Notes: The longitudinal resistivity (ρxx) and Hall coefficient (RH) were measured for MgB2 sintered under high pressure. We found that RH is positive like cuprate high-Tc superconductors, and decreases as the temperature increases for 40 K 〈T〈300 K. The cotangent of the Hall angle was found to follow a+bT2 behavior from Tc to 300 K. At T=100 K, RH=4.1×10−11 m3/C from which the hole carrier density was determined to be 1.5×1023/cm3. This carrier density is 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than those of Nb3Sn and optimally doped YBa2Cu3Oy superconductors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An NAD+-dependent succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase from bovine brain was inactivated by pyridoxal-5′- phosphate. Spectral evidence is presented to indicate that the inactivation proceeds through formation of a Schiff's base with amino groups of the enzyme. After NaBH4 reduction of the pyridoxal-5′-phosphate inactivated enzyme, it was observed that 3.8 mol phosphopyridoxyl residues were incorporated/enzyme tetramer. The coenzyme, NAD+, protected the enzyme against inactivation by pyridoxal-5′-phosphate. The absorption spectrum of the reduced and dialyzed pyridoxal-5′-phosphate-inactivated enzyme showed a characteristic peak at 325 nm, which was absent in the spectrum of the native enzyme. The fluorescence spectrum of the pyridoxyl enzyme differs completely from that of the native enzyme. After tryptic digestion of the enzyme modified with pyridoxal-5′-phosphate followed by [3H]NaBH4 reduction, a radioactive peptide absorbing at 210 nm was isolated by reverse-phase HPLC. The sequences of the peptide containing the phosphopyridoxyllysine were clearly identical to sequences of other mammalian succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase brain species including human. It is suggested that the catalytic function of succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase is modulated by binding of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate to specific Lys347 residue at or near the coenzyme-binding site of the protein.

Notes: Extensive abnormal grain growth occurs locally at the interface of centrifugally cast bilayers of MgO-doped (1000 ppm) Al2O3 (99.8% purity) during sintering. Results of systematic experiments indicate that the abnormal grain growth is attributable to particle aggregates segregated at the interface during centrifugal casting. Apparently, the particle aggregates contain a higher concentration of impurities than do the fine primary particles, causing local abnormal grain growth at the interface.

Notes: The effects of oil droplet size and agar concentration on gel strength and microstructure of emulsion gels were investigated by compression test and cryoscanning electron microscope (Cryo-SEM). At all agar concentrations, the compressive stress values of emulsion gels were lower than those of the oil-free gels. Compressive stress and energy were significantly affected by oil droplet size and agar concentration, but compressive strain was not. SEM observation revealed that the overall volume of void spaces decreased and strand compactness increased with increasing agar concentration. Gels containing oil droplets had some void spaces between the gel network and the oil droplets. The strands of emulsion gels did not cover the oil globules completely, a phenomenon which was also observed for the gel with high agar concentration.

Notes: Abstract The influences of stabilizers on β- and β′′-Al2O3 phase formations in Li2O(MgO)-Na2O-Al2O3 systems were investigated. When stabilized with 4MgCO3ċMg(OH)2ċ5H2O, most of the β′′-Al2O3 phase formed below 1200°C and further β- to β′′-Al2O3 transformation with an increase of temperature was not observed. On the other hand, when stabilized with Li2CO3,β′′-Al2O3 formation occurred by two steps. First, β′′-Al2O3 was partly formed below 1200°C, and, second, noticeable transformation from β-Al2O3 to β′′-Al2O3 occurred at higher temperature ranges. It was shown that transient eutectic liquid in the Li2O-Na2O-Al2O3 system promoted the β- to β′′-Al2O3 transformation at higher temperatures. Uniform distribution of both Mg2+ and Li+ stabilizing ions enhanced β′′-Al2O3 formation at low temperatures. In the Li-stabilized systems, however, homogeneous distribution of Li+ ions hindered both the formation of transient eutectic liquid and the second β- to β′′-Al2O3 phase transformation at high temperatures.

Notes: Abstract A new forming method, pressureless powder packing (PLPP), was studied to fabricate the β- and β′′-Al2O3 tubes. Alkali sources were infiltrated into the pores of α-Al2O3 tube preforms that had been prepared by the PLPP forming method. The composition for the synthesis of β′′-Al2O3 phase was Na2O · 0. 138Li2 · 4.4Al2O3. The β′′-Al2O3 fraction of calcined and sintered bodies was increased with the increase of calcination temperature, and phase formation was largely affected by the type of starting α-Al2O3. Large particle size and narrow size distribution of fused α-Al2O3 resulted in uniform green microstructure that enhanced the homogeneity of alkali salts after infiltration, which was very important for the β′-Al2O3 formation. Sintered microstructure was uniform in all specimens but further development was required for density improvement.
