    Notes: Abstract. We consider the following partition problem: Given a set S of n elements that is organized as k sorted subsets of size n/k each and given a parameter h with 1/k ≤ h ≤ n/k , partition S into g = O(n/(hk)) subsets D 1 , D 2 , . . . , D g of size Θ(hk) each, such that, for any two indices i and j with 1 ≤ i 〈 j ≤ g , no element in D i is bigger than any element in D j . Note that with various combinations of the values of parameters h and k , several fundamental problems, such as merging, sorting, and finding an approximate median, can be formulated as or be reduced to this partition problem. The partition problem also finds many applications in solving problems of parallel computing and computational geometry. In this paper we present efficient parallel algorithms for solving the partition problem and a number of its applications. Our parallel partition algorithm runs in O( log n) time using $$ O\left(\frac{\min\{(n/h)*\max\{\log h,1\}, n*\max\{\log(1/h),1\}\}}{\log n}\right) $$ processors in the EREW PRAM model. The complexity bounds of our parallel partition algorithm on the respective special cases match those of the optimal EREW PRAM algorithms for merging, sorting, and finding an approximate median. Using our parallel partition algorithm, we are also able to obtain better complexity bounds (even possibly on a weaker parallel model) than the previously best known parallel algorithms for several important problems, including parallel multiselection, parallel multiranking, and parallel sorting of k sorted subsets.

    Notes: SiGe microcavities with Ge dots were fabricated by employing strain-balanced SiGe/Si Bragg reflectors, and it was observed that photoluminescence from Ge dots embedded in the microcavity structure was significantly modulated due to the cavity effect. The characteristic luminescence of the microcavity was observed up to 200 K, and the thermal activation energy of the luminescence was largely improved compared with that of cavities with quantum wells. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aims:  Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is a distinctive variant of fibrosarcoma and has been reported to have metastatic potential despite its low-grade histological findings. Low-grade myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is an important differential diagnosis of LGMFS, because it shows different biological behaviour. Of 75 MFSs in the extremities and trunk, we defined 22 grade 1 tumours as low-grade MFS according to the French Federation of Cancer Centres grading system and compared the clinicopathological factors and immunohistochemical expression of cell cycle regulators with those of 11 LGFMSs.Methods and results:  The two entities could be distinguished on histological grounds. Low-grade MFS was characterized by the presence of prominent elongated, curvilinear capillaries and pseudolipoblasts, accompanied by an abundant myxoid matrix. It had no extensive solid areas. LGFMS was composed of bland spindle cells arranged in a whorled pattern with alternating myxoid and fibrous stroma. Curvilinear capillaries were not prominent and cytological atypia was absent. No tumour necrosis was observed in any of the 11 LGFMSs, whereas only one case showed tumour necrosis in less than 50% of the tumour in 22 low-grade MFSs. The patients with low-grade MFS were significantly older than those with LGFMS (low-grade MFS average, 60.1 years; LGFMS average, 31.5 years; P 〈 0.0001) and low-grade MFS occurred more frequently in a superficial location (low-grade MFS 14/20; LGFMS 2/11; P = 0.0077). As for cell cycle regulator expression, the MIB-1 labelling index (LI) (14.76 on average) and cyclin E LI (11.55 on average) in low-grade MFS were significantly higher than those (MIB-1 LI, 4.68 on average; cyclin E LI, 3.38 on average) of LGFMS, while p21 LI (25.53 on average) and p27 LI (42.68 on average) in low-grade MFS were significantly lower than those (p21 LI, 42.74 on average; p27 LI, 57.28 on average) of LGFMS.Conclusions:  We conclude that low-grade MFS and LGFMS are distinctly different clinicopathological entities and the assessment of the immunohistochemical expression of MIB-1, cyclin E, p21 and p27 as well as conventional clinicopathological features may be helpful to distinguish low-grade MFS from LGFMS.

    Notes: Several evaluation methods for soybean chilling tolerance at the reproductive stage were examined under artificial climatic conditions. Comparisons were made on plants in control and treated plots using three cultivars differing in the level of chilling tolerance. In all methods, plants were grown at 22/17°C (day/night) until first flowering, and then transferred to growth chambers at 24/17°C for control and 15/15°C for chilling treatment, respectively. A method, in which plants were grown at 20/16°C after 4 weeks of the different temperature treatments, proved comparable to the conventional one, in which chilling tolerance at the flowering stage is evaluated using natural and artificial conditions. Another method, in which the plants in chilling treatment plots were grown at 15°C until maturity, also proved usable to evaluate genotypic differences in chilling tolerance independently of maturity time.

    Notes: Epitaxial multilayers of Fe3O4/Co3O4 were successfully grown on MgO and SrTiO3(001) single crystal substrates using a molecular beam epitaxy apparatus. The multilayers showed a strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy and an increase of coercive field for thin Fe3O4 samples. Multilayered Co3O4 exhibited a significant lattice expansion along the growth direction in order to compensate lattice mismatch at the interface. A small lattice distortion in the Fe3O4 layers might be the origin of the strong anisotropy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Strain-balanced Si0.73Ge0.27/Si distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) which were designed to overcome the limitation of the number of pairs originating from the strain accumulation were fabricated. Raman spectra of Si0.73Ge0.27/Si DBRs with 11 and 25 mirror pairs showed that SiGe and Si layers were under compressive and tensile strain on SiGe virtual substrates as designed. A record reflectivity of 80% was achieved at 1.44 μm in SiGe/Si DBRs with 25 pairs. The surface roughness of the 25 pair sample, however, was increased to about 46 nm compared with 6.3 nm of the 11 pair sample. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Strain-balanced Si/SiGe multiple quantum wells (MQWs), which are designed to overcome the limitation of the number of wells coming from the strain accumulation, were fabricated, and their optical properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction spectra and cross-sectional transmission-electron-microscope images showed a high-crystalline quality of samples and excellent uniformity of the well width. Well-resolved no-phonon and TO-phonon-assisted transitions from strain-balanced MQWs were observed by low-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy, and both their temperature and excitation power dependence showed blueshifts due to the delocalization of excitons, the band bending, and/or the band-filling effect. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
