Notes: Electroluminescent ZnS:Mn thin films have been codoped with KCl via an ex situ deposition and diffusion process. The brightness, efficiency, and stability of sputter deposited ZnS:Mn alternating current thin film electroluminescent devices have been greatly improved over untreated devices. Potassium chloride doping is shown to have a modest fluxing effect on the grain size of ZnS:Mn films, particularly in the region of the film where nucleation occurs. However, improved electroluminescence is postulated to be strongly influenced by doping control of electric fields and injected charge. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A relationship between Borrelia burgdorferi and primary cutaneous B-cell lymphoma (PCBCL) has recently been confirmed following demonstration of the organism in lesional skin of patients with PCBCL. We report herein two cases of B. burgdorferi-associated PCBCL which strengthen this association by demonstrating the organism in cutaneous B-cell infiltrates present at sites in which PCBCL subsequently developed. All studies were performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. These were examined by routine light microscopy and immunohistochemically by a standard streptavidin–biotin–complex technique. Genotypic studies were also undertaken using semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement, and nested PCR for B. burgdorferi flagellin gene. Both patients presented with erythematous skin lesions, biopsy of which showed dense perivascular infiltrates comprising small T-lymphocytes and collections of B-blasts. Primary cutaneous marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) developed subsequently in both cases at the same site. PCR for B. burgdorferi flagellin gene was positive in the perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates and the succeeding lymphomas in both patients. These results show that, at least in some instances, PCBCL arises from chronically stimulated lymphoid tissue acquired in the skin in response to B. burgdorferi infection. This may have significant therapeutic implications and warrant further studies on the extent of this association.

Notes: : Thermal inactivation D (decimal reduction time at a certain heating temperature) values of Escherichia coli O157:H7 at 55 °C to 70 °C were 21.36 to 0.031 min in raw franks and 24.91 to 0.038 min in fully cooked franks. Although statistically significant differences were found on the D values of E. coli O157:H7 between raw and fully cooked franks, the z value of E. coli O157:H7 in raw franks (5.07 °C) and fully cooked franks (5.08 °C) was not significantly different. The obtained D and z values were used to validate the process lethality of the pathogen in the raw franks that were processed according to a multistage cooking/cooling schedule or in the fully cooked franks that were pasteurized in-packages via steam. In this study, the calculated process lethality for both the cooking (process lethality = 254 min) and post-cook pasteurization (process lethality = 39 min) processes was far greater than the processing time that was needed for achieving a 7D reduction of E. coli O157:H7 during cooking and post-cook pasteurization of the franks.

Notes: Abstract  Background: Lens capsular sac explants from human cadaver eyes were used to investigate posterior capsular opacification (PCO). The purpose of this study was to characterize a similar model using canine tissue and to determine whether transferrin (Tf), transforming growth factor β-2 (TGF-β2), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are secreted by lens epithelial cells (LEC) of these ex vivo sacs. Methods: The lens from canine eyes was removed by extracapsular cataract extraction, the lens sac dissected free, pinned to a petri dish, and cultured in either serum-supplemented or serum-free medium. Morphologic characteristics and growth rate to confluence on the posterior capsule were studied by phase-contrast microscopy. Vimentin, alpha smooth muscle actin, and panTGF-β expression by LEC were determined by immunohistochemistry. Tf, TGF-β2, and IGF-1 levels were measured by ELISA in the supernatant of sacs cultured in serum-free medium. Results: The mean time to confluence of LEC onto the posterior capsule was 5.4±1.1 days (n=22) and 14.7±3.7 days (n=14) for sacs in serum-supplemented and serum-free medium, respectively. Following development of confluence, explants displayed opacification and light scatter from cellular proliferation and capsular contraction. Confluent LEC expressed vimentin, alpha smooth muscle actin, and TGF-β2, and both Tf and TGF-β2 were secreted into the culture supernatant. Conclusion: Canine lens sac explants have characteristics virtually identical to those of human origin, and appear to be a useful alternative tissue source for this model when human cadaver eyes are unavailable. Tf and TGFβ-2, but not IGF-1, are secreted by LEC in explanted lens sacs and may influence the proliferation and metaplasia of LEC during the development of PCO.

Notes: Abstract The special constraint structure and large dimension are characteristic for multistage stochastic optimization. This results from modeling future uncertainty via branching process or scenario tree. Most efficient algorithms for solving this type of problems use certain decomposition schemes, and often only a part of the whole set of scenarios is taken into account in order to make the problem tractable. We propose a primal–dual method based on constraint aggregation, which constructs a sequence of iterates converging to a solution of the initial problem. At each iteration, however, only a reduced sub-problem with smaller number of aggregate constraints has to be solved. Number of aggregates and their composition are determined by the user, and the procedure for calculating aggregates can be parallelized. The method provides a posteriori estimates of the quality of the current solution approximation in terms of the objective function value and the residual. Results of numerical tests for a portfolio allocation problem with quadratic utility function are presented.
