    Notes: Abstract  The total N content in the acid forest soils studied ranged between 0.41% and 1.43%, and in more than 98% was composed of organic N. Total hydrolysable organic N, hydrolysable unknown N (HUN) and α-aminoacidic N represented around 70%, 34% and 20% of the organic N, respectively, and varied in wide ranges. The percentages of amidic N and of the organic N compounds solubilised to NH4 + were approximately 6% and 5%, respectively, and ranged in narrow intervals. Aminoglucidic N reached a maximum of 3.8% of the organic N and was undetectable in some of the samples analysed. Most of the hydrolysable N, HUN and α-aminoacidic N was solubilised with 1 N and 3 N HCl, while a high amount of the compounds recovered as NH4 + (60%) was obtained with 6 N HCl. The distribution of aminoglucidic N in the four fractions of increasing hydrolytic intensity was very irregular. The organic N composition in the 0 to 5-cm and 5 to 10-cm layers was not significantly different. The variation among samples was determined mainly by the organic N compounds less resistant to acid hydrolysis (hydrolysable N and HUN less resistant to acid hydrolysis, amidic N and labile ammoniacal N) and by all α-aminoacidic N fractions. Aminoacidic N was positively correlated with electrical conductivity and negatively correlated with exchangeable Al. The net N mineralisation over 10 weeks of incubation was positive in all the soil samples analysed. The inorganic N content after the incubation and the microbial N content were positively correlated with other variables – mainly with amidic N and α-aminoacidic N, as well as with HUN and the hydrolysable N less resistant to hydrolysis.

    Notes: We report a computer simulation study of diffusion influenced reactions in a disorder medium constituting by immobile spherical obstacles when the concentration of reagents is smaller than the concentration of obstacles. We found that the compartmentalization of the embedding medium leads to a strong decrease of the rate of the first collision between reagents and a strong increase of the rate of recollision after a no-reactive encounter. The behavior of the full rate of reaction depends on the probability that a collision leads to reaction (value of the activation energy) and on the relationship between the decrease of the rate of collision and the increase of the rate of recollision. Thus, totally diffusion controlled reactions are always unfavored in these mediums, while partially diffusion controlled reactions with very high activation energy are more favored in mediums with a bigger degree of compartmentalization. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Isothermal and non-isothermal heat resistance studies were carried out on Bacillus pumilus spores. The non-isothermal study revealed a non-linear behavior of the survivor curve, which was revealed as a tail after an isothermal study. Results indicated that the spores obtained by isolating cells from colonies of the tail section were more heat resistant than the original ones (D104°c= 0.15 and 1.9 min for spores from the original population and from the tail, respectively). Application of the Weibull distribution model to analyze the tail produced good results at the 3 temperatures studied. Nevertheless, when the model was applied to curves having both concave downward and concave upward sections a poor result was obtained, with an accuracy factor greater than 1.

    Notes: Restriction site analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for the specific identification of 3 clam species: Ruditapes decussatus (grooved carpet shell), Venerupis pullastra (pullet carpet shell), and Ruditapes philippinarum (Japanese carpet shell). PCR amplification using primers based on nucleotide sequences of Mytilus ITS regions produced a fragment of 1195 bp in R. decussatus, 1074 bp in V. pullastra, and 1188 bp inR. philippinarum. Digestion of the PCR products with endonucleases HinfI and Rsa I, followed by agarose gel electrophoresis of the digested products, yielded specific restriction profiles that enabled direct visual identification of the species analyzed.

    Notes: Nowadays, caterpillars are included among the agents that elicit contact urticaria by a non-immunologic mechanism. Our objective was to find the rôle that an IgE-mediated mechanism could have among patients with suspected contact urticaria from pine processionary caterpillars. 16 patients with suspected contact urticaria from this caterpillar were studied by prick testing and specific IgE detection by immunoblotting. 87% of the patients had a positive prick test and immunoblotting for caterpillar extract. In these allergic patients, the symptoms associated with urticaria were: angioedema (79%), conjunctivitis (36%) and severe anaphylaxis (14%). The most frequent localizations of the wheals were the neck (100%) and forearms (93%). Angioedema was more frequent on the eyelids (79%). The IgE-immunoblot detected in the caterpillar extract several reactive bands, with apparent MWs from to 45 to 4kDa. A total of 5 major allergens were identified, but a band around 14kDa proved to be the dominant allergen. Sensitization to Thaumetopoea pityocampa was found to be the most important mechanism of airborne contact urticaria from this caterpillar. Low-MW proteins are the main IgE binding components of crude caterpillar extract.

    Notes: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess a series of parameters, especially those related to iron status, that may account for differences in the anaemia of patients treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and haemodialysis (HD). Patients on CAPD (n = 37) and on haemodialysis (n = 27) were selected on the basis of clinical stability and absence of factors that may interfere with iron metabolism. Parameters measured included routine haematological and biochemical profile; serum iron metabolism (serum iron, transferrin saturation capacity, transferrin saturation index, serum ferritin); erythrocyte ferritin; bone marrow erythroid components and semiqualitative analysis of iron deposits in the bone marrow. The CAPD patients showed higher levels of haemoglobin and transferrin saturation capacity as well as lower serum ferritin than patients on haemodialysis. In the bone marrow, CAPD patients had a higher percentage of red blood cells and in those with low iron-containing macrophages a higher percentage of sideroblasts than the haemodialysis group. Erythrocyte ferritin levels were similar in both groups. These data suggest more efficient iron metabolism in CAPD patients than in patients on haemodialysis.

    Notes: This study assessed the growth and survival over a year of two groups of 4-month-old turbot Scophthalmus maximus (L.) derived from artificial fertilization with fresh (FG) and cryopreserved sperm (CG). Growth in both groups, measured monthly in terms of length and weight, were compared. Survival was also recorded. No significant differences were found when we compared weight and length data in both groups. Growth rates were similar between FG and CG young turbot during 1 year. Likewise, the same survival rate (92.2%) was found in both groups. Our results show the good survival and growth of young turbot obtained from cryopreserved sperm, and confirm the cryopreservation technique as a useful tool for raising turbot for commercial purposes.

    Notes: This study evaluated the effects of fish oil (FO) replacement by vegetable oils [soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO), linseed oil (LO)] and subsequent feeding with FO on the liver morphology of sea bream. A short-term trial (3 months) and long-term trial (6 months) were carried out feeding sea bream with the following experimental diets: FO100%; SO60% + FO40%; RO60% +FO40%; LO60% + FO40%; SO + RO +LO60% + FO40%. Finally, all groups from the long-term trial were fed with FO100% for 95 days (washout period). Liver samples were taken for histological and biochemical studies. In both the short- and long-term trials, livers of sea bream fed LO60% and SO + RO + LO60% showed a similar hepatic morphology to that observed in fish fed FO100%. In contrast, sea bream fed SO60% showed an intense steatosis, with foci of swollen hepatocytes containing numerous lipid vacuoles. After the washout period, a considerable reduction of the cytoplasmic vacuolation and the lipid vacuole accumulation were observed in the livers of fish fed the different experimental diets. The results of this study suggested that the type of non-essential fatty acid, characteristic of vegetable oils, induces the appearance of steatosis in the following order: linoleic acid 〉 linolenic acid 〉 oleic acid. However, the liver alterations found during the experimental periods with vegetable oils are reversible when the fish are re-fed with a balanced diet (FO100%), indicating the non-pathological character of these histological changes.
