Notes: While Hamiltonians written in terms of position and momentum provide a transparent picture of the motion of a system, Hamiltonians written in terms of Lie algebras are easier to handle quantum mechanically. Therefore we are interested to know how to transform one into the other. Since the exact transformation often leads to complicated expressions, we look for approximations which preserve the essential features. As basic criterion we look for the degree of equality of the classical phase space structures. We illustrate our ideas for the case of two coupled Morse systems and its approximation in terms of the Lie algebra su(2), which is relevant to anharmonic models of molecular spectroscopy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The longitudinal resistivity (ρxx) and Hall coefficient (RH) were measured for MgB2 sintered under high pressure. We found that RH is positive like cuprate high-Tc superconductors, and decreases as the temperature increases for 40 K 〈T〈300 K. The cotangent of the Hall angle was found to follow a+bT2 behavior from Tc to 300 K. At T=100 K, RH=4.1×10−11 m3/C from which the hole carrier density was determined to be 1.5×1023/cm3. This carrier density is 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than those of Nb3Sn and optimally doped YBa2Cu3Oy superconductors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the effect of sintering temperature on the superconductivity of MgB2 pellets prepared under a high pressure of 3 GPa. The superconducting properties of the nonheated MgB2 were poor. However, as the sintering temperature increased, the superconducting properties were vastly enhanced, which was demonstrated by the narrow transition width for the resistivity and the low-field magnetization. The observed surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy showed that these changes were closely related to changes in the microscopic level such as the connectivity of the grains. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to assess whether the tenth rib line (an imaginary line that joins the lowest points of the rib cage on the flanks) could be used as a marker of the lumbar vertebral level. Simple X-rays (n = 100) were taken with radiopaque markers attached on the lowest points of the rib cage and the uppermost points of the iliac crests on both flanks. The spinous process or interspinous space that the tenth rib or Tuffier's lines crossed was identified and recorded, respectively, in the neutral and fully flexed positions. With lumbar flexion, the tenth rib line (median (25th to 75th percentiles)) moved upward (L2 (L1−2 − L2) vs. L1–2 (L1–2 – L1–2); p 〈 0.01), but Tuffier's line moved downward (L4−5 (L4 − L4−5) vs. L4−5 (L4 − L5); p 〈 0.01). Because the ease of palpating the tenth rib line and its distribution patterns are comparable to those of the Tuffier's line, the tenth rib line may be useful as a new landmark of the lumbar vertebral level as well as a safeguard to prevent spinal puncture from being mistakenly performed at a dangerously high level.

Notes: Abstract The observation of muon flavor disappearance in the atmospheric neutrino flux provides compelling evidence for neutrino flavor oscillations and, by implication, for nonzero neutrino rest mass. We review recent results from Super-Kamiokande and other underground atmospheric neutrino experiments. These results, along with oscillation limits from reactor experiments, are evaluated in the context of neutrino three-state mixing. A unifying picture with numu to nutau oscillation as the dominant mode emerges; however, certain ambiguities remain. Future directions for further experimentation are discussed.

Notes: Norin-PL8 (‘PL8’) is an extremely cool-tolerant line of rice in Japan that contains genes for cool tolerance originating from a javanica landrace. It was investigated to see whether the dwarfing gene d18-k (kotaketamanishiki dwarf) exerts its pleiotropic effect on enhancing the cool tolerance at the booting stage in the genetic background of PL8. The d18-k isogenic line of the recurrent parent PL8 (D8), PL8, and two commercial cultivars ‘Hayayuki’ and ‘Kirara 397’ were used. For each line/cultivar, the 12°C-5-day treatment was conducted at various times during the booting stage. In addition to spikelet fertility, the ratio (%) of the fertilized-spikelet number of each treated panicle to the varietal mean of fertilized-spikelet number per panicle in the control (FS-T/C) was adopted to estimate cool temperature damage. For FS-T/C, the lines-cultivars ranked in the order of D8 〉 PL8 〉 ‘Hayayuki’ 〉 ‘Kirara 397’, reflecting their cool tolerances. D8 exceeded PL8 in both pollen grain number per anther in the control and as an indicator of pollen fertility after the treatment, as a result of the effects of d18-k. Consequently, d18-k can be used to develop super-highly cool-tolerant cultivars for cool-weather areas.

Notes: Monosomic addition lines in Beta vulgaris from Beta corolliflora were described morphologically and characterized for disease resistance. Monosomic addition plants (2n= 19) were selected among segregating offspring by a squash dot technique in combination with B. corolliflora-specific probes. Plants carrying an added chromosome were characterized by leaf shape, plant size and plant vigour. In this way, most addition lines could be distinguished from diploid beets, however, to identify those plants unequivocally, molecular marker analysis was also necessary. Transmission frequencies of each addition line were determined to be in the range 13.9% (Cor-4) to 60% (Cor-9). High transmission rate of addition line Cor-9 was assumed to be due to apomictic propagation because transmission rate after selfing cannot exceed 50%. Cercospora leaf spot resistance tests were performed on 167 monosomic plants from seven different addition lines, two fragment addition lines and 89 diploid controls. No line exhibited complete resistance, but the monosomic additions Cor-3 and Cor-4 showed significantly lower infection rates than their diploid sibling plants. The identification of monosomic addition lines with apomictic and disease resistance characters offers the possibility of transferring those genes to sugar beet.

Notes: Six haploid plants of radish were obtained via alien monosomic addition lines (2n = 19). One plant was derived from anther culture of an Raphanus sativus-Brassica oleracea addition line, one plant from the selected smaller seed of an R. sativus-Sinapis arvensis addition line and four plants from an R. sativus-B. rapa addition line. During metaphase I of pollen mother cells, two plants exhibited the chromosome pairing of (0-3)II+ (3-9)I, three showed (0-1)III + (0-3)II + (3-9)I and the remaining plant (0-2)II + (5-9)I. Trivalents seemed to be formed by the pairing between two larger chromosomes and the smaller one with somewhat loose pairing. All haploid plants were inferior to the radish cv. ‘Shogoin’ (2n = 18) with respect to vegetative growth. Their flowers were smaller, with sterile pollen grains, but a few normal flowers with fertile pollen sporadically developed and then produced a few seeds. It is suggested that the radish genome (R, n = 9) might comprise three pairs of homoeologous chromosomes, with the remaining three chromosomes carrying the homologous region(s) that results in a trivalent formation.

Notes: Turnip yellows virus (TuYV) is responsible for a recognizable loss of yield in European winter oilseed rape cultivation. To map genes involved in TuYV resistance, a double haploid population was established by crossing a resynthesized rapeseed line (R54) as donor for TuYV resistance with an elite rapeseed line (‘Express’). Resistance was determined with 10 plants per line by double antibody sandwich-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. After screening 17 primer combinations (Pstl/Msel and EcoRI/Msel), 143 amplified fragment length polymorphism markers were mapped to 20 linkage groups representing 15 chromosomes of the rapeseed genome. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were mapped using the composite interval mapping approach. As a result, one major quantitative trait locus was found on linkage group MS17, explaining up to 50% of the phenotypic variation. Because no other factors displaying a significant effect on the expression of resistance could be identified, a simple mode of inheritance for TuYV resistance is suggested, thus enabling marker-assisted selection during rapeseed breeding.

Notes: Abstract  For a simple, rapid and PCR-based screening of sex in the cultivated asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.), we developed five STS markers from previously mapped, low-copy, sex-linked AFLP markers. A male/female PCR assay was feasible with these STS markers either by direct amplification or by digestion with restriction enzymes. Similar to the AFLP markers from which they were derived, STS4150.1, STS4150.2, STS4150.3 and STS3156 did not give recombinants in five different populations. STS3660 could be scored codominantly, enabling the differentiation of XY from YY males in the screened F2 mapping population. The use of the sex-linked STS markers should allow early identification of sex, thus accelerating the breeding process for new asparagus varieties. Further, 10 additional AFLP markers obtained with PstI/MseI primer combinations have been mapped on the L5 chromosome, bringing the total number of known AFLP and STS markers flanking the sex locus to 24. These markers can be utilized for fine mapping of the sex gene in asparagus, which will pave the way for a map-based cloning approach.
