Notes: Abstract. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease most prevalent in women between the ages of twenty and sixty. Successful treatment remains challenging due to a lack of understanding of the underlying mechanisms and multiple symptoms ranging from skin rashes to glomerulonephritis. The pathogenesis of SLE has been linked to a B-cell hyperproliferation unique to afflicted patients. These B-cells generate large quantities of IgG autoantibodies, ultimately capable of leading to lupus nephritis and renal failure. The significance of cytokines in SLE and in murine lupus, a related disease in mice, has been debated, particularly with respect to B-cell activity. Potential roles of auto-regulatory and inflammatory cytokines have been investigated. In particular, IL-6 and IL-10 have been shown to be key factors in regulating autoantibody-secreting B-cell activity in lupus. Here, we will provide a critical overview of our current knowledge of the regulatory roles of these two cytokines in SLE.

Notes: Objective To determine how diet of the mother in pregnancy influences the blood pressure of the offspring in adult life.Design A follow up study of men and women born during 1948–1954 whose mothers had taken part in a survey of diet in late pregnancy.Setting Aberdeen, Scotland.Population Two hundred and fifty-three men and women born in Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.Main outcome measure Systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Results The relations between the diet of mothers and their offsprings' blood pressure were complex. When the mothers' intake of animal protein was less than 50 g daily, a higher carbohydrate intake was associated with a higher blood pressure in the offspring (a 100 g increase in carbohydrate being associated with a 3 mmHg increase in systolic pressure (P= 0.02)). At daily animal protein intakes above 50 g, lower Carbohydrate intake was associated with higher blood pressure (a 100 g decrease in carbohydrate being associated with an 11 mmHg rise in systolic blood pressure (P= 0.004)). These increases in blood pressure were associated with decreased placental size. Conclusion Mothers' intakes of animal protein and carbohydrate in late pregnancy may influence their offsprings' adult blood pressure. This may be mediated through effects on placental growth.

Notes: The surface, structural, and optical properties of InAs/InGaSb/AlSb mid-infrared lasers grown by molecular beam epitaxy have been systematically studied, respectively, by Nomarski differential interference contrast, high-resolution x-ray diffraction, and variable-temperature photoluminescence. It is found that the optimum growth temperature is between 400 and 450 °C, based on the calibrated transmission thermometry. In addition, the impact of interfacial bond type and Sb sources has been investigated. A 5.91 μm laser, grown with the optimal growth parameters, exhibits a maximum cw operating temperature of 210 K. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A wide bandpass x-ray polarizer for photon energies near 8358 eV (LIII absorption edge of erbium) has been grown using molecular beam epitaxy. The results illustrate a general approach to preparing graded-lattice diffracting optical components. The active optical element is an 8-μm-thick single crystal film of In0.51Ga0.49Sb grown on a GaAs (001) substrate. The alloy was chosen to ensure maximum linear polarization for the (006) Bragg reflection at the target energy. The polarizer reflectivity has a full width at half-maximum of 27 eV in a fixed geometry with an angle of 90° between the incident and diffracted beams. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Diffraction anomalous fine-structure (DAFS) experiments measure Bragg peak intensities as continuous functions of photon energy near a core-level excitation. Measuring the integrated intensity at each energy makes the experiments prohibitively slow; however, in many cases DAFS can be collected quickly by measuring only the peak intensity at the center of the rocking curve. A piezoelectric-actuator-driven stage has been designed and tested as part of a sample-angle feedback circuit for locking onto the maximum of the rocking curve while the energy is scanned. Although software peak-tracking requires only a simple calculation of diffractometer angles, it is found that the additional hardware feedback dramatically improves the reproducibility of the data.

Notes: Abstract Thin boron films were produced on Si substrates from a solid boron source and a hydrogen plasma. The plasma was generated using a 13.56 MHz generator and films were deposited with a forward radio frequency (RF) power of 2.0 kW. At pressures from 0.931–2.26×102 Pa under high hydrogen concentrations a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) was observed whereas at low hydrogen concentrations an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was observed. The films were predominantly deposited with an ICP but in one case a film was deposited using a CCP discharge. The deposited films consisted primarily of boron, but they also contained oxygen and silicon. The films were amorphous at 225 and 350°C, but revealed X-ray diffractions at 475°C. It was concluded that the hydrogen concentration, RF plasma power and surface temperature as well as the plasma-boron source interactions strongly influenced the film thickness and composition.

Notes: Abstract  One third of children with autistic spectrum disorders (or pervasive developmental disorders) enter that state by regression from a more normal prior development at the onset of epilepsy or epileptiform abnormality in the electroencephalogram. In a very small proportion structural lesions of the temporal lobes are discovered. These form part of the sample of children coming to a surgical treatment programme. Ninety-eight child candidates for epilepsy surgery were seen by one neuropsychiatrist. Their psychiatric diagnoses were coded on DSM IV schedules. Other variables of interest were the age at onset of epilepsy; the nature, the side, and time of acquisition of the lesion; intelligence, and sex. There were 19 children with autistic spectrum disorders including eight with Asperger's syndrome. Ten of the children in the autistic group had right brain lesions; six were dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumours (DNETs); two were cortical dysplasias; one tuberous sclerosis; one hemi-cortical defect; and 1 mesial temporal sclerosis. Nine started epilepsy in their first year; nine had IQs in the retarded range; nine of the 11 were male. Six of eight Asperger's children had right brain lesions; two DNETs; four mesial temporal sclerosis; one Rasmussen encephalitis. Four started epilepsy in their first year; one was retarded; five were female. Children who had no, or other, psychiatric disorder also showed “mass” lesions, or temporal sclerosis but with different biases as to side, sex, and very early onset of epilepsy from the autistic spectrum group. Very early onset of epilepsy, with lesions of embryonal origin, in the right temporal lobe, strongly predisposed males towards autistic regression. Such patients should be referred very early for consideration of urgent surgical treatment.
