Notes: High dielectric CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) thin films were epitaxially grown on (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Microstructural studies by x-ray diffraction, pole figure measurements, and transmission electron microscopy show that the as-grown films are good single crystalline quality with an interface relationship of (001)CCTO//(001)LAO and [100]CCTO//[100]LAO. Dielectric property measurements show that the films have an extremely high dielectric constant with value of 10 000 at 1 MHz at room temperature. It is interesting to note that the twinned substrate results in the formation of twinning or dislocations inside the CCTO film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Microsporogenesis of two interspecific allotetraploid somatic hybrids, i.e.‘Hamlin’ sweet orange +‘Rough Lemon’ (HR) and ‘Key’ lime +‘Valencia’ sweet orange (KV), was examined and compared with their corresponding diploid fusion parents. Meiotic analysis revealed that only 13.2 and 18.0% of the meiocytes exhibited normal tetrad formation in HR and KV somatic hybrid plants, respectively, and irregular chromosome behaviour with univalent or multivalent pairing occurred. Moreover, meiotic abnormalities such as chromosome bridges, chromosomes orientated away from the equatorial plate, especially lagging chromosomes, which resulted in different sizes of pollen grain, were frequently observed in both somatic hybrids. As expected, the percentage of chromosome abnormalities was much lower in their corresponding diploid fusion parents. HR and KV had 15.4 and 7.2% pollen germinability, respectively, intermediate between their corresponding fusion parents. The meiotic behaviour of these somatic hybrids provided valuable information for their practical utilization in a citrus breeding programme.

Notes: Dielectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 thin films were epitaxially grown on (001) MgO by using pulsed laser ablation. Microstructure studies from x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy suggest that the as-grown films are c-axis oriented with an interface relationship of 〈100〉BSTO//〈100〉MgO. A room temperature coupled microwave phase shifter has been developed with a phase shift near 250° at 23.675 GHz under an electrical field of 40 V/μm and a figure of merit of ∼53°/dB. The performance of the microwave phase shifter based on the epitaxial Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 thin films on (001) MgO is close to that needed for practical applications in wireless communications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: ABT-229 is a potent motilin agonist without significant antibiotic activity. It has been shown to improve gastric emptying in humans and to increase lower oesophageal sphincter pressure in cats.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To assess the efficacy of four different doses of ABT-229 (1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg b.d.) compared to placebo in the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, and to determine its safety in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:In a double-blind, multicentre study, 324 patients with heartburn were randomized to receive four different doses of ABT-229 or placebo for 8 weeks. The efficacy was evaluated by Patient Symptom Questionnaire, daily diary, endoscopy and global evaluation of efficacy.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:There were no statistically significant improvement scores for any of the ABT-229 treatment groups vs. the placebo group in any of the efficacy parameters. Reflux symptom scores were significantly worse after treatment in the dyspeptic group. ABT-229 appeared to be well tolerated and safe in total daily doses up to 20 mg.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:ABT-229 appears to have limited, if any, clinical utility in the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Notes: Cisapride has been shown to have not only prokinetic effects, but also salivary stimulating effects. Both of these mechanisms play an important role in the acid clearance of the oesophagus.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To access the efficacy of cisapride in facilitating acid clearance in patients with symptomatic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Fifteen older adults and 15 younger adults with symptomatic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease completed the study. The acid clearance test was accomplished by infusing 15 mL of 0.1 N HCl into the distal oesophagus, and the number of swallows was determined to achieve an oesophageal pH of 4.0. This was accomplished under baseline conditions and salivary stimulation with a peppermint lozenge. After 1 week of treatment with cisapride (10 mg, q.d.s.), the acid clearance test was repeated.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The lozenge produced a significant decrease in the number of swallows compared to baseline in both groups (P 〈 0.01). There was a significant decrease in the number of swallows after the treatment with cisapride compared to baseline in both groups (P 〈 0.01). No significant difference was found in the number of swallows when comparing cisapride with lozenge.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Cholinergic stimulation of salivation is an effective means of facilitating oesophageal acid clearance. Drugs, such as 5 hydroxytriptamine (5-HT)4-receptor agonists, should be considered as potentially important compounds in the treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
