Notes: Recent etiological study in twins (Tanner et al. 1999) strongly suggests that environmental factors play an important role in typical, non-familial Parkinson's disease (PD), beginning after age 50. Epidemiological risk factor analyses of typical PD cases have identified several neurotoxicants, including MPP+ (the active metabolite of MPTP), paraquat, dieldrin, manganese and salsolinol. Here, we tested the hypothesis that these neurotoxic agents might induce cell death in our nigral dopaminergic cell line, SN4741 (Son et al. 1999) through a common molecular mechanism. Our initial experiments revealed that treatment with both MPP+ and the other PD-related neurotoxicants induced apoptotic cell death in SN4741 cells, following initial increases of H2O2-related ROS activity and subsequent activation of JNK1/2 MAP kinases. Moreover, we have demonstrated that during dopaminergic cell death cascades, MPP+, the neurotoxicants and an oxidant, H2O2 equally induce the ROS-dependent events. Remarkably, the oxidant treatment alone induced similar sequential molecular events: ROS increase, activation of JNK MAP kinases, activation of the PITSLRE kinase, p110, by both Caspase-1 and Caspase-3-like activities and apoptotic cell death. Pharmacological intervention using the combination of the antioxidant Trolox and a pan-caspase inhibitor Boc-(Asp)-fmk (BAF) exerted significant neuroprotection against ROS-induced dopaminergic cell death. Finally, the high throughput cDNA microarray screening using the current model identified downstream response genes, such as heme oxygenase-1, a constituent of Lewy bodies, that can be the useful biomarkers to monitor the pathological conditions of dopaminergic neurons under neurotoxic insult.

Notes: The granular film deposition of gold atoms by means of thermal evaporation on silicon oxide surfaces is known to produce nanometer-scale islands which show electrical characteristics dominated by Coulomb blockade. Here we report on the growth and the simulation of structures produced by a combination of evaporation and lithography. A lithographic technique is used to define a region of a width of several nm that is surrounded by polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The PMMA confines the diffusion of the atoms, and the growth process is characterized by different boundary conditions compared with the case where atoms are deposited on a macroscopic surface. This method enables us to create quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) and 1D structures in which the gold islands are arranged in a single row where the lateral size is only a few nanometers. Such structures offer the possibility of studying Coulomb blockade in 1D arrays and a signature of self-organized growth is observed in such structures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the context of a Cournot duopoly, this paper studies the licensing of a cost-reducing innovation by means of three possible allocation mechanisms: auction, fixed fee, and direct negotiation. Once the use of an arbitrary reserve price (which is not credible) has been excluded, it is no longer true that auction always yields higher profit to the patentee than a fixed fee. However, the authors propose a direct negotiation mechanism which restores the patentee’s profit to the level of an auction with an arbitrary reserve price (which is unimplementable). Direct negotiation is superior to both an auction with a nonarbitrary reserve price and a fixed fee. From the social point of view, however, licensing with a fixed fee is the best option.

Notes: Epitaxially grown magnetic tunnel junctions MgO(100)/Fe/MgO/Fe/Co/Pd have been elaborated by molecular beam epitaxy, with insulating layer thickness down to 0.8 nm. The continuity of this layer was checked at different spatial scales by means of morphological (high resolution transmission electronic microscopy), electric (local impedance), and magnetic (magnetoresistance and hysteresis loop) measurements. These junctions show a low resistance (4 kΩ μm2), tunnel magnetoresistance up to 17%, and a very small interlayer magnetic coupling. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Precise measurements of the deformation and fracture behaviour of food can be difficult because of problems associated with the produce, for example, sample preparation, gripping, size and geometry. The aim of this study was to characterise fruits and vegetables in terms of fracture properties using an established engineering test method and geometry, the Single-Edge Notched Bend (SENB). The SENB geometry was found to be readily applicable to crisp food produce such as carrots, celery, and apples, which exhibit linear elastic behaviour up to fracture. Fracture toughness and fracture energies were found to be in the range 10–50 kPa m1/2 and 40–400 Jm−2, respectively. The structure of these materials was confirmed, using confocal microscopy, and related to the observed fracture behaviour. Cell size and intercellular spaces influenced the values of fracture toughness and fracture energy.

Notes: A simple test from materials science, in which a notched beam is bent so that the notch increases in length due to the propagation of a crack, allows determination of a parameter called the Critical Stress Intensity Factor in Mode I fracture, KIC, by means of which the conditions under which the crack will propagate can be quantified. This is shown to track sensory hardness of several apples, carrot, celery and cucumber with remarkable precision, a result predicted by theoretical analysis due to Lucas et al. (2002). Hardness and crunchiness are shown to be indistinguishable and therefore must be identical. Therefore, a mechanical test can reliably replace a sensory test resulting in quicker, cheaper and more accurate estimate of a sensory parameter.

Notes: A 2.45 GHz ECR ion source for the ISAC on-line operation is being tested at the TRIUMF ion source test stand prior to its installation in the radioactive ion beam production target module. Steps were taken at the design stage to ensure short transient time and high ionization efficiency for single charged ions. Further considerations were given to radiation hardness, reliability, and remote handling capabilities. Transient time was measured using an ultrafast piezoelectric valve. Efficiencies were measured using calibrated gas leaks of stable and radioactive isotopes such as 127Xe. This article describes the overall characteristics of the source. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Strategic alliances, one component of a total quality management program, break down linkages of a supply chain and help alliance partners to address new markets that could not be economically satisfied by a single firm. In recent years, through numerous press releases and anecdotal references, there have been an increased number of reported strategic alliances. However, there have been no systematic studies of the prevalence and impact of strategic alliances in specific industries and no way to obtain information on the costs and benefits of these formal relationships. This current research addresses these gaps. As part of a long-term longitudinal research program covering diverse industries, two different industries, one in products (food and beverages) and the other in services (executive recruiting) were studied to determine the extent of penetration and effectiveness of strategic alliances. This paper presents examples of strategic alliances and the survey results describing penetration, types of alliances, business benefits, and expected costs.

Notes: [Auszug] Cultured primary human cells inevitably enter a state of replicative senescence for which the specific molecular trigger is unknown. We show that the single-strand telomeric overhang, a key component of telomere structure, is eroded at senescence. Expression of telomerase prevents overhang loss, ...
