Notes: The Dirac equation in a spherically symmetric screened Coulomb potential is transformed to a modified Schrödinger equation of the form d2u/dr2+k2(r)u=0. This transformation is induced by expressing the Dirac function as a linear combination of the function u and its derivative du/dr. Various properties of the transformation and of the resulting equations are studied. The close similarity between the modified Schrödinger equation and the Schrödinger equation suggests that methods applied to the Schrödinger equation to derive nonrelativistic relations can be applied to the modified Schrödinger equation to derive the analogous relativistic relations. As an example, this approach is applied to the single channel quantum defect theory to give a new derivation of its relativistic form.

Notes: Measurements of the dynamic spall strength in aluminum, copper, and Metglas shocked by a high-power laser to hundreds of kilobars pressure are reported. The strain rates in these experiments are of the order of 107 s−1, which cannot be reached in impact experiments. The free-surface velocity behavior associated with spallation is characterized by oscillations caused by the reverberations of the spall layer. An optically recording velocity interferometer system was developed to measure the free-surface velocity time history. This diagnostic method has the advantages of being a noninterfering system and produces a highly accurate continuous measurement in time. The spall strength was calculated from the free-surface velocity as a function of the strain rate. The results show a rapid increase in the spall strength, suggesting that a critical phenomenon occurs at strain rates ∼107 s−1, expressed by the sudden approach to the theoretical value of the spall strength. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the remanent magnetization have been determined from far-field measurements for thallium ceramic samples. The current flow that gives rise to the observed magnetization is intragranular. The results are consistent with flux-creep-controlled transport with a distance between pinning centers of ∼- 1/2/μm. Using near-field measurements, the superconducting properties are found to be heterogeneous on a scale of ≫ 1 mm. Magnetic domains have been induced by pplying spatial variation in the applied field.
