    Notes: Experimental evidence for the controlled onset of fluctuations by varying the magnetic well in the plasma edge region of the TJ-II stellarator (major radius R=1.5 m, minor radius a〈0.22 m, magnetic field B=1 T) has been obtained. The level of fluctuation, the degree of intermittency and the radial correlation of relevant quantities increase as the magnetic well is reduced. TJ-II possesses a high degree of flexibility, making it an ideal device for investigating the characteristics of transport close to instability thresholds. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rhizopycnis vagum is a recently described coelomycetous fungus that contributes to vine decline of muskmelons in Honduras, Guatemala, Texas and California. This fungus has been associated with roots of muskmelon plants affected by vine decline in most Spanish muskmelon production areas. Isolates were collected from 1996 to 2000 and identified from their cultural and morphological characteristics and by sequencing the ITS region of the ribosomal coding nuclear DNA (rDNA) and phylogenetic analysis. A few isolates from muskmelon with growth characteristics similar to R. vagum were identified as Phoma terrestris. Watermelon, Cucurbita hybrids used as rootstocks for watermelon production, Amaranthus sp. and grapevine were also hosts for R. vagum. Based on disease reaction in muskmelon roots, the pathogenicity of 10 isolates of R. vagum from different hosts and geographical origins was verified. The fungus caused root discoloration, corky lesions, and eventually the presence of pink coloration on the roots. Rhizopycnis vagum appears to be a minor pathogen that contributes to muskmelon vine decline complex in Spain through infection of roots.

    Notes: Abstract  The vertical distribution of native earthworm species from natural and disturbed savannas in the Oxisols of the Colombian Llanos was assessed in a native savanna and in a 17-year-old grazed grass-legume pasture during a period of 17 months. Different patterns of vertical stratification were observed for all species with a strong migration of populations to deeper layers in the dry season. The correlation between the size of the earthworms and the average depth at which they were found was not significant (P〉0.05), despite the fact that bigger species are located deeper in the soil. The living habits and adaptive strategies of the smallest species, Ocnerodrilidae n. sp., found in both ecosystems studied are responsible for this pattern. This endogeic species is associated with organic pools generated by an anecic species and further studies should assess the role of this species in ecosystem functioning. Mature worms of one anecic species were located deeper than immature ones in the soil (P〈0.01). Soil moisture had an important effect on the vertical distribution of earthworms, although differences between immature and mature worms of the anecic Martiodrilus carimaguensis are likely to be of biotic origin. New data on the biology and ecology of these Neotropical species are shown.

    Notes: Abstract. Computed tomography studies are usually used to assess patients with pleural effusions, and radiologists should be aware of the significance of different CT findings for the diagnosis of the effusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate CT findings for etiological diagnosis of pleural effusions. Contrast-enhanced CT of the chest of 211 patients with pleural effusion of definite diagnosis were evaluated. The CT images were evaluated for the presence and extent of pleural effusion, thickening or nodules, extrapleural fat and other changes in the mediastinum or lung. The CT scans were read by two independent observers and correlation between them was evaluated. Comparison of CT findings between benign and malignant effusions, between exudates and transudates, and between empyemas and the other parapneumonic effusions were carried out. Kappa values for most CT findings were 〉 0.85. Loculation, pleural thickening, pleural nodules, and extrapleural fat of increased density were only present in exudative effusions. Multiple pleural nodules and nodular pleural thickening were the only pleural findings limited to malignant pleural effusions. The signs were also more frequently seen in empyemas than in other parapneumonic effusions. Computed tomography findings can help to distinguish between transudates and exudates. Although there is some overlap between benign and malignant pleural effusions, pleural nodules and nodular pleural thickening were present almost exclusively in the latter. Although differences between CT findings of empyemas and the other parapneumonic effusions exist, there is no finding which can definitely differentiate between them.

    Notes: Abstract It has been shown that transport barriers in toroidal magnetically confined plasmas tend to be linked to regions of unique magnetic topology such as the location of a minimum in the safety factor, rational surfaces or the boundary between closed and open flux surfaces. In the absence of E × B sheared flows, fluctuations are expected to show maximum amplitude near rational surfaces, and plasma confinement might tend to deteriorate. On the other hand, if the generation of E × B sheared flows were linked to low order rational surfaces, these would be beneficial for confinement. Experimental evidence of E × B sheared flows linked to rational surfaces has been obtained in the plasma edge region of the TJ-II stellarator.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of microstructure of the two-phase alloyTi–46Al–1Cr–0.2Si on the oxidation behavior in air between600 and 900°C was studied. The oxidation rate, type of scale, and scalespallation resistance were strongly affected by the type of microstructure,i.e., lamellar in as-cast material and duplex after extrusion at1300°C. The oxidation rate was affected by the size and distribution ofthe α2-Ti3Al phase, being faster for the extrudedmaterial with coarse α2-Ti3Al. The type of oxide scaledetermines the spalling resistance. Cast material developed a uniform scalethat spalled off after short exposure times at 800 and 900°C when a criticalthickness was reached. The extruded material presented a heterogeneous scalewith predominant thick regions formed on γ-TiAl-α2-Ti3Algrains and thin scale regions formed on γ-TiAl grains. Thistype of scale could permit an easier relaxation in the matrix of stressesgenerated by both thermal-expansion mismatch between scale and alloy andoxide growth, resulting in a higher spallation resistance.

    Notes: Abstract A duplex stainless steel was investigated in both as-received sheet and after annealing at temperatures ranging from 850 to 1100°C. The sheet presents a deformation texture in both phases, austenite and ferrite, induced by cold rolling. Microstructure in the as-received material consists of island-like austenitic grains in a ferrite matrix. These austenitic grains are elongated with an average size of 6, 20 and 40 μm along the normal (ND), transversal (TD) and rolling direction (RD). Quantitative texture measurements demonstrated that texture components are distributed mainly along the θ-fiber (ND ∥ ‹100›) and α-fiber (RD ∥ ‹110›) for the ferrite and the ζ-fiber (ND ∥ ‹110›) for the austenite. After recrystallization, a decrease in the intensity of the mean fibers and an increase in the minor components was observed in both, ferrite and austenite. Therefore, a similar texture was reached in both phases after annealing at 1050°C. Microstructural characterization after annealing at temperatures above 850°C showed that the elongated austenitic grains transform in colonies of equiaxic grains of about 10–15 μm in size. These colonies are surrounded by a ferritic matrix at annealing temperatures above 1000°C or by a laminar microstructure at temperatures below 950°C. This laminar microstructure includes sigma phase and austenite formed from delta ferrite, and untransformed delta ferrite.
