Notes: High oxygen pressure annealed PrBa2Cu3O7−y (y∼0) cuprates were prepared in order to study the effect of oxygen stoichiometric parameter y on the unusual Pr/Cu magnetic properties and/or recently reported superconductivity. The oxygen-rich orthorhombic 123-chain phase is highly unstable under high-oxygen pressure synthesis and decomposes completely in 10 bar pressure. For a smaller 2 bar prepared sample a relatively clean phase was preserved with an oxygen parameter y=0.05, as compared with y=0.11 from a conventional 1 bar flowing oxygen method. No superconductivity can be detected for all high-oxygen pressure prepared samples. Instead, Mott-insulator behavior with anomalous high Pr ordering TN(Pr)=19 K was observed for PrBa2Cu3O6.95. Comparison with other Pr/Ba intersubstituted Pr1−xBa2−xCu3O7−y cuprates is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  We used a combination of 4 monoclonal antibodies (BM7, BM8 against MUC1, 5D3 aganist CK8,18,19 and HEA125 against human epithelial antigen) and a sensitive immunocytochemical staining using cytospin preparation to identify breast tumor cells in leukapheresis products (LP). This assay allowed detection of one tumor cell in 1×106 mononuclear cells (MC). In clinical specimens, tumor cells were detected in LP from 6 of 42 (14.3%) patients in the adjuvant treatment group, from 2 of 11 (18.2%) patients in the neoadjuvant treatment group and from 9 of 43 (20.1%) in the group of patients with metastatic disease. Tumor cell counts ranged from 0.25–5 cells in 1×106 normal cells per LP. The median tumor cell concentration was higher in specimens from patients with metastatic disease (median=0.96) than in specimens from patients in the adjuvant and neoadjuvant treament groups (median=0.5 and 0.75). No significant differences between the epithelial cell positive group and the epithelial cell negative group with respect to tumor size, lymph nodes involvement, tumor grade, histological type and receptor were found. We conclude that immunocytochemical staining of cytospin preparation is a sensitive and simple method to detect and quantitate breast cancer cells in LP.

Notes: Dipolar effects in solution nuclear magnetic resonance lead to additional peaks in two-dimensional experiments. These peaks, which have the experimental properties of intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences, have been used in a variety of applications. Most efforts have focused on intermolecular zero-quantum or double-quantum coherences, which originate in two-spin terms from the equilibrium density matrix. In this paper, we characterize the "third-order experiments" (Hahn echo decay and triple-quantum CRAZED, which both originate in the three-spin terms in the equilibrium density matrix) both theoretically and experimentally. For example, in the coupled-spin picture, Hahn echo decays in concentrated solutions arise initially from intermolecular, 3-spin, −1-quantum coherences, which are partially converted to 3-spin, +1-quantum coherences by the second pulse, and hence survive the 1:1 coherence transfer echo. Such terms require two dipolar couplings to become observable. We discuss the general properties of both of these sequences, and show that they only give information that is already present in the "second-order" double-quantum and zero-quantum experiments. Finally, we also show that relaxation and diffusion can be introduced into the coupled-spin picture in a straightforward manner. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The validity of the Monte Carlo simulation for studying the dynamics of a Rouse chain with a finite number of beads, N, is established by showing the close agreement between the simulation results and the analytical solutions for the time-correlation function of the end-to-end vector. Then, the Monte Carlo simulation is used to calculate the dynamic functions associated with the bond vector b(t) or direction u(t)=b(t)/|b(t)| of an elastic dumbbell and a Rouse segment in a chain. The effect of chain connectivity on the motions of a single Rouse segment is studied. In particular, it is shown that the dynamic function 〈P2[u(0)⋅u(t)]〉2 over a wide dynamic range, which is the main region probed by the depolarized photon-correlation spectroscopy, is basically independent of the values of N≥8 in agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the line shape of the depolarized photon-correlation functions of the concentrated solutions ((approximate)60 wt. %) of polystyrene in cyclohexane at the theta point can be fully accounted for by including the effect of chain connectivity regardless of the crudeness of the Rouse segment relative to the chemical structure. From this study, the molecular weight for a Rouse segment of polystyrene in the concentrated solutions is estimated to be 1100, which is slightly larger than the values m=780–900 obtained for polystyrene in the melt state by other methods. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method of micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) was developed for simultaneous determination of 14 synthetic colors in soft drinks and confectioneries. The optimal solvent of MEKC method for separating all colors was a mixed solution comprised of 18% acetonitrile and 82% 0.05 M sodium deoxycholate in borate-phosphate buffer (pH 7.8). These colors were well separated within 20 min using 57 cm × 75 micrometer uncoated fused-silica capillary column, operating at 25 kV and detected by UV at 214 nm. The average recovery of all colors spiked into soft drinks and confectionery was better than 82%. The addition of illegal colors was not found after testing 30 samples. In retail foods, the colorant found in highest concentration was tartrazine (155 μLgg/g sample).

Notes: Postmortem changes in duck breast muscle as affected by red wine marination at 5 °C were studied. Myofibrils were purified from the control (CON) and the red wine marinated muscle (RW) after 0, 1, 3, 7, and 14 d storage. The results showed that myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) was significantly (p 〈 0.05) higher in RW than in CON samples. Myosin heavy chain, α-actinin, troponin-T, titin, and nebulin were degraded more rapidly as seen on SDS-PAGE in RW than in CON samples. Our results suggested that red wine marination can cause postmortem changes in mule duck breast muscle.

Notes: An efficient and morphologically stable pyrimidine-containing spirobifluorene-cored oligoaryl, 2,7-bis[2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)pyrimidine-5-yl]-9,9′-spirobifluorene (TBPSF), as an emitter or a host for blue organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), is reported. The steric hindrance inherent with the molecular structure renders the material a record-high neat-film photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 80% as a pure blue emitter (PL peak at 430 nm) of low molecular weight, and a very high glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 195 °C. Blue OLEDs employing this compound as the emitter or the emitting host exhibit unusual endurance for high currents over 5000 mA/cm2. When TBPSF is used as a host for perylene in a blue OLED, maximal brightness of ∼80 000 cd/m2 had been achieved, representing the highest values reported for blue OLEDs under dc driving. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High dielectric CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) thin films were epitaxially grown on (001) LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Microstructural studies by x-ray diffraction, pole figure measurements, and transmission electron microscopy show that the as-grown films are good single crystalline quality with an interface relationship of (001)CCTO//(001)LAO and [100]CCTO//[100]LAO. Dielectric property measurements show that the films have an extremely high dielectric constant with value of 10 000 at 1 MHz at room temperature. It is interesting to note that the twinned substrate results in the formation of twinning or dislocations inside the CCTO film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
