Notes: Wet thermal oxidation of AlAsSb was investigated. The oxidation kinetics was studied as a function of temperature and oxidation duration. An expression to allow accurate determination of the oxide depth for any temperature and time was established. Secondary ion mass spectrometry profiles and x-ray diffraction were used to demonstrate that an interfacial layer, composed of pure Sb and As and textured on InP, is formed during the oxidation process. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1 C60. Its singular structural, magnetic and electrical properties greatly enhanced the study of the AC60 phases (A = Rb, K and \chem{Cs}). We report our continuous wave (cw) ESR results on the structural phase transformations, phase instabilities and the related kinetics of K1C60. We quantitatively explain the origin of the difference between Rb1C60 and K1C60 phase diagrams. The stability of OP-Rb1C60 together with the narrowness of its homogenous cw-ESR linewidth in the temperature range \rangeunit{16}{100}{K} allow to perform pulsed ESR experiments. Pulsed ESR experiments measure precisely both the electronic spin-spin ( T_2 ) and spin-lattice ( T_1 ) relaxation times. Above \valunit{40}{K} , the equality of T_1 and T_2 , which are the only contributions to the cw-ESR linewidth, constitutes a convincing evidence of the metallic nature of OP-Rb1C60. The drastic increase (decrease) of the linewidth ( T_2 ) below \valunit{40}{K} is interpreted in terms of an \qut{electronic dimerization}.

Notes: Summary Five new cases are added to the single published instance of Yq to Xp translocation (Xt) in man. It is shown that the anomaly can occur as a mutational event during meiosis, and can be inherited from a parent, but also that it can arise in a 47,XXY embryo. In individuals with 46,XXt karyotype the gonadal development, sexual differentiation, gonadal function and fertility are within the range of normal females. They do not present overt or discrete sings of virilisation. However, somatic stigmata, and more specifically short stature, are present in all patients. There is no uniform pattern of Xt inactivation which varies from random to apparently preferential inactivation. This phenomenon may be important for the better understanding of X-inactivation which for the Xt the authors believe is random but followed by differential proliferation of the resulting two types of cells.

Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to assess the radiological findings after surgical removal of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNA). The postoperative CT and MRI scans of ten patients were reviewed. The cured group included six patients. The non-controlled group included six patients with eight recurrences. Two patients belonged to both groups as they were also followed and cured after surgery for relapse. Four recurrences were asymptomatic and diagnosed by imaging. The imaging patterns were matched to the patients clinical status and endoscopic findings. In the cured group, non-enhanced residual soft tissue masses were seen in all cases. In the non-controlled group, recurrence was always demonstrated on early postoperative CT or MR as a dramatically enhanced mass. The recurrence was located in the lateral or superior aspect of the nasopharynx (n = 3), deep to the fossa of Rosenmuller (n = 4) or out of the nasopharynx (n = 1). In two cases a remaining enhanced mass disappeared spontaneously on iterated examinations. Because of numerous asymptomatic relapses, a radiological workup is recommended four months after surgery, even in patients with normal endoscopy, to rule out posterolateral or extranasopharyngeal recurrences. Spontaneous evolution of residual masses must be appreciated on iterated imaging examinations.

Notes: Abstract. The occurrence of more than two small accessory chromosomes (SACs) in a single individual is extremely rare. Here, we characterize six SACs found in the cells of two different tissues of a moderately mentally retarded male. Microdissection combined with regular FISH demonstrates that the SACs are ring chromosomes derived from the centromeres of different chromosomes. The SACs are often associated with the centromeres of other chromosomes. Immunofluorescence with an anti-CENP-C antibody demonstrates that the SACs contain an active centromere. A possible mechanism by which the SACs originated and their clinical relevance are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. We report two cases of children with malignancies and subpleural nodules found on computed tomography (CT) scan. In both cases the diagnosis was anthracosis. This pathologic condition has never been reported in children. Causes of anthracosis include a smoking environment, living in urban areas and air pollution.

Notes: Abstract Germanate olivines Mg2GeO4, Ca2GeO4 and CaMgGeO4 have been studied by high-pressure X-ray Diffraction and high-pressure X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. The three compounds were compressed, in the 0–30 GPa pressure range, at room temperature in a diamond-anvil cell, silicon oil being used as the pressure transmitting medium. Values of K0 are 166 ± 15, 117 ± 15 and 152 ± 14 GPa for Mg2GeO4, Ca2GeO4 and CaMgGeO4 respectively. These olivines all exhibit compression anisotropy, the a axis being the least compressible. Crystal to crystal phase transitions have been observed in Mg2GeO4 and Ca2GeO4 above 12 GPa and 6 Gpa respectively. The nature of these structural changes remains unclear yet. The onset of amorphization has been observed in Mg2GeO4 and Ca2GeO4 at pressures above about 22 and 11 GPa respectively. These phase transitions and amorphization processes do not involve any detectable increase in the coordination number of germanium atoms. At higher pressure (P 〉23 GPa), we report the onset of a transition from a phase with fourfold coordinated germanium to a phase with higher germanium coordination number in CaMgGeO4.
