Notes: Development of salt-tolerant genotypes is central both to remediation of salinity-affected land and to meet increasing global food demand, which has been driving expansion of cropping into marginal areas. The bottleneck of any breeding programme is the lack of a reliable screening technique. This study tested the hypothesis that the ability of plants to retain K+ under saline conditions is central to their salt tolerance. Using seven barley cultivars contrasting in salt tolerance (CM72, Numar, ZUG293, ZUG95, Franklin, Gairdner, ZUG403), a comprehensive study was undertaken of whole-plant (growth rate, biomass, net CO2 assimilation, chlorophyll fluorescence, root and leaf elemental and water content) and cellular (net fluxes of H+, K+, Na+ and Ca2+) responses to various concentrations of NaCl (20–320 m m). Na+ selective microelectrodes were found to be unsuitable for screening purposes because of non-ideal selectivity of the commercially available Na+ LIX. At the same time, our results show very strong negative correlation between the magnitude of K+ efflux from the root and salt tolerance of a particular cultivar. K+ efflux from the mature root zone of intact 3-day-old seedlings following 40 min pretreatment with 80 m m NaCl was found to be a reliable screening indicator for salinity tolerance in barley. As a faster and more cost-effective alternative to microelectrode measurements, a procedure was developed enabling rapid screening of large numbers of seedlings, based on amount of K+ leaked from plant roots after exposure to NaCl.

Notes: Abstract 7075-T6 aluminium alloys panels were surface conditioned in a titanium colloid suspension, under a variety of different conditions, and subsequently these samples were immersed in a ZnO + H3PO4 coating mixture, and the phosphate coating layers characterized. Morphologies observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal that the coating layer consists of two phases, namely an amorphous phase, which is directly bonded to the substrate, and a crystalline phase, in which larger crystal grains grow on top of the amorphous base. Chemical compositions of the coating layers were analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by static and imaging secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). It is found that the details of the surface conditioning affect the final coating, both in terms of morphology and chemical composition. For example, larger amounts of Zn and P are detected in coatings for which the initial conditioning is done at 40°C, compared with room temperature; a similar statement can be made for surfaces which are water rinsed after the Ti pretreatment, compared with those which are not water rinsed prior to the coating treatment.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this note is to discuss problems associated with local buckling constraints in the context of topology optimization. It is shown that serious difficulties are encountered unless additional measures are introduced.

Notes: Absract Dense membrane preparation was attempted by electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole and polythiophene on stainless steel meshes. The effect of modifying experimental factors such as supporting electrolyte, electrochemical parameters and water addition were investigated. Compact polypyrrole deposits spreading over the meshes could be obtained, but preparative deposition of polythiophene on the same substrate was hindered by competitive anodic corrosion.

Notes: Summary A modification of a previously developed method for solving the static contact problem of a rigid, cylindrical punch indenting an isotropic cantilever beam is presented. The boundary conditions at the contact site are modified by including beam upper-surface rotation effects. Local contact stress distributions, as well as global beam displacements, are computed for various ratios of contact width to beam thickness and for various positions of the indenter. The results are compared to those of a previous study in which the rotation effects were not considered, to Hertz theory of contact stress, and to beam theory solutions. It is noted that the rotation effects became prominent as the contact width approached the thickness of the beam.

Notes: Summary Improvements to an established HPLC method are introduced. The modified method is more efficient for separation and detection of the toxins reponsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). The PSP toxin cotent of two strains ofAlexandrium tamarense and approximately forty shellfish samples collected from different locations in China have been analyzed with this HPLC method. Only one shellfish sample, collected from Lianyungang, China, contained PSP toxins.

Notes: Abstract The DCOC method developed recently by Zhou and Rozvany (1992, 1993) has been shown to highly improve the efficiency of optimality criteria methods. In the present paper, the application of this method to plates and shells is discussed. High efficiency of DCOC is guaranteed by the fact that the computational expense of DCOC is only influenced by the number of active displacement constraints, which is usually very small for the considered problem.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a systematic exploration of Michell layouts for various combinations of line supports is continued. The solutions discussed include those for reentrant corners, a line support and two free edges, line supports forming any convex polygon, supports consisting of two symmetric curves, and finally, rectangular domains bounded by one line support and three free edges.
