Notes: Abstract. Two cases of rare lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC) of the pancreas are presented. Although the histogenesis of this lesion is not known, it can be histologically differentiated from other pancreatic and retropancreatic cysts. The importance of its recognition is in the distinction from cystic neoplasm of the pancreas.

Notes: Abstract. We report a case of fetus-in-fetu located in the scrotal sac of a newborn male infant. Plain radiography (including specimen radiography), ultrasonography and MRI clearly demonstrated vertebral column, ribs, skull, pelvic bones, femurs and a portion of tibiae and humeri. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination.

Notes: We have investigated the effect of cooling rate, followed immediately after the isothermal annealing, on the magnetic properties of melt-spun Fe88Zr7B4Cu1 alloy. As the cooling rate is increased, the effective permeability, 2×104, improved by 50% on annealing at around 650 °C. The remanence ratio is also found to concomitantly decrease with the increasing cooling rate. The increase of permeability and decrease of remanence ratio are consistent with the expected suppression of the induced magnetic anisotropy. From an analysis of the transmission electron microscopy micrographs, and the x-ray diffraction spectral intensities, we find that the volume fraction of the amorphous matrix to that of the nanocrystallized magnetic entities to be about 20%, at which the permeability has the maximum value for this system. Scanning electron microscopy and antiferromagnetic investigations show a much smoother surface morphology with a finer grain distribution in the rapidly quenched sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We compared the dose–response relationship and the neuromuscular blocking effects of mivacurium during infusions of esmolol in 40 anaesthetised rabbits. Train-of-four stimuli were applied every 10 s to the common peroneal nerve and the force of contraction of the tibialis anterior muscle was measured. Plasma cholinesterase activity decreased by 13% after esmolol infusion. The ED95 of mivacurium increased significantly from 29 (4.8) μgkg−1 with placebo to 61 (9.8) μgkg−1 during esmolol 100 μgkg−1.min−1, 49 (8.2) μgkg−1 during esmolol 300 μgkg−1.min−1 and 54 (7.3) μgkg−1 during esmolol 500 μgkg−1.min−1, respectively (p 〈 0.001). The duration of neuromuscular block with mivacurium 0.16 mgkg−1 was prolonged by 30% with esmolol due to diminished plasma cholinesterase activity (p 〈 0.05). Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure decreased by 15% with esmolol (p 〈 0.05). The results of this study show that, in rabbits, esmolol decreased plasma cholinesterase activity, antagonised the neuromuscular blocking potency of mivacurium and prolonged its neuromuscular blocking effect.

Notes: Abstract. Objectives and Design: Effects of eosinophil proteins on airway goblet cell mucin release were investigated using primary hamster tracheal surface epithelial (HTSE) cell cultures.¶Materials and Methods: HTSE cells were metabolically labeled using 3H-glucosamine and chased in the presence of varying concentrations of eosinophil proteins. The amount of 3H-mucin in the spent media was measured by Sepharose CL-4B gel-filtration column chromatography. Possible cytotoxicity by the eosinophil proteins was assessed by measurements of both lactic dehydrogenase and mucin release during as well as after the treatment period.¶Results: (1) Neither eosinophil cationic protein nor eosinophil-derived neurotoxin affected mucin release at concentrations up to 10-6M; (2) both major basic protein (MBP) and eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) inhibited mucin release in a dose-dependent fashion, and the inhibitory effect by these proteins appeared to be reversible; (3) neither MBP nor EPO caused any apparent cytotoxicity at concentrations up to 10-6M.¶Conclusion: Eosinophil proteins such as MBP and EPO inhibit mucin release from primary HTSE cells without causing any apparent cytotoxicity.

Notes: Abstract Background: The purpose of the present study was to describe the various imaging features of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the liver, a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin. Methods: Sonography (n= 5), computed tomography (CT; n= 5), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (n= 2), and hepatic arteriography (n= 3) in five patients who underwent partial hepatectomy for tumor resection were retrospectively reviewed and correlated with pathologic findings. Results: All tumors were clearly demarcated from surrounding hepatic parenchyma in sectional imaging with (n= 2) or without (n= 3) a fibrous capsule, which was pathologically verified. Internal architecture of abundant fibrosis, myxoid degeneration, and/or hemorrhagic necrosis reflected the sonographic, CT and MR imaging findings. Marginal tumor staining without definite tumor vasculature was the main feature of hepatic arteriography. There was no intratumoral calcification. All three tumors involving the right lobe of the liver invaded the right hemidiaphragm. Conclusion: Although there were no unique findings of primary hepatic MFH, a combined interpretation of various imaging modalities may elucidate the malignant nature of the tumor.

Notes: Abstract. A 26-year-old woman presented with epigastric pain, vomiting, and a palpable mass in the right lower abdomen. Ultrasonography showed a high echogenic mass associated with a small amount of ascites in the right lower abdomen. Computed tomography demonstrated entrapped ileal loops within a thin-walled fibrous capsule. A thin fibrous sac encasing the terminal ileum was detected on laparotomy and confirmed as idiopathic sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis. RID=""ID=""〈e5〉Correspondence to:〈/e5〉 M. Y. Kim

Notes: Abstract Background: To verify characteristic features of hepatic dysplastic nodules at different imaging modalities. Methods: Twenty-eight patients with 37 dysplastic nodules of the liver (0.8–3.0 cm) underwent sonography (28 patients), computed tomography (CT; 24 patients), magnetic resonance (MR; 11 patients), and angiography (12 patients). Each nodule was analyzed for echogenicity, attenuation, signal intensity, and vascularity. Results: Echogenicity of nodules was high in 16 (43%), homogeneous in two (6%), and low in 19 (51%) of 37 nodules. Attenuation of nodules was high in one (7%), homogeneous in four (26%), and low in 10 (67%) of 15 nodules on the arterial-phase CT images; homogeneous in five (33%) and low in 10 (67%) of 15 nodules on the portal-phase CT images; and high in four (17%), homogeneous in six (26%), and low in 13 (57%) of 23 nodules on the delayed-phase CT images. Signal intensity of nodules was high in 15 (94%) and homogeneous in one (6%) of 16 nodules on T1-weighted MR images and was homogeneous in seven (44%) and low in nine (56%) of 16 nodules on T2-weighted MR images. Vascularity of nodules was avascular in 14 (88%) and slightly vascular in two (12%) of 16 nodules. Conclusions: Hepatic dysplastic nodules show diverse imaging characteristics with different imaging techniques; however, common imaging findings of hepatic dysplastic nodules are low echo, low attenuation, and high, low, or homogeneous intensity on T1- and T2-weighted MR, and avascularity.
