    Notes: Abstract Phase transitions caused by the redistribution of quasiparticle occupation numbers n(p) in homogeneous Fermi systems with particle repulsion are analyzed. The phase diagram of a strongly correlated Fermi system, when drawn in the coordinates “density ρ-dimensionless coupling constant η,” resembles a Washington pie for a rather broad class of interactions. Its upper part is “filled” with Fermi condensate, and the bottom part is filled with normal Fermi liquid. Both parts are separated by a narrow interlayer of Lifshitz phase with a multiply connected Fermi surface.

    Notes: Abstract The pairing gap in semi-infinite nuclear matter has been calculated microscopically by solving the gap equation for a nonlocal interaction with the aid of the method proposed by V.A. Khodel, A.V. Khodel, and J.W. Clark [Nucl. Phys. A 598, 390 (1996)] for the case of infinite nuclear matter. The calculation employs the effective pairing interaction obtained previously for semi-infinite geometry on the basis of the separable 3×3 representation of the Paris nucleon-nucleon potential. The gap found in this way changes sharply in the surface region, where it has a pronounced maximum. The dependence of the surface effect on the chemical potential of nuclear matter has been investigated.

    Notes: Abstract The effective pairing interaction in the 1 S 0 channel as calculated microscopically within the Brueckner method for a planar slab of nuclear matter by using the separable version of the Paris nucleon-nucleon potential is investigated. The effective interaction is determined for the model space including all negative-energy single-particle states. An analysis is performed for two values of the chemical potential, μ=−8 and −4 MeV. It is shown that, to a high precision, the effective interaction can be approximated by the off-shell T matrix for free nucleon-nucleon interaction, the T matrix in question being taken at a negative value of the total energy of two nucleons E=2μ.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of the present case-control study was to ascertain whether, in adults, yearly repeated anti-influenza vaccinations (AIV) enhance protection against cutaneous melanoma (CM), as do repeated febrile infections. Ninety-nine new cases of histologically confirmed CM and 104 healthy controls (matched to cases for sex, age, and skin colour) selected from the general population were examined in order to ascertain their skin type, the number of nevi on both arms, and the intensity of freckles on the face and the arms; in these subjects, a structured questionnaire was used to obtain information on age, sex, education, social class, exposure and susceptibility to sunlight, history of febrile infectious diseases, and vaccinations. The odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated by commonly used methods and by fitting models of logistic regression. The risk of CM was reduced in subjects with a history of febrile (temperature above 38.5 °C) infections in the 5 years prior to CM surgery (cases) or interview (controls), but was increased in those with voluntary exposure to sunlight in tropical countries. By holding the above factors constant at logistic regression analysis, it was found that a history of repeated AIV (3–5 times in the last 5 years) halved the risk (OR: 0.43; CI: 0.19–1.00; p 〈 0.05). With the variable `nevi on arms' included, the protective influence of repeated AIVs was observed in a similar magnitude. The inverse relationship found between melanoma and influenza vaccinations is unlikely to have depended on a bias, even if based on replies in a questionnaire, because neither the interviewers nor the interviewers were informed in advance of the working hypothesis.

    Notes: Abstract. The surface behavior of the pairing gap previously studied for semi-infinite nuclear matter is analyzed in the slab geometry. The gap-shape function is calculated in two cases: a) pairing with the Gogny force in a hard-wall potential and b) pairing with the separable Paris interaction in a Saxon-Woods mean-field potential. It is shown that the surface features are preserved in the case of slab geometry, being almost independent of the width of the slab. It is also demonstrated that the surface enhancement is strengthened as the absolute value of chemical potential $\vert\mu\vert$ decreases which simulates the approach to the nucleon drip line.-1
