    Notes: Data from two twin studies are examined to assess genetic and environmental influences on literacy, and the etiological relationship between language and literacy. Study 1 used children from 86 families previously recruited for a study of the genetics of specific language impairment (see Bishop, North, & Donlan, 1995), who completed tests of single-word reading and spelling. Literacy problems in this sample were common, were strongly heritable, and showed a close genetic relationship with poor nonword repetition. Study 2 included two subsets of children: 37 twin pairs who had taken part in study 1, 3 to 4 years earlier, and 100 twin pairs recruited from the general population by Bishop et al. (1999). All children were given a standardised test of nonword reading. There was no genetic influence on nonword reading ability, either across the normal range, or at the lower extreme, though there were significant associations with some social variables. However, bivariate DeFries–Fulker analysis suggested that in this study, as in study 1, there was shared genetic variance between poor nonword repetition and literacy deficits. It is concluded that poor nonword repetition, which is known to be highly heritable, puts the child at risk for literacy problems. However, in a general population sample, such as that included in study 2, poor nonword repetition is a relatively rare correlate of literacy problems, which are more likely to have an environmental origin. Thus the different pattern of results in the two studies can be explained if one assumes that genetic influences are substantial only when literacy problems are severe and/or accompanied by oral language difficulties.

    Notes: The Tower of Hanoi (ToH) task was given to 238 children aged from 7 to 15 years, and 20 adults. Individual variation within an age band was substantial. ToH score did not correlate significantly with Verbal IQ, nor with ability to inhibit a prepotent response. We readministered the ToH to 45 children after 30 to 40 days. The test-retest correlation of .5 is low in relation to accepted psychometric standards, though at least as high as reliability of the related Tower of London (ToL) in adults. The reasons for low reliability remain unclear; task novelty did not seem to be involved, as children did not improve on retest. We conclude that it is not safe to use this test to index integrity or maturation of underlying neurological systems in children. We compared our results with three published studies using the ToL with children, and found similar levels of performance on problems involving the same number of moves. Another study using automated ToL obtained much poorer scores, suggesting that computerised presentation may impair children's performance.

    Notes: The literacy skills of 56 school leavers from the Bishop and Edmundson (1987) cohort of preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI) were assessed at 15 years. The SLI group performed worse on tests of reading, spelling, and reading comprehension than age-matched controls and the literacy outcomes were particularly poor for those with Performance IQ less than 100. The rate of specific reading retardation in the SLI group had increased between the ages of 8½ and 15 years and there had been a substantial drop in reading accuracy, relative to age. However, over 35% had reading skills within the normal range and those who had had isolated impairments of expressive phonology had a particularly good outcome. Our findings highlight the limitations of discrepancy definitions of dyslexia that do not take account of the changing demands of reading over time. We argue that children's phonological difficulties place them at risk of literacy failure at the outset of reading and that later, impairments of other language skills compromise development to adult levels of fluency.

    Notes: A 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source with a single mode resonator is being developed to produce high efficient single charged ion beams from exiguous gaseous elements. The source is intended to produce short and long half-life radioactive ion beams as well as stable ion beams for low and high energy experiments at ISAC [J. M. Poutissou, Proceedings of the ISAC Workshop (1994)]. It is obvious that for the radioactive ion beam production, the gas and ion transient time and the overall ionization efficiency are the most important parameters. The transient time is measured using ultrafast peizoelectric gas valve which could operate up to a frequency of 2 kHz. A unique feature of the source is that the plasma chamber is considerably smaller (∼170 times) than its resonance cavity in order to minimize the transient time. Quartz tubes with various diameters (5–20 mm) and 80 mm long are tested as the plasma chamber and the results are discussed. The effect of the transfer tube length, which links the target and the ion source on the transient time is also described. An axially symmetric five electrode extraction system containing three multiaperture electrodes was used to extract the beam. The source, including ECR coils and extraction system is placed in the middle of a 60 cm×60 cm×90 cm vacuum box to simulate the ISAC target module conditions. The preliminary results of the molecular and ion transient time studies, beam efficiency studies are also presented in this article. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In November of 1998, the ISAC radioactive beam facility at TRIUMF started delivering on-line isotope separated radioactive beams to experiments. A surface ionization source developed for ISAC has been used to commission the mass separator and beam transport systems and is providing radioactive beams to the first generation of ISAC experiments. The ion source is integral with the radioactive beam production target and is designed to be simple, radiation hard, inexpensive, and easily exchanged by remote-handling techniques. The ion source and its extraction column are suspended at the bottom of ∼2 m of steel shielding incorporated in the target module. The module is suspended in a vacuum tank with primary and secondary vacuum systems. All services for the target/ion source and beam extraction system are ducted through the module shielding. The first sets of beam transport elements and beam diagnostic devices are similarly suspended in vacuum at the bottom of two additional shielded modules. Ion beam characteristics can be routinely monitored during on-line operation by a system of Faraday cups, wire scanners, "harp" monitors, and a novel emittance measurement apparatus that can measure beam emittance in both horizontal and vertical planes. The diagnostics devices are capable of resolving beam signals down to the 10 pA range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

It has also been hypothesized that HLA and TCR allelic interactions may have a strong influence on predisposition to allergic disease.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveThis study was performed to investigate the influence of HLA-DRB and DQB1 alleles and D14S50 alleles (adjacent to TCR A/D locus on 14q11.2), individually and in-combination, on total serum IgE levels, and on the development of specific allergies.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉MethodsWe performed an association study between HLA-DRB, HLA-DQB1 polymorphisms, D14S50 alleles, total serum IgE expression and specific allergies to house dust mite, grass pollens and cat fur. A sample of 181 individuals was drawn from a larger set of 2415 adults, sampled at random from a district in Nottingham.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsStrong association was observed between HLA-DRB1*0701 allele and high total serum IgE expression (P 〈 0.001). D14S50 alleles alone showed no evidence for independent association. However, there was a significant interaction between DRB1*0701 and D14S50 allele 170 such that, when both were present, there was a further increase in total serum IgE levels.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionThis study suggests that DRB1*0701 allele is involved in the modulation of total serum IgE, and that there is an interaction between DRB1*0701 and a marker adjacent to TCR A/D in the control of IgE expression.

    Notes: We review studies of the interactions between magnetic order and the flux line lattice (FLL) in the (RE)Ni2B2C intermetallic borocarbides for (RE)=Tm and Er using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and magneto-transport. For (RE)=Tm the magnetic order and the FLL assume a common symmetry, sharing a phase transition at ∼2 kOe, despite an order of magnitude difference in periodicity. For (RE)=Er, the penetration depth λ and the coherence length ξ, both of which are derived from the FLL form factor, are modified near TN=6 K by a theoretically predicted weakly divergent pairbreaking. Finally, below 2.3 K, (RE)=Er shows a coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity. This state reveals a highly disordered FLL and a striking increase in the critical current, both arising from the strong ferromagnetic pairbreaking. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
