Notes: To extend the measurement range to 100 GPa, a modified manganin gauge was prepared and examined. The modifications were focused on the package materials and technique. The manganin sensing elements were first deposited by magnetron sputtering on Al2O3 substrates, and then covered by a layer of Al2O3 films several μm thick by electron beam evaporation. After being placed on slabs of Al2O3 ceramic, the gauges were shocked to 40–80 GPa with a light gas gun. The stress-time profiles showed a good plateau of about 1 μs in duration. The initial calibration resulted in a linear curve with piezoresistance coefficient of 0.0198±0.0002 GPa−1. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Cotton fibre mutants that were fuzzless and/or lintless were crossed with each other and a normal genotype (fuzzy, linted) to produce F2 and BC1 generations. F2 segregation ratios from the cross of fuzzless-lintless × fuzzy-linted, for fuzzy-linted, fuzzless-linted and fuzzless-lintless were 45 : 15 : 4. From the cross of fuzzless-lintless × fuzzy-linted, the F2 segregation ratios were 9 : 39 : 16 whereas the BC1F1 segregation ratios from the F1 backcrossed to fuzzless-lintless were 1 : 3 : 4. These data suggest that the presence or absence of lint and fuzz are controlled by the interaction of four gene loci on non-homologous chromosomes. We designate these loci as N1, N2, Li3 and Li4, where N1 N1 confers the presence of fuzzy, N2N2 confers inhibition of fuzzy initiation and development, and duplicate gene pairs, Li3Li3 and Li4Li4, determine the presence of lint. Homozygosity for li3li3 and li4li4 might also inhibit fuzz from development. In other words, they were recessive epistatic to fuzz genes.

Notes: Abstract: The effects of ethanol concentrations of 5, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30 and 50% on the penetration of the tobacco-specific carcinogen, nitrosonornicotine (NNN), across porcine oral mucosa were examined using an in vitro perfusion system. Concentrations of ethanol of 25% and above significantly increased the permeability of oral mucosa to NNN, although this increase ceased with 50% ethanol, possibly due to a fixative effect. Nicotine is a consistent component of smoked and smokeless tobacco; the presence of 0.2% nicotine significantly increased the permeability of oral mucosa to NNN and 2% nicotine caused a further increase. Combined use of nicotine and ethanol significantly increased the penetration of NNN across oral mucosa over that of ethanol alone until the concentration of ethanol reached 50%. The results of this study suggest that the synergy between tobacco and alcohol in the etiology of oral cancer may be explained, at least in part, by the local permeabilizing effects of alcohol on the penetration of tobacco-specific (and other) carcinogens across oral mucosa.

Notes: [Auszug] In humans, ten Toll-like receptor (TLR) paralogues sense molecular components of microbes, initiating the production of cytokine mediators that create the inflammatory response. Using N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea, we induced a germline mutation called Lps2, which abolishes cytokine responses to ...
