Notes: Abstract Aims. To evaluate Cloninger's classification in a sample of alcoholic Spanish men. Design. A crosssectional study was carried out on subjects diagnosed as alcoholics. Setting. Out-patient units specializing in the treatment of alcoholics and the psychiatry unit of a general hospital. Participants. One hundred and ninety-eight males diagnosed as alcoholics. The mean age was 44.4 11.6 years and 98% were from urban areas. Measurements. Participants were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSMIII-R(SCID). They were classified using type 1 and type 2 criteria of Cloninger's classification. Findings. Only one-third of our sample could be classified by Cloninger's type 1 and type 2 criteria. Patients classified as belonging to type 2 had an earlier onset of regular drinking compared to type 1 patients. Type 2 subjects presented a higher percentage of alcohol-related problems as well as problems related to drugs other than alcohol and they also presented a higher percentage of antisocial personality disorder. No differences in alcoholism family history were found between the groups. Criteria showing the poorest discriminative ability between both groups were "failure to keep abstinent" and "benders lasting at least two days". Conclusions. Our results do not support Cloninger's etiological hypotheses for alcoholism. Cultural differences may be responsible for the different drinking patterns observed.

Notes: Abstract We report a case of atraumatic spontaneous posterior subluxation of the sternoclavicular joint in a 19-year-old woman without any known underlying pathology. There was no history of injury. The patient was treated operatively using the gracilis tendon to reinforce the anterior sternoclavicular ligament. One year later the patient is asymptomatic and has returned to her usual life.

Notes: Abstract  DNA marker-assisted selection was used to pyramid four bacterial blight resistance genes, Xa-4, xa-5, xa-13 and Xa-21. Breeding lines with two, three and four resistance genes were developed and tested for resistance to the bacterial blight pathogen (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae). The pyramid lines showed a wider spectrum and a higher level of resistance than lines with only a single gene. To speed up the gene pyramiding process and to facilitate future marker-aided selection, we developed PCR markers for the two recessive genes, xa-5 and xa-13, and used these to survey a range of rice germplasm. The results of the germplasm survey will be useful for the selection of parents in breeding programs aimed at transferring these bacterial blight resistance genes from one varietal background to another.

Notes: Abstract. The concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) were determined in soil samples taken from 24 sites in the vicinity of a municipal solid waste incinerator (Montcada, Barcelona, Spain). Samples were collected within a radius of 3 km in each of the three main directions of the wind rose in that area. Hepta- and octa-CDDs were the predominant congeners and contributors to TEQ. PCDD/F levels ranged from 0.30 to 44.26 ng TEQ/kg (dry matter), with median and mean values of 3.52 and 6.91 ng TEQ/kg, respectively. The highest and lowest PCDD/F concentrations were found at 750 m (44.26 ng TEQ/kg) and 3000 m (0.30 ng TEQ/kg) from the stack, while the PCDD/PCDF ratio was 1.78. The health risk analysis of the data shows that the PCDD/F intake from soils is substantially lower than the tolerable daily intake for toxicologic (other than cancer) effects of PCDD/Fs.

Notes: Abstract. In order to determine the temporal variation in the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in soils in the vicinity of an old municipal solid waste incinerator (Montcada, Barcelona, Spain), in 1997 we collected 24 soil samples at the same sampling points in which samples were taken 1 year before. Each sample was analyzed for PCDDs and PCDFs by GC/MS. While in the previous study PCDD/F concentrations ranged from 0.30 to 44.26 ng TEQ/kg (dry matter), (median and mean values: 3.52 and 6.91 ng TEQ/kg), in the present study PCDD/F levels ranged from 0.15 to 29.27 ng TEQ/kg (median and mean values: 2.56 and 4.47 ng TEQ/kg). PCDD/F concentrations decreased in 14 of the 24 soil samples, while the remaining 10 samples showed increases of different orders. No statistically significant differences in PCDD/F levels according to the main wind directions in the area were noted. In both surveys, the highest PCDD/F concentrations were found 750 m from the stack to the south. The current levels of PCDD/Fs in soils, as well as those found in the previous survey are similar or even lower than PCDD/F concentrations reported for soil samples taken near to municipal solid waste incinerators from different places.

Notes: Abstract The subject of this paper is to propose and test a set of numerical descriptors of 2D binary planar shapes. Given a shape, A, the transformations of A with a given mathematical morphological operation and different structuring elements are considered. The measures of this family of transformed sets provide a numerical description of the original set A. These descriptors are very robust against noise and maintain a reasonable discriminatory power. The robustness against different levels of contour degradation is tested by simulation. Starting with a clean (without noise) set, Λ, it is assumed that the observed set, A, is a noisy version (with contour degradation) of Λ. The performance of the descriptors, when they are used to compare different shapes or shapes from a scene with models, is studied and compared with related descriptors based on the granulometric analysis of the original set, which are the closest previous alternative to our approach in the literature.

Notes: Summary Laying data and clutch size of Great Tits were studied in four different habitats in eastern Spain: two holm oak(Quercus ilex) forests, at 500 and 900–950 m a.s.l., a zeen oak(Quercus faginea) forest, at 900–1100 m a.s.l., a pine(Pinus sylvestris) forest, at 1000–1050 m a.s.l., and orange(Citrus aurantium) plantations, at 30 m a.s.l. All sites were placed at about the same latitude (39–41°N), and all were studied during the same years (1992–95). Our results show that (1) laying date did not differ between the natural habitats at the same altitude (range of the means of yearly means 4–8 May); (2) within the same habitat type (holm oak forest) laying date was earlier at low altitude (30 Aprilvs. 8 May); (3) laying date was earlier in the orange plantations (21 April) than in natural habitats; (4) among natural habitats at the same altitude, clutch size decreased from zeen oak (mean of yearly means 7.3 eggs) to holm oak (7.0 eggs) to pine forests (6.4 eggs), though only the difference between zeen oak and pine forests was significant; (5) within the same habitat type (holm oak forest), the clutch size tended to be larger at high altitude (7.0vs. 5.9 eggs); and (6) clutch size in orange plantations (7.7 eggs) did not differ significantly from that of the zeen oak forest, but was larger than in the holm oak and pine forests. We discuss the effect of the habitat type on laying date and clutch size of Great Tits.
