Notes: Abstract Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) contents in the otoliths of yellow and silver European eels [Anguilla anguilla (L.)] collected from coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lake in Sweden were examined by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry with an electron microprobe. The mean Sr/Ca ratios from elver check to otolith edge were significantly higher for the eels from coastal waters (5.39 ± 1.09‰) than for those from the lake (0.71 ± 0.89‰). The evidence indicates that European eels in the Baltic Sea do not necessarily migrate into freshwater streams during the growth phase.

Notes: The dispersion of the first molecular hyperpolarizability β of strongly charge-transfer chromophores is investigated. The investigation extends the well-known Oudar–Chemla nonresonant two-level model into the resonant regime. An equation for β that includes the effect of dephasing and vibrational structure of electronic states is derived. It is shown that if only the dephasing mechanism is included in the two-level model, the intrinsic hyperpolarizability β0 calculated using the Oudar–Chemla equation from the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experimental data will decrease with decreasing the excitation wavelength. The trend is reversed when the vibrational structure is also incorporated. It is concluded that in order to obtain a consistent β0 in the HRS experiment using an excitation wavelength in the resonance regime, it is inadequate to include only the dephasing mechanism. The vibronic structure also plays an important role and needs to be considered in the data analysis in order to obtain a β0 to agree with the off-resonance experimental result. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Gelation properties of paddlefish surimi were investigated with different heating procedures. Without pre-incubation, gel strength of paddlefish surimi increased as temperature increased from 40 to 60 °C. Pre-incubation at 40 °C caused myosin degradation and reduced gel strength by 55% compared to the control. Pre-incubation at 70 °C followed by cooking at 90 °C produced gels with maximum strength. Isothermal heating between 40 and 50 °C produced rheological transitions between 0 and 15 min. Beef plasma powder reduced myosin degradation and enhanced gelation of surimi incubated around 40 °C. These results indicated that the gel-weakening phenomenon in paddlefish surimi was due to the degradation of myosin by some endogenous protease(s).

Notes: Physical changes in chicken gastrocnemius myofibrils incubated in 0.1 to 1.0 M NaCl solutions with or without 10 mM ortho-(P), pyro-(PP), tripoly-(TPP) or hexameta- (HMP) phosphate at pH 6.0 were examined by phase-contrast microscopy, electrophoresis, and solubility. PP and TPP performed similarly in promoting protein extraction, P had no apparent effect, and HMP exhibited an intermediate effect. PP, TPP, and HMP treatments markedly improved protein solubility in 0.3 and 0.4 M NaCl through the release of myosin, but the phosphate effect diminished in ≥ 0.6 M NaCl. Overall, phosphates influenced the ultrastructure of myofibrils and extraction of their constituents in the order: PP ∼ TPP 〉 HMP 〉 P ∼ nonphosphate control.

Notes: Rheological and gelation characteristics of a specific degree of deacetylation (dd 50 to 99) and concentration (0.5% to 1.5%) of chitosan and chitosan/SSP (salt-soluble protein) mixtures were studied. Results suggested that SSP thermal gelation was interfered with by the positive charges of amino groups of the chitosan molecule. Regardless of degree of deacetylation, increasing chitosan concentration caused stronger interference on SSP gelation and lowered complex modulus [G*]. Loss tangent of chitosan/SSP gel decreased with increasing temperature. Higher level (1.5%) of dd 99 chitosan had the lowest G*, which resulted from ionic interaction with SSP. SDS-PAGE revealed protein aggregation, indicating possible covalent bond formation.

Notes: We deposited polymer-like a-C:H films using the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique and characterized film microstructure by variable-energy positron lifetime spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. It was confirmed that PL occurs from a chromophore in a sp2 cluster as a result of fast recombination of a photoexcited electron-hole pair. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy showed that positronium (Ps) formation takes place via electron-positron recombination in the sp3 matrix. The lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) in our a-C:H films was similar to that in polyethylene, indicating their polymer-like nature. The relative PL efficiency increased by about an order of magnitude with increasing film band gap from 1.3 to 3.4 eV, which can be related to the decreasing concentration of nonradiative centers. On the other hand, Ps formation was much less influenced by the band gap and nonradiative centers. Comparison of this result with that for polyethylene mixed with carbon-black nanoparticles, where a considerable reduction in Ps formation was observed, showed that nonradiative centers were of a different nature from the defects on the carbon nanoparticle surface. This work demonstrated the usefulness of positron lifetime spectroscopy combined with optical measurements to study the nanostructure of a-C:H. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first molecular hyperpolarizabilities (β) of a series of charge-transfer nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores are measured with the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) technique using two excitation wavelengths at 1064 and 1907 nm. The 1907 nm wavelength is the longest excitation wavelength used for the HRS experiment. For some of these chromophores, β values in excess of 1000×10−30 esu at 1907 nm are obtained, and due to two-photon enhancement, even greater β values are found with the 1064 nm excitation. Chromophores with such large hyperpolarizability are expected to have potential applications in practical electro-optical devices. The dispersion of β is analyzed using a two-vibronic-state model developed previously in our laboratory. The study shows that it is necessary to consider the vibronic structure of the chromophore in the excited state in order to account for the behavior of the first molecular hyperpolarizability of the charge-transfer NLO chromophores. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Circumscribed retinal lesions in adult cats result in a reorganization of circuitry in area 17 such that neurons in the lesion projection zone (LPZ) can now be activated, not from their original receptive fields (RFs) but from regions of normal retina adjacent to the lesion (‘ectopic’ RFs). We have studied this phenomenon further by making circumscribed monocular retinal lesions in 8-week-old kittens and recording responses to visual stimuli of neurons in the LPZ of area 17 when these cats reached adulthood. These responses have been compared with those in adult-lesioned cats either of relatively short postlesion survival (2–24 weeks) or long postlesion survival (3.5–4.5 years). In both kitten-lesioned and adult-lesioned animals most LPZ neurons recorded from the supragranular layers (II and III) not only exhibited new ectopic RFs when stimuli were presented via the lesioned eye but the RF properties (e.g. the sizes of excitatory RFs, orientation and direction selectivities, velocity preferences and upper cut-off velocities) were often indistinguishable from those seen when stimuli were presented via the nonlesioned eye. Similarly, in both kitten-lesioned and adult-lesioned animals, most LPZ neurons recorded from the granular and infragranular layers (IV, V, VI), like those recorded from the supragranular layers, were binocular. However, in adult-lesioned but not in kitten-lesioned animals, the responses and the upper cut-off velocities of LPZ cells recorded from the granular and infragranular layers to stimuli presented via ectopic RFs tended to be, respectively, substantially weaker and lower than those for stimuli presented via the nonlesioned eye. The age-related laminar differences in reorganizational plasticity of cat striate cortex correlate with the lamino-temporal pattern of distribution of N-methyl-d-aspartate glutamate receptors in striate cortex.
