    Notes: Abstract. Objective: Expression of CINCs was regulated differentially in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated rat macrophages. We examined whether the expression of CINCs in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated rat macrophages is similarly inhibited by anti-inflammatory drugs.¶Materials and Methods: Rat peritoneal macrophages were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide in the presence of anti-inflammatory steroids (dexamethasone, prednisolone and hydrocortisone) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (indomethacin and piroxicam). The production and mRNA expression of three types of CINCs were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and northern hybridization.¶Results: Anti-inflammatory steroids; dexamethasone, prednisolone and hydrocortisone, dose-dependently inhibited the production of CINC-1, -2 and -3, whose inhibitory patterns were similar to each other. Furthermore mRNA expression of each CINC was inhibited by dexamethasone in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, indomethacin and piroxicam were without effect. Expression of each CINC was regulated differently; the production of CINC-1 reached a maximum at 12 h and then slightly decreased after lipopolysaccharide stimulation, whereas that of CINC-2 and CINC-3 increased up to 24 h. Dexamethasone inhibited the CINCs production and mRNA expression at 9 h after lipopolysaccharide stimulation.¶Conclusions: These results indicate no difference among CINC-1, -2 and -3 in the inhibition of production and mRNA expression of CINCs by anti-inflammatory steroids, although lipopolysaccharide differentially induces expression of each CINC expression in culture of rat macrophages.

    Notes: Germanium islands were grown on a sample surface by accumulating atoms from the surrounding area through directional surface diffusion initiated by the electric field of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The Ge islands grew with a constant rate determined by the tip–sample bias voltage. The parameters of tip–sample interaction were estimated from the kinetic data for island growth by using a scaling relationship among the growth rate, the dipole moment of atoms on surfaces, and the tip–sample bias voltage. The results show that continuous atom transfer with a STM occurs with a rate significantly higher for Ge than for Si. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the direct fabrication of refractive index gratings by irreversible photoinduced bleaching (photobleaching) into azo-dye-containing polymer films with a large second-order optical nonlinearity. Gratings were formed into azo-dye-doped or attached polymer films upon exposure to an interference pattern of two laser beams from second harmonic light at 532 nm of a mode-locked Nd: yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser. To investigate whether the refractive index grating is formed into the azo-dye-containing polymer films by the two-beam interference exposure, IR spectroscopy was examined. Absorption strength from an azo bond in the exposed polymer film reduced selectively as compared with that of unexposed film. Although surface relief structure with a few nanometers depth on the polymer film was observed by using atomic force microscopy, the modulation depth of the grating was very small. So, we considered that the effect of the relief structure to diffraction efficiency obtained here is negligible. Furthermore, the grating could not be erased by light. From these results, we confirmed that the grating obtained here was mainly caused by photobleaching, not by photoinduced birefringence and/or optically induced surface relief grating. In addition, highly efficient gratings, 20% or more, could be formed by using the azo-polymer film. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The feasibility of using hot plasmas as strippers for low-energy ion beams has been investigated by measuring charge state distributions of 350 keV/u ions (12C,16O,19F) after their passage through a laser-produced plasma target. The plasma target was produced by irradiating a small pellet of lithium hydride with a Nd-glass laser. The profiles of electron densities of the plasma target were estimated from the intensity profiles of an Ar laser refracted by the plasma. The intensities of ions with different charge states were simultaneously measured using a time-resolved magnetic spectrograph. It was found that this plasma can yield higher charge states than conventional gaseous or solid strippers. Results of a numerical analysis are compared with the experimental data to explain the observed stripping capability of the plasma. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magneto-photoluminescence from mesa-shaped Cd0.95Mn0.05Te/Cd0.90Mg0.10Te quantum wires were studied. The Zeeman shift of the excitonic photoluminescence from the quantum wires in a magnetic field is significantly decreased, compared to that from quantum wells. This decrease results from the possible reduction of the exchange interaction of electrons and holes with Mn ions in low dimensional structures. In the excitonic photoluminescence of the quantum wires with the width of 50–100 nm, the transient relaxation of the luminescence peak energy due to the excitonic magnetic polaron formation is remarkably less than that in the quantum well. This result shows the suppressed excitonic magnetic polaron effect in the narrower quantum wires. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The analysis of the rectangular Hall effect device consists of an anisotropic material, two input-current electrodes, and two output-voltage electrodes is shown. The Hall voltages are numerically analyzed by using an affine transformation and a conformal representation. The voltages are shown in the graphical form. In addition, an approximate formula for Hall voltage is presented with the useful range for the ratio of the sides of the rectangular sample. The measuring method of the Hall constant of anisotropic materials is also shown. The result in this article includes that of a well-known Hall voltage for an isotropic material. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The authors have developed a 2.45 MeV neutron double crystal time-of-flight (DC–TOF) spectrometer for deuterium plasmas in JT-60U. The DC–TOF neutron spectrometer consists of two fast plastic scintillators (BC-408 made by Bicron, 50 cm2 and 1800 cm2, thickness 2 cm), located on constant TOF spheres. The constant TOF spheres have a radius of 1 m which gives a neutron flight length of 1.64 m and a TOF of 92 ns for 2.45 MeV neutrons. The calculated spectrometer efficiency and resolution are 2.8×10−2 cm2 and 100 keV, respectively. The energy resolution corresponds to a time resolution of 2.0 ns. The spectrometer has been installed in the basement of JT-60U, 10 m away from the plasma center with vertical line-of-sight. Neutron energy spectra have been obtained when the neutron yield from the plasma is ∼1015 neutrons/s. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: As a part of development of nuclear instrumentation for the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER), technical feasibility of a fusion power monitor based on activation of water flow was studied. The fusion power monitor determines D–T neutron yield, i.e., fusion power, by measuring 6.1 and 7.1 MeV γ rays accompanied by disintegration of 16N nuclei that are produced by the 16O(n,p) 16N reactions with 14 MeV neutrons in water. The fusion power monitor consists of a water pipe loop laid from the first wall to the outside of the bioshield and a γ-ray detector, e.g., a BGO scintillator. Fusion power can be measured in an absolute value by this monitor similar to a neutron activation method with a pneumatic tube system; in addition, this monitor has a feature that continuously measures the fusion power with time resolution faster than 1 s. This monitor also has other excellent features in terms of long-term stability, sensitivity only for D–T neutrons and being maintenance free. In order to confirm the technical feasibility of the fusion power monitor based on activation of water flow, experiments for dependence of 16N γ-ray yield on the velocity of water flow and for time response were carried out. It was found that the time response was described in a turbulent flow model, and time resolution of 50 ms that fully satisfied the time resolution of 100 ms required from plasma diagnostics was achieved. Furthermore, detection sensitivity of the fusion power monitor when it is applied to the ITER was estimated based on the experimental results; it was determined that the monitor had sufficiently high sensitivity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background. Recently, the acquisition by Helicobacter pylori of resistance to antibiotics has become a serious problem. Therefore, nonantibiotic substances are required to diminish H. pylori-induced gastric lesions. In the present study, the effects of Cladosiphon fucoidan were examined in terms of H. pylori attachment to porcine gastric mucin in vitro and Helicobacter pylori-induced gastritis in vivo.Methods. The inhibitory effect of Cladosiphon fucoidan and other polysaccharides on H. pylori attachment to porcine gastric mucin was assayed in vitro with mucin-coated microtiter plates. The effect of Cladosiphon fucoidan on H. pylori-induced gastritis was examined in vivo using Mongolian gerbils. H. pylori-inoculated gerbils were given fucoidan in drinking water. Six weeks after H. pylori-inoculation, gerbils were sacrificed for macroscopic and microscopic examination of gastric lesions and counting of viable H. pylori in the gastric mucosa.Results. Cladosiphon fucoidan inhibited the H. pylori attachment to porcine gastric mucin at pH 2.0 and 4.0. Two other sulfated polysaccharides, Fucus fucoidan and dextran sulfate sodium, also inhibited the attachment but only at pH 2.0. Inhibitory effects of these three sulfated polysaccharides were not observed at pH 7.2 and nonsulfated polysaccharides, such as mannan and dextran, exerted no influence at any pH. In the in vivo experiment, the H. pylori-induced gastritis and the prevalence of H. pylori infected animals were markedly reduced by fucoidan in a dose-dependent manner, at doses of 0.05 and 0.5% in the drinking water.Conclusion. Cladosiphon fucoidan may deserve particular attention as a safe agent that can prevent H. pylori infection and reduce the risk of associated gastric cancer.

    Notes: Abstract  We report a rare case of concomitant pulmonary embolectomy and excision of a left atrial myxoma. A 64-year-old obese woman developed a pulmonary embolism 13 days after an operation for a brain tumor. Echocardiography revealed a 3-cm left atrial mass attached to the atrial septum. Urgent surgery, including pulmonary embolectomy and excision of the left atrial mass, was performed. Histopathology confirmed that the mass was a left atrial myxoma. The postoperative course was uneventful.
