Notes: Abstract SOD-1-deficient mice demonstrate no loss of motoneurons but are still vulnerable to axotomy and ischemic insults. To investigate possible reasons for vulnerability of motoneuron populations, we studied changes in ultrastructural calcium distribution during maturation in spinal- and oculomotor neurons in SOD-1–/– mice. Between 3 and 11 months the cytoplasmic component of the intracellular calcium changed at a lower rate in spinal motoneurons and motor axon terminals in the interosseus muscle of SOD-1–/– animals compared to wild-type controls. No such dissimilarities were noted in the oculomotor system, or in mitochondrial calcium contents of either cell type. These data suggest that the lack of SOD-1 may be associated with vulnerability to insult by depletion of non-mitochondrial calcium stores selectively in motoneurons lacking parvalbumin and/or calbindin D28K.

Notes: The low-temperature cation-ordered superstructure of anhydrous sodium sodalite, a zeolite with composition Na6[AlSiO4]6, has been determined through the use of both density functional theory (DFT) and classical force-field lattice energy minimizations. The charge-balancing Na+ cations are assumed to occupy their characteristic locations within the cubic alumino–silicate framework near the centers of the 6-ring windows. Within the constraints of the volume-doubled pseudotetragonal supercell reported in a previous x-ray diffraction study [B. Campbell, S. R. Shannon, H. Metiu, and N. P. Blake (submitted)], all possible arrangements of cations and vacancies amongst the 6-ring window sites were considered. Force-field calculations employing the ab initio based potential energy function derived by Blake, Weakliem, and Metiu [J. Phys. Chem. B 102, 67 (1998)] and the empirical shell-model potential of Catlow et al. [J. Chem. Soc. Commun. 1984, 1271; Mol. Simul. 1, 207 (1988)], were used to perform full lattice-energy minimizations of each configuration, and to assess their relative stabilities both before and after minimization. The most stable configurations were then examined in more detail via ab initio density functional calculations in the generalized gradient approximation. The lowest-energy supercell ordering proved more stable than the lowest-energy parent cell ordering, and also yielded a pseudotetragonal distortion (space group Pnc2) and a calculated diffraction pattern that qualitatively match experimental results. The structural influences that contribute to the low energy of the correct vacancy ordering are described in detail. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rotationally resolved S1←S0 fluorescence excitation spectra of 2-chloronaphthalene (2ClN) are measured using a newly constructed ultraviolet (UV) laser/molecular beam spectrometer. More than 1000 well-resolved rotational lines are recorded at a resolution of ∼3 MHz for the two overlapping band origins of the 35Cl and 37Cl isotopomers (Δνorigin∼3 GHz) over a 3.5 cm−1 spectral region at a rotational temperature of 10 K. Both spectra are hybrid bands, having 18% a-/82% b-type character in accordance with 1La←1A1 excitations observed for other 2-substituted naphthalenes. Additionally, Cl nuclear quadrupole splittings are observed as broadened asymmetric line shapes with linewidths from 5 to 20 MHz. Least-squares fits of these line shapes coupled with high-precision Fourier-transform microwave measurements of the ground state have provided accurate S1 quadrupole coupling constants. Specified relative to the principal quadrupole tensor orientation of S0, the S0 and S1 values of eQqzz are −71.198(5) MHz and −67.8(30) MHz, and the asymmetry parameters, η=(eQqyy−eQqxx)/eQqzz, are 0.076 38(5) and 0.13(5), respectively. The experimental line shapes are fit to Voigt functions, yielding 4.9(3) MHz homogeneous (lifetime) and 3.0(2) MHz inhomogeneous (Doppler) contributions. All of the observed structure are well reproduced by more than 20 000 transitions predicted for the nuclear-quadrupole-split rotational spectra of the two hybrid-band origins. Furthermore, the homogeneous linewidths show no dependence on either the upper state energy or angular momentum quantum numbers. The absence of additional level structure at the resolution of 1 MHz or more, from heavy-atom-enhanced intersystem crossing mechanisms, is discussed within the framework of radiationless transition theory. The quadrupole tensor components are used in simple theoretical models to investigate the orbital character of the S1 state and its radiationless decay mechanisms. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Past reports suggest that reduced P300 amplitude is associated with risk for alcoholism. We examined whether visual P300 amplitude could identify familial risk for alcohol disorders in individuals not known to be at risk at the time P300 was recorded. These individuals were twins from pairs where neither twin had an alcohol disorder at age 17 but familial risk was established at age 20 when one twin developed an alcohol disorder whereas the other did not. Of special interest was the P300 of the unaffected twin recorded at age 17 when both twins were alcoholism free. We found reduced P300 in the unaffected twin compared to pairs where both members were continuously disorder free. Hence, P300 was reduced in alcohol disorder-free individuals whose twin siblings subsequently developed alcoholism, further supporting reduced P300 amplitude as an endophenotype indexing familial risk for alcoholism.

Notes: There has been substantial interest in mindfulness as an approach to reduce cognitive vulnerability to stress and emotional distress in recent years. However, thus far mindfulness has not been defined operationally. This paper describes the results of recent meetings held to establish a consensus on mindfulness and to develop conjointly a testable operational definition. We propose a two-component model of mindfulness and specify each component in terms of specific behaviors, experiential manifestations, and implicated psychological processes. We then address issues regarding temporal stability and situational specificity and speculate on the conceptual and operational distinctiveness of mindfulness. We conclude this paper by discussing implications for instrument development and briefly describing our own approach to measurement.

Notes: As businesses progress through their organizational lifecycle, many experience growing pains associated with increased volume, product line breadth, personnel, and the complexity associated with managing larger businesses. It is essential that the company have the ability to recognize these and develop methods of dealing with them if they expect to survive. While many authors address the area of how to grow in terms of marketing, product development and financing and, while they note that there are risks to rapid growth, little information is available on how to recognize trouble spots, analyze them and accommodate them. The product profile is a management tool that helps decision-makers to identify problems that have evolved through time and to identify impending opportunities on the horizon. Discusses the advantages of adapting product profiling to services to identify and accommodate growing pains and then provides an example of its successful use by a service company.

Notes: Manufacturing strategy literature continues to be split between process and content. Content has continually evolved and more precise applications have been developed. Process has lagged behind because of the difficulty in conducting research in this area. Little has been developed since the introduction of the product profiling mechanism. This study presents a methodology that extends the product profiling technique, resulting in more appropriate content recommendations. Two case examples, one manufacturing operation and one service operation, are provided to demonstrate the improved performance of the product profile when combined with simulation. In both cases, problem symptoms caused the organization to seek help in scheduling operations. Cursory study clearly indicated that neither organization had a scheduling problem, but rather, an improper relationship between the marketing and operations functions of the organizations. In both cases, it was possible to demonstrate, with product profiling, the lack of coordination between the marketing and operating functions of the organizations. Product profiling alone, however, was not sufficient to convince either organization to implement proper solutions. When changes were supplemented with a graphical simulation analysis, both organizations agreed with the recommendations and began implementing change.

Notes: Spinning the truth is deception caused by adding, subtracting, and partially displaying information while communicating with others. A theoretical framework of six elements of truth spinning was developed from the literature and tested empirically. Two dimensions of truth spinning in schools emerged - principal spin and teacher spin. Reliable and valid scales for each were developed, and truth spinning was related to the theoretically relevant constructs of role conflict, powerlessness, and trust.

Notes: The construct of enabling school structure is empirically analyzed in this qualitative study of high schools. First, the theoretical underpinning of enabling school structure is developed. Then, six high schools, which were determined to have enabling structures in a large quantitative study of Ohio schools, were analyzed in depth using semi-structured interviewing techniques. The inquiry fleshes out the specifics of the performance of principals and teachers in such organizations and describes the dynamics of enabling school structures in terms of their formalization, centralization, and functioning. Finally, the research demonstrates a natural and symbiotic relation between quantitative and qualitative approaches to the study of schools.

Notes: The impact of service recovery attributions in determining consumers' intentions of engaging in post-recovery word-of-mouth behaviors is examined. Research questions are investigated utilizing satisfactory service recovery scenarios that vary in their perceived likelihood of reoccurrence (i.e. stability) and responsibility for the recovery (i.e. locus) in three service industries. Results indicate that consumers who have service failures satisfactorily corrected demonstrate a strong propensity to share positive information about their experience. As a person's social network extends outward, stability and locus interact to influence intentions to discuss a service failure/recovery. A greater propensity to share information and higher levels of customer praise and recommendations were found for shorter service recovery times. Recommendations for customer service managers are provided.
