Notes: Phase formation in rapid thermally annealed Pd/Ge contacts on In0.53Ga0.47As has been investigated by means of cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, convergent-beam electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Solid-phase regrowth is observed to occur similarly as in Pd/Ge contacts on GaAs or InP. The reaction starts at low temperatures with the formation of an amorphous Pd–In–Ga–As layer, which crystallizes at elevated temperatures yielding hexagonal Pd4In0.53Ga0.47As being first described in this work. At temperatures (approximately-greater-than)250 °C, this phase decomposes due to epitaxial solid-phase regrowth of In0.53Ga0.47As and formation of Pd–Ge phases. The stable composition is reached at temperatures (approximately-greater-than)350 °C with excess Ge diffused through top Pd–Ge to the contact interface and growing epitaxially on the semiconductor. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A homogeneous melting eutectic Au/Sn solder bump for flip-chip application has been developed. The underbump metallization consists of a WSi0.4N0.2-layer and a Ni-wetting layer. The solder is deposited as a sequence of alternating Au and Sn layers. The bump can be exposed to multiple fluxless reflow cycles. The reflow of the solder as deposited starts with a phase forming process in the solid state which results in an eutecticlike phase and the near eutectic δ and ζ phases. The δ and ζ phases dissolve during the liquid state stage of the reflow at temperatures between 300 and 350 °C. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of (NH4)2Sx treatment of the facet of InGaAs/AlGaAs ridge waveguide (RW) laser diodes on the nonradiative current and catastrophic optical damage (COD) level is reported. Using the power–voltage–current (P–V–I) characteristics of the electroluminescence at low injection levels, changes in the density of surface states at the laser facets are described. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The Spring Meetings of the German Physical Society have long been an essential forum for physicists in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These conferences, held at different universities, provide a lively and unique atmosphere for young researchers, in particular, in which to present their most recent results to a broad audience, establish new contacts and discuss future projects. This special issue of Applied Physics B – Lasers and Optics – features selected papers presented at the 1997 Spring Meeting of the Quantum Optics Section, held at the University of Mainz. Clearly, a selection of articles cannot provide exhaustive coverage of the scientific program of a conference. Nevertheless, the reader will hopefully get an impression of the broad range of the discussed topics, maybe even of the international spirit. The board of editors of the journal as well as the guest editors have planned this special issue as the beginning of a trend to highlight top-quality modern research presented at future meetings of the Quantum Optics Section by publication in Applied Physics B – Lasers and Optics.

Description / Table of Contents: For column chromatography of dissolved materials silica gel preparations with systematically changed space structure are used. Differences of space structure are characterised by a distinctive parameter of space structure, the specific pore volume.Separations are described which are no longer effected by differentiated chemical reactions of the dissolved materials with the silica gel surface, but only by a differentiated distribution of the larger and smaller particles of the dissolved materials between the mobile phase of the solvent and the quasi-stationary phase of this solvent within the wide pores of the silica gel granules.Separations were made of the following material systems:Thorium oxide sol/Cl ions (using water as solvent), styrene/polystyrene (using benzene or chloroform as solvent), paraffin/polystyrene (using chloroform as solvent). Polystyrene as a mixture of polymeric homologues of the mean molecular weight 38,000 or 250,000 is fractionated. In the successive fractions the mean molecular weight decreases.
