    Notes: Erbium doped Al2O3 films with concentrations up to 6×1020 Er cm−3 have been prepared in a single step process by pulsed-laser deposition. Alternate ablation of Al2O3 and Er targets has been used to control the in-depth distribution and in-plane concentration of Er3+ ions independently. The characteristic Er3+ photoluminescence response at 1.53 μm has been studied as a function of the Er3+ distribution. It is found that lifetime values can be greatly increased by increasing the Er3+–Er3+ in-depth separation above 3 nm. This result can be related to a reduced Er3+–Er3+ energy migration process. The in-plane Er3+ concentration was increased by either increasing the number of pulses on the Er target or the laser energy density for ablation. By the latter method in-plane concentrations as high as 1.1×1014 Er cm−2 per layer (corresponding to 2×1020 Er cm−3) were achieved, while keeping lifetime values as high as 6 ms. This result is explained in terms of shallow Er3+ implantation during deposition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : High-pressure-treated tomato puree was investigated for changes in carotenoid extractability, antioxidant activity, glucose diffusion, and water binding. No effect of pressurization was observed in the total concentrations of the main water-insoluble antioxidants, lycopene and β-carotene, extracted with tetrahydrofuran, but lower recovery of carotenoids with petroleum ether suggested structural changes in the tomato pulp tissue, due to processing. Total antioxidant capacity of the water-soluble fraction was unchanged immediately after pressure treatment, but was better preserved during 21 d at 4 °C, compared with untreated samples. High-pressure treatment resulted also in enhanced water binding. Glucose diffusion through dialysis tubing was lower after high-pressure treatment, leading to a higher glucose retardation index.

    Notes: : The influence of high-pressure treatment on the 3 main folate species present in orange juice was assessed under conditions similar to those used in high-pressure pasteurization and sterilization using freshly squeezed orange juice and different model orange juices. The latter were used also to determine the influence of matrix components, pH, and excess ascorbic acid. Excess ascorbate strongly protected folates against pressure and heat. Pressurization at 600 MPa and 80°C affected model juice folates synergistically, and pressure increased the formation of 5,10-methenylfolate. In fresh orange juice, components other than ascorbate additionally stabilized folates, thus pressure preservation and pressure sterilization appeared very feasible.

    Notes: Tropical maize inbred lines, eight derived from a Thai synthetic population (BR-105) and 10 from a Brazilian composite population (BR-106), were assayed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms with 185 clone-enzyme combinations. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic distances among tropical maize material and their relationship to heterotic group allocation and hybrid performance. Genetic distances (GDs) were on average greater for BR-105×BR-106 lines (0.77) than for BR-106×BR-106 (0.71) and for BR-105×BR-105 (0.69) lines. Cluster analysis resulted in a clear separation of BR-105 and BR-106 populations and was according to pedigree information. Correlations of parental GDs with single crosses and their heterosis for grain yield were high for line crosses from the same heterotic group and low for line combinations from different heterotic groups. Our results suggest that RFLP-based GDs are efficient and reliable to assess and allocate genotypes from tropical maize populations into heterotic groups. However, RFLP-based GDs are not suitable for predicting the performance of line crosses from genetically different heterotic groups.

    Notes: The adult mammalian forebrain subependyma contains neural stem cells (NSCs) capable of self-renewal and multilineage differentiation. The in vivo identification of NSCs has not been definitively addressed using a loss of function approach. Using a transgenic mouse expressing herpes-simplex virus thymidine kinase from the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promotor, we have selectively killed dividing GFAP-positive cells in the presence of ganciclovir (GCV) and shown a 〉 95% loss in the numbers of NSCs, as assayed by the formation of clonally derived neurospheres in vitro. This loss is seen following 3 days of GCV exposure in vivo or in vitro only and cannot be rescued by coculturing with pure astrocyte populations or control (green fluorescent protein-expressing) subependymal cells. Exposure to GCV in vitro has no effect on adult retinal stem cells hence, we conclude that adult forebrain NSCs comprise a subpopulation of the GFAP-positive cells within the subependyma.

    Notes: Picual olive oils may represent 25% of the world olive oil production. This monovarietal oil is highly valued from a nutritional viewpoint because of its high content of monounsaturated acid and polyphenols. This study reports a method to authenticate virgin olive oils of the Picual variety. The method was based on the very low content of the lignan 1-acetoxypinoresinol in these oils. The compound, as well as the other phenolic substances, was extracted from oil by using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the extract was washed with hexane and nitrogen was bubbled into the solution. The identification and quantification of the lignan used HPLC to separate, followed by UV, electrochemical, fluorescence and mass spectrometry detection or gas chromatography (GC) coupled to a mass spectrometry detector. UV detection offered low sensitivity and peaks coeluting with 1-acetoxypinoresinol were also observed. Mass spectrometry detection clearly discriminated between olive oils of Picual variety and other Spanish varieties. However, lignans show a very high response to fluorescence excitation, this detector is cheaper than mass spectrometry detectors and therefore it was considered as more appropriate for industrial uses. Thus, the latter method allowed discrimination between thirty-eight Picual olive oils and eight oils of the Hojiblanca, Cornicabra, Empeltre and Arbequina varieties. The paper also demonstrated the possibility of analysing all the phenolic compounds in virgin olive oil by fluorescence. Using this technique an easy methodology to authenticate Picual olive oils was developed.

    Notes: The ovarian mass and gonadosomatic index (IG) of bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus, caught in the Strait of Gibraltar (Barbate) during migration to Mediterranean spawning grounds, were several times lower than those found in bluefin tuna from Mediterranean spawning grounds (Balearic Islands). Some of the bluefin tuna from Barbate (8.3%) were classified as immature (the most advanced oocytes present in the ovaries were early vitellogenic), and the majority (the remaining 91.6%) as non-spawning mature; the ovary contained late vitellogenic oocytes, but there was no sign of spawning activity. Stereological estimation indicated that the ovaries of spawning bluefin tuna from the Balearic Islands contained five-fold more highly yolked oocytes than bluefin tuna from Barbate. When breeding bluefin tuna cross the Strait of Gibraltar the gonad is at an incipient stage of maturation. The average batch fecundity estimated from stereological quantification of stage 4 (migratory-nucleus) oocytes in the specimens collected from Balearic was 92.8 oocytes g-1‘of body mass, and the spawning frequency in this area was calculated to be 1.2 days. In specimens from Barbate a relative batch fecundity of 96.3 oocytes g -1 was estimated using stage 3 (late vitellogenic) oocyte counts.

    Notes: In southern Brazil, cold (La Niña) and warm (El Niño) episodes of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon cause drought and high rainfall, respectively. The low precipitation and freshwater outflow associated with La Niña during 1995–1996 were associated with an increase in the abundance of marine species in the Patos Lagoon estuary. During the 1997–1998 El Niño, high precipitation and river discharge were associated with low abundance of marine species in the estuary. ANOVA results showed a higher abundance during La Niña than El Niño for estuarine resident (RES) and estuarine dependent (DEP) fishes. During La Niña catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of RES increased from the marine to estuarine area, but during El Niño CPUE increased at the marine area and diminished during summer and autumn in some estuarine sites. DEP fishes had an opposite abundance pattern. During La Niña, these fishes were abundant at the coastal marine area and along some estuarine sites, but during El Niño, CPUE remained almost the same at the marine area but dropped along some estuarine sites. These different abundance patterns for dominant fish groups yielded a positive interaction between stations and climatic events. With higher river discharge and the consequent decline of dominant euryhaline fishes, such as Mugil platanus and Atherinella brasiliensis, freshwater species increased in abundance and richness in the shallow waters of the stuary. The ENSO phenomenon influences precipitation and estuarine salinity in southern Brazil and thereby seems to have a strong influence on recruitment, immigration, and emigration dynamics of fish species living within and adjacent to estuarine habitats.

    Notes: The characteristics of the mucous cells located in the gills of the fish Micropogonias furnieri were investigated. Using histochemical procedures that included methods for localization and characterization of glycoproteins (GPs), no differences were detected between the mucous cell contents of the primary and secondary lamellae. The GPs were identified with (a) oxidizable vecinal diols; (b) sialic acids and some of their chain variants, C7 or C9; (c) carboxyl groups and (d) sulphate groups. The electron microscope showed large mucous globules of different electro densities from mucous cells located deep in the epithelium between the other epithelial cells; the release of mucus by exocytosis was observed. GPs secreted on the surface of the mucous cells was suggested to be important for the lubrication, protection and inhibition of micro-organisms. It is possibility that GPs could have similar roles in Micropogonias furnieri gills.

    Notes: The histomorphological aspects as well as the histochemical content and distribution of glycoproteins (GPs) in the mucosa of the digestive tract of the anchovy Engraulis anchoita were studied. The buccopharyngeal cavity is lined by a squamous stratified epithelium with mucous superficial cells; the oesophagus shows two zones, cranial with a squamous stratified epithelium with mucous superficial cells and caudal with a columnar secretory epithelium. Finally, the stomach presents both the cranial and pyloric portion lined with a simple columnar epithelium. Tubular branched glands, formed by a single type of glandular cell, located along the stomach, are more numerous in the cranial portion. The GPs were identified with (1) oxidizable vicinal diols; (2) sialic acids and some of their chain variants, C7 or C9; (3) sialic acid residues with O-acyl substitution at C7 or C8; (4) carboxyl groups and (5) sulphate groups. Histochemical tests showed that the buccopharyngeal cavity presented the largest amount of the different types of mucosubstances. Epithelial secretory cells were found in the oesophagus, which synthesized a large quantity of sialosulphoglycoproteins likely to be related to a protective role. The surface epithelium of the stomach synthesizes and secretes acid and neutral GPs, probably related to the movement of fluids and to the absorption of easily digested substrates, respectively. Although great differences exist between different species, in E. anchoita as in other fish species, the wall of the digestive tract is composed of the four layers classically described for vertebrates. The GPs secreted by the epithelial cells are suggested to be important for the protection and inhibition of microorganisms. In additon, they are involved in enzymatic digestion of food, absorptive functions and lubrication of the alimentary tract.
