Notizen: A simple dynamic finite element algorithm for analysing a propagating mixed mode crack tip is presented. A double noding technique, which can be easily incorporated into existing dynamic finite element codes, is used together with a corrected Ĵ integral to extract modes I and II dynamic stress intensity factors of a propagating crack. The utility of the procedure is demonstrated by analysing test problems involving a mode I central crack propagating in a plate subjected to uniaxial tension, a stationary slanted central crack in a plate subjected to uniaxial inpact loading and an extending slanted-edge crack in plate subjected to uniaxial tension.

Notizen: Abstract The dynamic fracture and crack-arrest responses of a modified compact-tension specimen (M-CT) machined from Homalite-100 and polycarbonate sheets were studied by dynamic photoelasticity, dynamic finite-element analysis and streaking photography. In contrast to some of the published results involving steel M-CT specimens, substantial dynamic effects were observed during rapid crack propagation in the Homalite-100 and polycarbonate M-CT specimens. The dynamic crack-arrest toughnesses.K 1a , were relatively constant and were about 80 percent and 50 percent of the corresponding fracture toughness,K 1c , of Homalite-100 and polycarbonate, respectively.

Notizen: Abstract Acoustic emissions (AE) detected by two transducers mounted on a reinforcing bar in a reinforced-concrete block, which is subjected to cyclic tension-compression loading, are used to assess the locations of re-bar debonding. Preliminary uniaxial-tension tests of the re-bar were conducted to establish the proper level of AE sensitivity which was then verified by uniaxial-tension tests of re-bar embedded in a concrete block. The main tests consist of simulated beamcolumn connection with a 90-deg hooked No. 8 Grade 60 rebar subjected to various cyclic-loading histories. Reasonably good correlations were established between the debonding regions indicated by the AE signals and those detached by dye injected into the cracked concrete.

Notizen: Abstract TheU y -displacement field obtained by white-light moiré interferometry were used to estimate the approximate far- and near-fieldJ-integral values associated with the subcritical crack growths in fatigue precracked 7075-T6 and blunt notched and fatigue precracked 2024-0 and 5052-H32 aluminum, single-edged notch (SEN) specimens. The initial phases of theJ-resistance curves for the somewhat brittle 7075-T6 and the two ductile 2024-0 and 5052-H32 aluminum SEN specimens are presented.

Notizen: Abstract The feasibility of using a previously developed crack-kinking criterion to predict crack arrest at a tear strap in a pressurized fuselage was studied with instrumented axial rupture tests of 21 models of an idealized fuselage. A rapidly propagating axial crack, which was initiated from a precrack, kinked immediately upon extension and propagated diagonally until it turned circumferentially and propagated along the tear straps. An elastodynamic finite element analysis of the rupturing model fuselage yielded the mixed-mode stress intensity factors,K I andK II , and the remote stress component, σ OX . This numerical procedure was also used to predict the crack trajectories in full-scale fuselage rupture tests. All numerical results agreed well with their measured counterparts regardless of size.

Notizen: Abstract Post's white-light moiré interferometry was used to obtain sequential records of the transientU y -displacement fields associated with stable crack growth in 7075-T6 and 2024-0, single-edge-notched (SEN) specimens with fatigued cracks. TheU y -displacement fields are used to evaluate the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD), far- and near-fieldJ-integral values, Dugdale-strip-yield model, William's polynomial function and the HRR field.

Notizen: Abstract The mixed mode, near-field state of stresses sourrounding a crack propagating at constant velocity is used to derive a relation between the dynamic stress-intensity factorsK I,K II, the remote stress component σ ox and the dynamic isochromatics. This relation, together with an over-deterministic least-square method, form the basis of a datareduction procedure for extracting dynamic,K I,K II and σ ox from the recorded dynamic photoelastic pattern surrounding a running crack. The overdeterministic least-square method is also used to fit static isochromatics to the numerically generated dynamic isochromatics. The resultant staticK I,K II and σ ox are compared with the corresponding dynamic values and estimats of errors involved in using static analysis to process dynamic isochromatic data are obtained. The data-reduction procedure is then used to evaluate the branching stress-intensity factor associated with crack branching and the mixed-mode stress-intensity factors associated with crack curving.

Notizen: Abstract Stable crack growth and fracture at the interface of undensified LI-900 reusable surface insulation (RSI) tile and the Nomex strain isolation pad (SIP) of the space-shuttle thermal-protection system (TPS) were modeled by double-edged notch-tension specimens. These specimens were loaded under uniaxial tension or 50-Hz cyclic loading and the resultant stable crack growth leading to eventual fracture was monitored by a videocamera. These tests showed that successive local tear-outs due to local tensile overload in the RSI tile resulted in the interfacial fracture where the cracktip opening angle, CTOA, of the SIP was related to initiation and intermittent stable crack propagation. Fractures in similar static and dynamic test specimens using densified LI-900 RSI tiles occurred in the undensified regions of the RSI tiles. These failures were consistent with the above failure mechanism based on the local tensile strength of the undensified LI-900 RSI tile. The intermittent stable crack growth of undensified LI-900 RSI tile was reproduced by a deterministic, two-dimensional finite-element model with SIP of variable elastic moduli.

Notizen: Abstract A comparative study on crack curving and branching criteria in dynamic fracture mechanics shows that the criteria based on “advanced cracking” concept correlated best with available experimental data. The crack branching criterion requires as a necessary condition, a critical dynamic stress intensity factor, K Ib, and a sufficient condition involving the crack curving criterion. The criteria are used to predict crack curving and crack branching in dynamic photoelastic experiments involving Homalite-100 and polycarbonate fracture specimens, as well as bursting steel and aluminum pipes.

Notizen: Abstract Dynamic fracture toughness versus crack velocity relations of Homalite-100, polycarbonate, hardened 4340 steel and reaction bonded silicon nitride are reviewed and discrepancies with published data and their probable causes are discussed. Data scatter in published data are attributed in part to the observed fluctuations in crack velocities. The results reaffirmed our previous conclusion that the dynamic fracture toughness versus crack velocity relation is specimen dependent and that the dynamic crack arrest stress intensity factor is not a unique material property.
