Notizen: The state-to-state integral cross sections for the inelastic scattering of CH(X 2Π) with He were measured in a newly constructed crossed molecular beam machine. Use of laser-induced fluorescence in an unconventional flux mode of detection provided single fine-structure state specific detection of the products. Two types of measurements were performed to further our understanding of the collision dynamics of open shell systems: (1) the product state distribution at a fixed and well-defined collision energy and (2) the dependence on collision energy of product state-resolved cross sections. A qualitative understanding of the collision dynamics can be obtained by properly factoring out features dependent on the fine-structure states, i.e., effects involving individual Λ-doublet states and features dependent on the rotational level alone, i.e., effects remaining after summing over all four fine-structure states associated with a given rotational quantum number. As for the fine-structure effects, a preferential population of product Λ-doublet states with reflection symmetry Π(A‘) was observed. The physical origin of this observed electronic orbital alignment can be attributed to a quantum interference phenomenon, as detailed in the accompanying paper. At the rotational level, the dominance of rotational rainbow scattering is unambiguously identified from both the existence of dynamical thresholds and a strong correlation between rotational level distributions at fixed translational energy and level specific excitation functions. These effects combined with other experimental observations lead us to visualize the CH+He scattering dynamics in a novel fashion. The collision can be regarded as a series of approximately independent sequential events each mediated by different regions of the interaction potential during the course of the whole encounter.

Notizen: The title reaction was studied in a new crossed molecular beam apparatus. Laser-induced-fluorescence was used to characterize both the reactant CH radical and the product CD radical in a state-resolved manner. Two types of dynamical information are reported here: (1) the excitation function for a specific reaction product state and (2) the product rotational state distribution at a well-defined collision energy.

Notizen: We have built an apparatus to study the viscoelastic response and measure the complex shear moduli of Langmuir monolayers as functions of the frequency and amplitude of the applied sinusoidal shear strain. A rotor is placed in contact with the monolayer and suspended by a torsion wire; a coil attached to the rotor carries a direct current. The voltage induced in this coil by a high-frequency external magnetic field is used to measure the angle of rotation with an accuracy of ∼0.005°. A low-frequency external magnetic field is used to drive the rotor into forced oscillations at the desired frequency (1 mHz–1 Hz), or the rotor may oscillate freely with the "natural" frequency variable over the range 0.01–3 Hz using a static external magnetic field. The apparatus has a large dynamic range for shear modulus measurement (∼5×10−3–103 dyn/cm), achieved by using the free oscillation (ring-down) method for films with low shear moduli (∼5×10−3–1 dyn/cm), and the forced oscillation method for films with higher shear moduli (∼1–103 dyn/cm). We have found that the complex shear modulus G of heneicosanoic acid Langmuir monolayers depends on the applied strain except at very low amplitudes. We also present sample data showing the frequency dependence of G. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A study of the temporal response of a biased Fabry–Perot etalon with a nematic liquid crystal exposed to short (∼10 μs) voltage pulses is presented. It is found that the finesse is the crucial factor determining the achievable switching time. For a given maximum transmission the reflectivities of the Fabry–Perot mirrors are optimized to achieve minimum switching times. In particular, switching times of 0.5 μs with an initial transmission of 3% and a maximum value of 70% have been obtained. The experimental results are in good agreement with theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A study of the temporal response of a biased planar nematic liquid crystal to short (∼10 μs) voltage pulses is presented. The resulting optical phase shift varies quadratically with time during the first 2 μs after switching the voltage on and then linearly. A theoretical model is developped starting from the Leslie-Ericksen theory which describes the investigated phase modulation in the microsecond time scale. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: UV lasing was obtained with helical copper hollow cathodes. The output powers have been measured multiline (248–270 nm) for some helix geometries as a function of different discharge currents, Ne pressures, and mirror reflectivities. A maximum laser power of 580 mW has been obtained in a segmented discharge tube with a total active length of 1.2 m. Laser action was also observed at 780 nm with a power of 1.3 W. The discharge stability is superior to other arrangements.

Notizen: Summary. A randomized trial was arranged in Yorkshire to assess whether progestogens would improve survival as part of the primary treatment of endometrial carcinoma, in conjunction with surgery and radiotherapy. A total of 429 patients was randomized on diagnosis to the progestogen or control group and treated locally according to an agreed protocol. All the patients are now more than 1 year after operation and over half are more than 5 years after operation. The projected overall 5-year survival rate is 76% but contrary to expectation there is no statistically significant difference in survival between the patients treated with progestogens and the control group even after statistical adjustment for known prognostic factors.
