Notes: : King salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) packaged in air (AIR), nitrogen (N2), or 40:60 carbon dioxide:nitrogen (CO2N2) was stored (0 °C) for 18, 25, and 54 d, respectively. Air packs (AIR9) were also stored at 9 °C for 4 d. A quality index (QI) method was developed to monitor sensory quality of cooked salmon. First detection of spoilage was 1.5, 15, 15, and 21 d for AIR9, AIR, N2, and CO2N2 treatments respectively. Total aerobic and sulfide-producing bacteria, pH, drip loss, Eh, color, texture, ATP derivatives, trimethylamine, total volatile base nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid numbers, and peroxide values were determined. Only total aerobic counts and hypoxanthine were indicators of sensory deterioration across treatments and times.

Notes: The effects of proton irradiation on strained InAsxP1−x/InP-based quantum well solar cells (QWSCs) have been investigated by the electron beam induced current (EBIC) and cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques. From analysis of the EBIC data, capture rates within the quantum well region have been estimated, from which the open circuit voltages of the cells were calculated and shown to agree well with the measured values. Diffusion lengths have been estimated from analysis of both the EBIC and CL measurements. The location of the energy levels of proton-induced defects and their effectiveness as nonradiative recombination centers have been determined from Arrhenius plots of the total CL intensity emitted from the quantum wells following irradiation. The results suggest that deeper and narrower quantum wells increase the sensitivity of QWSCs to radiation damage. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Laboratory-reared king salmon were harvested using CO2 anesthetizing (CO2) or by rested harvesting techniques using AQUI-S(tm) anesthetizing (AQUI-S). Fish were killed by spiking, and flesh portions were stored in air packs (0°C) for 22 d. Headspace oxygen levels, sensory characteristics (raw and cooked), tensile properties, drip loss, gaping, pH, nucleotide derivatives, color, and bacterial counts were determined after 5 to 22 d of storage. All parameters except tensile properties showed significant trends with storage time. Oxygen levels were consistently lower in CO2 packs whereas, on average, drip was lower in AQUI-S samples, and L*-values and bacterial numbers were higher in AQUI-S samples. Overall, harvesting effects had minimal impact on the quality parameters measured.
