Notes: The improvement of luminosity and luminous efficiency is the one of the most important tasks in alternating current plasma display panels. The influence of gas mixture ratio, Ne–Xe and He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), on luminosity and luminous efficiency in surface discharge alternating-current plasma display panels has been investigated. It is found that discharge power does not strongly depend on the gas mixtures, while the luminosity for three species mixture gas, He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), is shown to be much higher than those for the two species mixture gas of Ne–Xe. The three species mixture gas, He–Ne(27%)–Xe(3%), can be suggested as the one of the candidates for achieving high luminosity and luminous efficiency for color plasma display panels, based on the experimental observations of luminosity, discharge power, response time, and efficiency. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report three children with clinical features of pityriasis lichenoides (scaly red to brown papules and macules) in whom there were histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (disproportionate epidermotropism, Pautrier’s microabscesses, and wiry and coarse collagen bundles). Immunohistochemical staining revealed a prevalence of T lymphocytes in the infiltrate. T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 serology was negative in the two patients in whom this test was performed. Thus, lesions resembling pityriasis lichenoides can be an unusual and potentially misleading presentation of mycosis fungoides.

Notes: This paper studies the effects of load sequence and interaction, and overloading effect on the fatigue damage of bridges on the basis of a non-linear fatigue damage model. The model is derived from the theory of continuum damage mechanics for high-cycle fatigue. Fatigue behaviour at two levels of constant stress range is first discussed in detail. The formulation for the effective fatigue strength of the predamaged members is then derived, and the results predicted by the model are compared with the experimental data for two stress level tests and other results obtained from linear and double linear fatigue damage models. The variation of cycle ratio and fatigue life due to overloading is secondly investigated; the equations for evaluating the effect of overloading on fatigue damage accumulation on bridges at normal traffic loading are then derived. It has been demonstrated that the developed model can well describe the effect of load sequence and interaction and has also been verified by comparing the predicted results obtained by the model with the experimental data based on two levels of stress tests. The effect of accidental overloading on the fatigue damage of existing bridges can also be evaluated using the model. The model is applied to evaluate the fatigue damage and service life of the Tsing Ma Bridge, an essential portion of the transport network for the Hong Kong airport, under normal traffic loading and possible accidental overloading.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen patients with congenital muscular torticollis, aged 6–22 (average 11) years, underwent surgical releases of the contractive bands. There were 8 boys and 10 girls. Preoperative open mouth radiograph of the odontoid process in 16 patients showed asymmetry of articular facets of the axis and tilt of the odontoid process to the side of the torticollis. Sixteen patients received bipolar releases, the others received distal releases. After the operation, a neck collar was applied and an exercise program was started. At an average follow-up of 5 years and 7 months, there were excellent or good results in 10 patients. All of the patients except 2 showed improvement of the facial asymmetry and all except 1 had a satisfactory range of motion of the neck. One patient underwent a second operation due to recurrence. The follow-up radiographs showed improvement of the tilt of the odontoid process, but the asymmetry of the articular facets of the axis persisted. We suggest that bipolar release is the treatment of choice for congenital muscular torticollis in patients of more than 6 years of age. To determine the influence of a bipolar release on the functions of the cervical spine, longer follow-up intervals are needed.

Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted in a clayey soil to determine the effects of cultural practices on methane (CH4) emissions from rice fields. The factors evaluated were a) direct seeding on dry vs wet soil, b) age of transplanted seedlings (8 d old and 30 d old), and c) fall vs spring plowing. Methane emissions were measured weekly throughout the rice-growing season using a closed static chamber technique. Transplanted 8-d-old seedlings showed the highest emission of 42.4 g CH4 m−2 season−1, followed by transplanted 30-d-seedlings (40.3 g CH4 m−2 season−1), and direct seeding on wet soil (37.1 g CH4 m−2 season−1). Direct seeding on dry soil registered the least emission of 26.9 g CH4 m−2 season−1. Thus transplanting 30-d-old seedlings, direct seeding on wet soil, and direct seeding on dry soil reduced CH4 emission by 5%, 13%, and 37%, respectively, when compared with transplanting 8-d-old seedlings. Methane emission under spring plowing was 42.0 g CH4 m−2 season−1 and that under fall plowing was 31.3 g CH4 m−2 seasons−1. The 26% lower emission in the field plowed in spring was caused by degradation of organic matter over the winter.
