Notes: The electrical properties of CdTe and Cd1−xZnxTe crystals grown under excess tellurium by a modified Bridgman technique are critically dependent on the zinc content. Below an x value of 0.07, the as-grown CdZnTe crystals are n type while, above this value, CdZnTe crystals are p type. The origin of the shallow donor level at 0.01 eV below the conduction band is most likely singly ionized Te antisites (Te at Cd sites). The origin of the deep donor level at 0.75 eV below the conduction band is therefore doubly ionized tellurium antisites. Based on this model, the conduction type of CdZnTe crystals is determined by the results of compensation between the shallow donors of Te antisites and the shallow acceptors of Cd vacancies. High resistivity Cd0.9Zn0.1Te crystals are produced by compensating the p-type crystals with indium impurity at a low doping level of 1–5×1015 cm−3. At room temperature, CdZnTe radiation detectors can resolve the six low energy peaks in the 241Am spectrum, a performance comparable to that of the best CdZnTe detectors reported. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary This paper presents numerical results for the steady-state mixed convection in micropolar fluids along a vertical wavy surface. The problem has been formulated by a simple trnasposition theorem, and the spline alternating-direction implicit method has been applied to solve the governing momentum, angular momentum and energy equations. The influence of the micropolar parameters (R and λ), the amplitude-wave length ratio and the Gr/Re2 number on the skin-friction coefficient and Nusselt number have been studied. Results demonstrate that the skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number consist of a mixture of two harmonics in micropolar fluids and in Newtonian fluids. As the vortex viscosity parameter (R) increases, the heat transfer rate decreases but the skin friction increases. In addition, when the spin gradient viscosity parameter (λ) increases, the heat transfer rate and the skin friction decreases. However, the heat transfer rate of a micropolar fluid is smaller than a Newtonian fluid, but the skin friction of a micropolar fluid is larger than a Newtonian fluid under all circumstances.

Notes: This work optimises the cutting of Al2O3/6061Al composite using rotary electro-discharging machining (EDM) with a disklike electrode by using Taguchi methodology. The Taguchi method is used to formulate the experimental layout, to analyse the effect of each EDM parameter on the machining characteristics, and to predict the optimal choice for each EDM parameter. Four observed values, MRR, EWR, REWR, and SR, are used to verify this optimisation of the machining technique. In addition, six independent parameters are chosen as variables in evaluating the Taguchi method and are categorised into two groups: 1. Electrical parameters, e.g. polarity, peak current, pulse duration, and powder supply voltage. 2. Non-electrical parameters, e.g. circumferential speed of electrode, reciprocating speed. The analysis of the Taguchi method reveals that, in general, the electrical group more significantly affects the machining characteristics than the non-electrical group. Also derived herein are semi-empirical equation that contain all of the machining characteristics. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

Notes: Abstract Computer vision systems are employed to determine the major and minor lengths of deformed elliptic grids while determining a sheet metal's workability. The existing method identifies the ellipse using the least squares analysis. It suffers two drawbacks: assumptions in direct conflict with the observed real-world processes and an undesirable property of orientation dependence. For the remedy, this paper presents a new method that, in addition to achieving the desired property of orientation invariance, discards assumptions that conflict with real-world processes. The proposed method is implemented and tested using simulated and real-world data. Results are reported and compared with those obtained by the existing method.
