    Notes: Deaf children of elementary and secondary school age participated in a study designed to examine their understanding of display rules, the principles governing the expression and concealment of emotion in social situations. The results showed that deaf children's knowledge of display rules, as measured by their reported concealment of emotion, was comparable to that of hearing children of the same age. However, deaf children were less likely to report that they would conceal happiness and anger. They were also less likely to produce reasons for concealing emotion and a smaller proportion of their reasons were prosocial, that is, relating to the feelings of others. The results suggest that the understanding of display rules (which function to protect the feelings of other people) may develop more gradually in deaf children raised in a spoken language environment than it does in hearing children.

    Notes: Submental tracheal intubation is a simple, quick and effective alternative to oral and nasal tracheal intubation or tracheostomy in the surgical management of selected patients with craniomaxillofacial injuries. It has a low morbidity and it does not impede the surgical field, allowing for temporary maxillo-mandibular fixation (jaw wiring) intra-operatively, and nasal assessment, manipulation and bone grafting, either simultaneously or as an independent procedure. We report 12 cases utilizing this technique in this retrospective study, this includes 11 patients with mid-facial fractures and associated base of skull fractures, and one patient who underwent an elective Le Fort III advancement. The techniques and indications for submental tracheal intubation are described.

    Notes: Plots of spring wheat cv. Baldus were inoculated at GS 13 with four Mycosphaerella graminicola isolates, two relatively susceptible and two relatively resistant to DMI fungicides. Changes in the ratio of relatively susceptible to resistant types following fungicide or water sprays were measured. Three fungicides were compared: flutriafol, which is very mobile within leaves, fluquinconazole, which is less so, and prochloraz, which is almost immobile. All are inhibitors of sterol demethylation. In 1996, fungicide-treated plots were sprayed once with half the recommended dose at GS 39–47. In 1997, three doses were used: one-quarter and one-eighth of the recommended dose and a dual application of two one-eighth recommended doses, a week apart. Isolates were classified using a discriminating dose assay and the ratio of relatively susceptible to relatively resistant isolates in each field plot before and after fungicide application calculated. In both years, the numbers of relatively susceptible and relatively resistant isolates were equal just before fungicide application. All fungicides caused significant selection towards resistance, but the strength of selection varied with fungicide, dose and position in the crop canopy. Fluquinconazole selected most strongly and gave the best control of disease. Interactions between fungicide and dose were not significant. Selection was equally strong all along leaves sprayed with prochloraz, but increased smoothly from base to tip of leaves sprayed with fluquinconazole or flutriafol. Averaged over fungicides, reducing the dose of a single fungicide application from one-quarter to one-eighth slightly reduced selection towards resistance on both leaf layers. The dual one-eighth dose caused twice the change of the single one-eighth dose on the flag leaf, but was similar to a single spray on leaf 2.

    Notes: We study the effect of strain on the properties of a one-dimensional acoustic grating: a tapered optical fiber with a periodically varying diameter. Its spectral response has a strong frequency stop band for flexural waves. Changing the tension of the fiber changes the wave velocity, and so modifies the acoustic response of the grating. The resulting tunability of the stop band over a wide frequency range is demonstrated experimentally. Furthermore, the stop band can almost disappear completely due to a strain-induced phase-matching phenomenon. Such structures are suitable as frequency-selective acoustic mirrors in acousto-optic fiber devices. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present numerical designs for single-mode leak-free photonic crystal waveguides exhibiting strongly anisotropic spatial and temporal dispersion. The structure consisted of a number of concatenated and equally spaced microtapers, fabricated using a focused CO2 laser. Acoustic characterization of the device showed a strong frequency stop-band for flexural waves.     Notes: To fully characterize photonic crystal guided wave optical devices, one needs to measure the spatial variation of both the phase and amplitude of the electromagnetic field. In this work, we simultaneously measure the intensity and phase in the near field of both propagating and evanescent fields by incorporating a scanning near-field optical microscope into one arm of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. We demonstrate the technique by imaging the phase fronts of an evanescent wave formed by total internal reflection and by measuring the phase variation in the LP11 mode in an overmoded optical fiber. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Minority-carrier diffusion lengths of electrons and holes were measured in a GaN-based light-emitting diode using the electron-beam-induced current technique in the line-scan configuration. A theoretical model with an extended generation source and a nonzero surface recombination velocity was used to accurately extract the diffusion length of the p- and n-type layers. A minority-carrier diffusion length of Ln=(80±6) nm for electrons in the p-type GaN layer, Lp=(70±4) nm for holes in the n-type GaN:Si,Zn active layer, and Ln=(55±4) nm for electrons in the p-type Al0.1Ga0.9N layer were determined. The results from this model are compared with two simpler and widely used theoretical models. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
