compatible with the implementation of planetary missions. It is concluded that the results of work now in progress on spacecraft-material fracturing, on the estimation of buried contamination loads, and on microbial resistance on mated surfaces, may lead to less severe dry-heat sterilization of planetary spacecraft than had been considered necessary in the past.

    Notes: Abstract  Rationale: The reinforcing effects of many psychomotor stimulants have been related to increased dopaminergic neurotransmission. Drugs that block dopamine (DA) uptake have generally been found to function as positive reinforcers. Benztropine (BZT) and several of its halogenated analogs have previously been characterized as potent DA-uptake inhibitors with behavioral profiles that indicate diminished psychomotor stimulant effects relative to cocaine. Objectives: The present experiments were designed to examine, in rhesus monkeys, the reinforcing effects of the DA-uptake inhibitor BZT and two chloro-analogs 3’-C1-BZT and 4’-Cl-BZT, and to compare self-administration and binding profiles. Methods: Four rhesus monkeys self-administered cocaine i.v. under a fixed-ratio 10 (FR10) schedule until stable responding was established. Saline, and various doses of cocaine, BZT, and the BZT analogs were then made available for self-administration. Binding of these compounds to monoaminergic and cholinergic sites in monkey brain were determined using standard radioligand binding techniques. Results: Self-administration was maintained by both 3’-C1-BZT and 4’-Cl-BZT, but not by BZT. Results suggested that 3’-C1-BZT and 4’-Cl-BZT were weak positive reinforcers. BZT and analogs bound DA transporters (DAT) with affinities higher than that of cocaine and had affinity for muscarinic binding sites. Conclusions: Surprisingly, high affinity at DATs was associated with weak or no reinforcing effects. The mechanism(s) that may underlie this dissociation between DAT actions and reinforcing effects remains to be established. These data support the proposal that a lead for the discovery of a pharmacotherapeutic agent for cocaine abuse may come from this group of compounds.
