    Notizen: Four novel antiviral WIN compounds, that contain a methyl tetrazole ring as well as isoxazole, pyridazine or acetylfuran rings, have had their structures determined in human rhinovirus serotype 14 at 2.9 Å resolution. These compounds bind in the VP1 hydrophobic pocket, but are shifted significantly towards the pocket pore when compared to previously examined WIN compounds. A putative water network at the pocket pore is positioned to hydrogen bond with these four WIN compounds, and this network can account for potency differences seen in structurally similar WIN compounds.

    Notizen: Abstract The adsorption of NO at 80°C on Cu-overexchanged ZSM-5 (Si/Al=80) has been investigated in a flow apparatus. The formation of N2O during a transient phase was observed after He pretreatment of the zeolite at 550°C. A negligible amount of N2O was detected, in contrast, from O2 pretreated zeolite. The formation of N2O has been associated to the reoxidation from Cu+ to Cu2+ of a fraction (about 40%) of copper in the zeolite. The redox chemistry in NO adsorption at low temperature can be related to the activity of Cu-ZSM-5 zeolite in NO decomposition.

    Notizen: Summary The action of glutamate on frog ampullar receptors was investigated to assess the potential role of this excitatory amino acid as an afferent transmitter in the hair cell system. Intracellular recordings from single afferent units in the isolated labyrinth revealed that glutamate and the glutamate receptor agonists, N-methyl-D-aspartic acid, quisqualic acid and kainic acid increase dose-dependently the frequency of the resting afferent discharge of EPSPs and spikes and produce long lasting depolarizations. After blocking synaptic transmission by using 5 mM Co2+, the same compounds elicited only depolarizations of amplitude comparable to those observed in normal saline. Quisqualic acid and kainic acid were much more potent than N-methyl-D-aspartic acid in increasing the frequency of afferent discharge and in causing axonal depolarizations. The depolarization caused by glutamate was reduced dose-dependently by the competitive non-NMDA receptor antagonist 6-cyano-7-nitroquinaxoline-2,3 dione and disappeared almost completely in Na+-free Ringer solution. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that glutamate is the afferent transmitter in vestibular organs and indicate that receptors mainly of the non-NMDA type are present not only at postsynaptic level but also in hair cells. Presynaptic glutamate receptors may function as autoreceptors controlling by a positive feed-back mechanism the release of the afferent transmitter.

    Notizen: Abstract In the present work an experimental comparison is made between two adaptation strategies: the Judd's method and the Everhart's method. A NACA 0012 airfoil has been tested at Mach numbers up to 0.4: models with chords up to 200 mm have been tested in a 200 mm × 200 mm test section. The two strategies, though based on different theoretical approaches, show a fairly good agreement as far as c p distribution on the model, lift and drag curves and residual interference are concerned and agree, in terms of lift curve slope and drag coefficient at zero lift, with the McCroskey correlation.

    Notizen: Abstract We reviewed 41 studies on epilepsy surgery in 1645 children and adolescents. The available data vary greatly from one paper to another, particularly as regards the age of the patients included, selection criteria, presurgical methodology, and the type of surgical intervention. Moreover, the surgical results are classified according to very different criteria. Our experience in Grenoble concerning 55 children (age ≤16 years; postoperative follow-up 〉18 months) is discussed in the light of data in the literature. The need is stressed for a consensus on the type of information that must be supplied by well-detailed studies on homogeneous groups of epilepsy surgery patients.

    Notizen: Abstract The ion exchange technique was employed for the preparation of VO2+ modified titanium phosphates as catalysts for the selective reduction of NO with NH3. The samples were prepared by contacting with a vanadyl sulphate solution different precursor materials, amorphous, crystalline or sodium half exchanged titanium phosphate. The vanadium contents of modified phosphates were in the range 0.08–2.3 wt%. XRD and thermal analysis TG/DTA showed that vanadium loading does not cause structural modification in hydrogen titanium phosphate. A vanadyl containing phase was obtained when half sodium titanium phosphate was employed. The NH3 TPD measurements indicated the presence of a wide distribution of NH3 adsorbing sites with medium-high strength. Catalytic activity measurements were performed under dilute conditions. It was found that the presence of vanadium even in low amounts strongly promote the catalytic activity.

    Notizen: Abstract The phenotypic variability of 31 seed and fruit characters was examined in 54 cultivars of Ceratonia siliqua L. collected in the South of Italy. For most of the 23 continuous characters which were examined, differences among regions of provenance were significant. Frequency distributions of 8 discrete characters are also reported. Relationships among 23 continuous descriptors were analyzed by principal component analysis in order to summarize data and reduce the number of characters. By cluster analysis based upon them the material was classed in different groups; the importance of the characters and levels of similarity among groups in relation to the provenance are discussed.

    Notizen: Abstract The seroprevalence of antibodies to measles, mumps, and rubella viruses (MMR) was determined in 1498 subjects in Catania, Italy, ranging in age from 1 month to 25 years. The study population was divided into seven age groups and sceeened by enzyme immunoassay using microquantities (10 μl) of whole blood collected by fingerprick on filterpaper discs. The results showed that seroconversion for measles (87.6%) and mumps (73.2%) occurred between 6 and 10 years of age. The seroprevalence of antibodies to rubella virus increased slowly through the age groups, reaching the highest rate (93.3%) between 16 and 20 years of age. Passively transmitted maternal antibodies to mumps and rubella were absent in babies between 5 and 8 months of age, and a few cases positive for measles antibodies were found among babies 6 and 7 months of age. The enzyme immunoassay was demonstrated to be suitable for low-cost large-scale screening for MMR immunity. The rate of vaccine failure was also evaluated and found to be 9.5% for the measles virus, 12.9% for the mumps virus and 0.0% for the rubella virus.
