Notes: Background Interleukin (IL)-13 is an important cytokine secreted from type 2 helper T lymphocytes. It is essential for modulating IgE synthesis by human B cells. Previous studies showed that polymorphisms in the IL-13 gene were associated with serum total IgE or allergic asthma. The relationship of this marker with sensitization to individual aeroallergens has not been evaluated. Objective We tested whether a polymorphism in the coding region of the IL-13 gene is associated with asthma and atopy in asthmatic children in Hong Kong. Methods We used restriction fragment length polymorphism to detect R130Q genotype in Chinese children with asthma and control subjects. Serum total IgE was measured by microparticle immunoassay and specific IgE to common aeroallergens was measured using fluorescent enzyme immunoassay. Pulmonary function studies were performed using spirometry. Results One hundred and fifty-seven patients and 54 control children were recruited. Their mean serum total IgE concentrations were 994 kIU/L and 473 kIU/L, respectively (P 〈 0.0001). Atopy as defined by ≥ 1 positive RAST was found in 141 patients and 32 control children. The GlnGln form of the R130Q polymorphism in the IL-13 gene was associated with serum total IgE (P = 0.005) as well as specific IgE to Der p 1 (P = 0.021), mixed cockroaches (P = 0.03) and dog (P = 0.003) but not with physician-diagnosed asthma (P = 0.621). In addition, the R130Q polymorphism did not correlate with subjective or objective indicators of asthma severity in our patients. Conclusion Our results suggest that the R130Q polymorphism of the IL-13 gene is associated with elevated serum total and allergen-specific IgE but not asthma in Chinese children.

Notes: Nd3(Fe,Ti)29−xCox compounds with Nd3(Fe,Ti)29-type structure have been synthesized with x=0, 1.61, 3.22, 4.83, and 6.44. The easy magnetization directions of all these compounds are found to be in the basal plane. The Curie temperature increases strongly with increasing Co content. Substitution of Co for Fe leads to a monotonic increase of the saturation magnetization. The spin reorientation transitions are found for all of these compounds, and the spin-reorientation temperature decreases with increasing Co content. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Large magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) of −2700 ppm has been obtained from the Heusler alloy Ni52Mn23Ga25 at 300 K. The temperature for structure transformation was confirmed by three types of magnetic measurements. A burst of MFIS up to 5400 ppm could be induced by rotating a steady field of 1 T. In the martensitic phase, the material have a high saturated magnetization of 66 Am2/kg and a high anisotropy of 0.8 T. The variant reorientation mainly occurred in the region of 0.2–0.8 T. The large MFIS is sensitive to temperature, suggesting that it can only be induced when martensite and parent phase are coexisted. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties of RFe12−xNbx and R(Fe1−yCoy)11.3Nb0.7 compounds with R=Y, Tb, and Dy have been investigated in the concentration region defined by 0.6〈x〈0.8 and y≤0.3, where the compounds are single phase with the ThMn12-type of structure. The Curie temperature TC of the RFe12−xNbx compounds is almost independent of the Nb content whereas the saturation magnetization Ms decreases with increasing Nb content. The spin-reorientation temperature Tsr of the TbFe12−xNbx and DyFe12−xNbx compounds decreases monotonically with increasing x. Substitution of Co for Fe in RFe11.3Nb0.7 leads to a remarkable increase of TC and the appearance of a maximum in the Co-concentration dependence of Ms. In contrast, Tsr decreases monotonically with increasing Co content for both R=Tb and Dy. The modification of T- and R-sublattice anisotropy originating from a change of the Nb content and from substitution of Co for Fe was analyzed by combining crystalline electric field theory and the individual-site model. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: SiO2/Ge:SiO2/SiO2 sandwiched structure was fabricated for exploring efficient light emission. After annealed in N2 (O2〈1%), this structure shows three photoluminescence (PL) bands at 293, 395, and 780 nm. The intensity of the 395 nm band is largely enhanced in comparison with that from the monolayered Ge:SiO2 film. Spectral analyses suggest that the three PL bands originate from S1→S0, T∑(T∏)→S0, and T∏′→S0 optical transitions in GeO color centers, respectively. The improvement of the GeO density resulting from the confinement on Ge diffusion is responsible for the enhanced ultraviolet PL. This structure is expected to have important applications in optoelectronics. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A series of Al-doped amorphous silicon oxide films have been grown on p-type silicon (100) substrates by a dual ion beam cosputtering method. Visible electroluminescence (EL) from the devices, made by films with different contents of Al, can be seen with the naked eye under forward bias and reverse bias for films containing sufficient amounts of Al. The EL spectra are found to have a luminescence band peaked at 510 nm (2.4 eV), which is the same result as that obtained from silicon oxide films. With the increase in the amounts of Al, the peak position does not shift, the onset of the bias decreases, and the intensity of EL peak increases. Experiment results show that the doping of Al is beneficial to improving the conduction condition of films while the structure of the films associated with luminescence centers is affected hardly at all. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Double perovskite Ba2FeMoO6 has been prepared by a wet chemistry method and its magnetocaloric effect has been studied. The Ba2FeMoO6 sample, consisting of crystallites with diameter of 130 nm and average aspect ratio of 15, exhibits a sharp magnetic transition. The maximum of the magnetic entropy change peaks at its Curie temperature (340 K), and a large magnetic entropy change ( $\sim$ 1.54 J/kg K, or $\sim$ 0.081 J/mol (atoms) K) is obtained upon 10 kOe applied magnetic field change. For comparison, the magnetic properties of Ba2FeMoO6 prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction was also investigated.
