Notes: We have grown clean N-salicylideneaniline (SA) single crystals large enough for optical measurements. The photochromism of a SA single crystal is investigated at different optical polarizations. Based on theoretical calculations, the structure configurations of the SA molecules in the colored keto form are analyzed. When an ultraviolet (UV) light is irradiated on the sample at 200 K, about 40% of the keto form molecules are found to be in the cis configuration and about 60% of them in the trans configuration. The activation energies of the single crystal are obtained in different optical polarizations, and the energy-level schemes of the photochromic reactions are established. Investigation of a single crystal can provide us with new information on the photochromism of SA, because SA molecules are regularly arranged and the environment of each molecule is the same. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Barium-filled skutterudites BayCo4Sb12 with an anomalously large filling fraction of up to y=0.44 have been synthesized. The lattice parameters increase linearly with Ba content. Magnetic susceptibility data show that Ba0.44Co4Sb12 is paramagnetic, which implies that some of the Co atoms in BayCo4Sb12 have acquired a magnetic moment. The presence of the two different valence states of Co (Co3+ and Co2+) leads to the anomalously large barium filling fraction even without extra charge compensation. All samples show n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing the Ba filling fraction. The lattice thermal conductivity of BayCo4Sb12 is significantly depressed as compared to unfilled Co4Sb12. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, increases with increasing temperature reaching a maximum value of 1.1 for Ba0.24Co4Sb12 at 850 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ion distributions in a loss cone are measured in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)]. When Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) modes are excited in the central cell, enhanced end-loss of ions is observed for a characteristic energy region which agrees well with the resonant ion cyclotron condition with the AIC wave. From measurements of pitch angle distributions of end-loss ions, it is found that the loss cone is filled for this characteristic energy region, indicating an ion diffusion in a velocity space induced by the AIC wave. Magnitude of the observed additional end-loss increases with increase in the amplitude of the AIC modes. In the present experimental parameters in GAMMA 10, the AIC wave effect on the axial ion confinement is not serious. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] The magnetoelectric effect—the induction of magnetization by means of an electric field and induction of polarization by means of a magnetic field—was first presumed to exist by Pierre Curie, and subsequently attracted a great deal of interest in the 1960s and 1970s (refs ...

Notes: Xenon anaesthesia appears to have minimal haemodynamic effects. The purpose of this randomised prospective study was to compare the cardiovascular effects of xenon and nitrous oxide in patients with known ischaemic heart disease. In 20 patients who were due to undergo coronary artery bypass graft surgery, 30 min following induction of anaesthesia with fentanyl 30 µg.kg−1 and midazolam 0.1 mg.kg−1 but prior to the start of surgery, xenon or nitrous oxide 60% was administered for 15 min. The results showed that xenon caused a minimal decrease in the mean arterial pressure (from 81 (7) to 75 (8) mmHg, mean (SD)), but did not affect the systolic function of the left ventricle, as demonstrated by unchanged left ventricular stroke work index (LVSWI) and the fractional area change of the left ventricle (FAC) derived from transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE). However, in contrast, nitrous oxide was found to decrease the mean arterial pressure (from 81 (8) to 69 (7) mmHg), the LVSWI, and the FAC. The cardiac index, central venous and pulmonary artery occlusion pressures, systemic and pulmonary vascular resistances, and the TOE-derived E/A ratio through the mitral valve were unchanged by xenon or nitrous oxide. We conclude that xenon provides improved haemodynamic stability compared with nitrous oxide, conserving the left ventricular systolic function.

Notes: Background Porokeratosis is a dyskeratotic disorder of the skin characterized by cornoid lamella with parakeratosis, hyperkeratosis and loss of granular layers. The pathogenesis of porokeratosis and the mechanism(s) of its abnormal keratinization are still unknown. Objective To elucidate the mechanism(s) of abnormal keratinization that leads to the formation of cornoid lamellae in porokeratosis. Methods Apoptosis of keratinocytes was assessed in the skin of seven patients by an in situ apoptosis assay based on the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labelling (TUNEL) reaction. Patterns of loricrin and involucrin expression were examined by immunohistochemistry. Results TUNEL-positive keratinocytes were observed in the epidermis underlying the cornoid lamella in all cases examined. Furthermore, loricrin expression was interrupted there, in contrast to involucrin, which was expressed diffusely in the lesional epidermis. Conclusions These results suggest that an abnormal early keratinocyte apoptosis accompanied by dysregulation of terminal differentiation of those cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of porokeratosis.

Notes: Abstract Spontaneous hypoglycemia during fasting was frequently observed in a 53-year old man with diabetic end-stage renal failure. On fasting, despite being managed on dietary therapy, this patient developed hypoglycemia (independent of hemodialysis), at which time he was lethargic. He showed severe autonomic dysfunction for a long period. No significant transient increase in catecholamines was not observed in response to the Schellong test or during the hypoglycemic episodes. During the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), basal insulin level was not detectable, and insulin response was absent. Glucagon loading test and epinephrine loading test suggested that the glycogen store in the liver was maintained, but that glycogenolysis was impaired. Lack of catecholamine response and diminished glucagon response to hypoglycemia because of autonomic disinnervation may suppress hepatic glycogenolysis and renal gluconeogenesis, thereby resulting in fasting hypoglycemia in pathologic situations such as diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency.

Notes: Abstract The precursor Y1Ba2Cu3Ox (Y123) filaments were prepared by solution spinning through aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solution containing mixed Y, Ba and Cu acetates. The as-drawn filaments were heated to remove volatile components and to generate a superconducting phase. The filamentary superconductors were passed through Ag paste and sintered. By controlling the heating condition, the composite with excellent connection between the filaments and metallic Ag matrix was obtained. The overall transport critical current density (Je) of more than 2000 A/cm2 at 77 K and 0 T was achieved for the composite with partially melted Y123 filaments. Although the Je value decreased by applying a low magnetic field less than 0.1 T, the superconductivity of the composite maintained at 10 T at 77 K.
