Notes: Abstract. Background: The term “junctional parenchyma” (JP) has been used to represent many renal anomalies including lobar dysmorphism; however, it has not been evaluated with modalities other than ultrasound (US). Methods: Twenty-two kidneys with lobar dysmorphism incidentally found on helical computed tomography (CT) were studied. In all cases, axial, multiplanar reformation, and three-dimensional images on corticomedullary phase scans were analyzed. Fifteen additional kidneys were prospectively examined with US, and we compared those sonograms with helical CT findings. Results: Comparison of the US and helical CT findings showed that the JP defect and the JP line corresponded anatomically to the upper aspect of the renal sinus and to the thick mural cortex originating from that point, extending inferiorly, respectively. The lesions of lobar dysmorphism were situated deep in the medulla, adjacent to the cortex; however, findings on helical CT did not indicate JP. Conclusions: Although JP may have been seen on US in this study, it did not show fusion remnants of subkidneys but a combination of the upper aspect of the renal sinus, the mural cortex, and the lesion of lobar dysmorphism.

Notes: One of the problems encountered in designing a waveguide free-electron laser (FEL) is to suppress the lower-frequency branch, which may have a higher gain than the more useful higher-frequency branch. It is shown that the electron pulse length and energy spread strongly influence the competition between the gains at high and low frequency for a waveguide FEL. It is also found that the negative slippage that may take place at the lower-frequency branch results in larger reduction in gain than the positive slippage. The maximum allowable electron energy spread for both resonance frequencies is derived. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An in-vacuum minipole (short period) insertion device has been developed in a collaboration between SPring-8 and the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS). The magnetic arrays were assembled, field measured, corrected, and vacuum tested by SPring-8 and were installed in an NSLS-developed chamber with mechanical parts in the NSLS X-Ray Ring (E=2.584 GeV) in May 1997 and a successful commissioning of the device was carried out in June 1997. The device is made of permanent magnets with 30.5 periods and a period length of 11 mm. It is designed to produce fundamental radiation at 4.6 keV, and with a modest value of deflection parameter (K=0.7 at 3.3& mm gap) enables higher harmonics to be used as well, for a variety of experiments. A detailed description of the mechanical support and vacuum chamber will be reported elsewhere. We describe technical challenges encountered in constructing this type of device, and present an outline of our collaboration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new type of relativistic electron acceleration facility is being developed by the Laser Science Research Group at The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. It utilizes laser-induced photoelectrons accelerated by a compact DISKTRON electrostatic accelerator, which makes it possible to generate a controllable bright short-pulsed electron beam up to the energy of 1 MeV with a low emittance (〈2×10−5 mrad) and high current density (∼500 A/cm2) without any guiding field. The characteristics of the entire facility and some of the key components are described in detail. The experimental results which confirm the possibilities of increasing quantum efficiency of metal photocathodes by geometric alteration are reported. Observation of laser undulator effects in the visible wavelength was demonstrated in the facility. The coming use of the system includes a far-infrared/submillimeter free-electron laser using a microwiggler and generation of extreme ultraviolet radiation by the laser undulator. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Rapid thermal annealing was performed after a Bismuth-substituted Dy iron garnet-ferrite (Bi2DyFe4GaO12) was deposited on a quartz glass substrate having a hematite underlayer, and the effect of the hematite underlayer on the magneto-optical characteristics of the garnet ferrite film was evaluated. The presence of the underlayer greatly improved the magneto-optical effect of the garnet film, but the amount of improvement depended on the hematite phase. Big improvement was obtained using underlayer phases that are easily crystallized, i.e., Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3 which have a spinel structure, but not with α-Fe2O3 which has a corundum structure. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are several ways of producing circularly polarized light, such as using asymmetric devices, crossed undulators etc. The SPring-8 helical undulator introduces a simple way of producing both horizontal and vertical fields in one undulator. All the magnet arrays are arranged above and below the plane of the electron orbit, so there is no limitation of access from the sides of the undulator. For the SPring-8 BL25SU, two helical undulators will be installed in tandem, and the helicity of the polarization can be switched at up to 10 Hz using five kicker magnets.

Notes: Before the commissioning of SPring-8, the in-vacuum hybrid undulator developed at SPring-8 had been brought to the ESRF for the first beam test in the summer of 1996. The purpose of this test was to investigate the influence of the in-vacuum undulator on the beam and check its vacuum system. However, heating by the resistive wall impedance turned out to be a critical issue for the in-vacuum undulators.

Notes: A short-period in-vacuum undulator for the NSLS X-ray Ring has been developed in a collaboration between SPring-8 and the NSLS, and has achieved its project design goals during commissioning studies. The device is called IVUN (in-vacuum undulator) and employs magnet arrays (31 periods, with an 11 mm period) developed at SPring-8, while the requisite vacuum chamber and mechanical systems were developed at the NSLS. At a magnet gap of 3.3 mm, IVUN produces 4.6 keV radiation in the fundamental, with useful photon fluxes in both the second and third harmonics. The magnet gap is adjustable between 2 and 10 mm. A brief overview of IVUN is presented, together with initial commissioning results: the dependence of electron-beam lifetime and bremsstrahlung on magnet gap, and the output radiation spectrum.

Notes: Measurement of integrated magnetic induction is an important part of the construction of insertion devices. The so-called `flipping coil system' is normally utilized to characterize the integrated multipole components of the device, a requirement which varies from one storage ring to another. A Helmholtz coil system is used to determine a magnetization vector of each magnet piece in the device. Both systems are designed to measure the integrated magnetic flux to deduce the necessary quantities using the known relationship. We have developed an unconventional system which has a continuously rotating mechanism that allows the use of a lock-in amplifier instead of an integrator or a voltmeter. Detailed descriptions of the equipment are given.
