Notizen: We investigate the electrical transport properties of narrow titanium (Ti) wires which are anodically oxidized through a resist mask. At temperatures below 1.2 K the current–voltage characteristics of the resulting Ti/TiOx nanostructures exhibit a zero-current state, characteristic of the Coulomb blockade. The blockade region can be modulated by a capacitively coupled gate electrode. The observed experimental features can be explained in terms of a single electron tunneling model of a multi-island device. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have studied the optical and structural properties of single, self-assembled InP quantum dots (QDs) overgrown with nominally 5 nm of GaInP, using an ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating at low temperatures. The STM is combined with an optical detection system, which allows us to detect the emission from individual quantum dots with high spatial resolution. We find that the InP QDs act as nucleation points for the GaInP overgrowth, where the strain induced by the overlayer give rise to a QD emission around 1.46 eV. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A site-control technique for individual InAs quantum dots (QDs), formed by self-assembling has been developed, using scanning-electron-microscope assisted nanodeposition and metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. We find that the nanoscale deposits, created at the focal point of the electron beam on a semiconductor surface, act as "nanogrowth masks". Growth of a thin epitaxial layer produces nanoholes extending down to the deposits. The carbon deposits can be removed by oxygen plasma etching. When a compressively strained layer is deposited on this surface, QDs are self-organized at the hole sites, while no dots are observed in the flat surface region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract. Proinsulin C-peptide ameliorates renal and autonomic nerve function and increases skeletal muscle blood flow, oxygen uptake and glucose transport in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. These effects have in part been ascribed to the stimulatory influence of C-peptide on Na+,K+-ATPase and endothelial nitric oxide synthase. To evaluate the capacity of C-peptide to insert into lipid bilayers and form ion channels, C-peptide secondary structure and membrane interactions were studied with circular dichroism spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. C-peptide is shown to lack a stable secondary structure, both when part of proinsulin and when free in aqueous solution, although the N-terminal third of the peptide exhibits an α-helical conformation in trifluoroethanol. Moreover, C-peptide remains disordered in the aqueous solvent in the presence of lipid vesicles, regardless of vesicle composition. In conclusion, C-peptide is unlikely to elicit physiological effects through stable conformation-dependent interactions with lipid membranes.
