Notizen: Rotating magnetic islands produce fluctuations on a variety of diagnostics in magnetic fusion energy plasmas. The analysis of these fluctuations requires the calculation of the amplitude, phase, and frequency of the oscillations. These three spectral quantities generally evolve in time, necessitating nonstationary signal analysis techniques. The Hilbert transform offers an efficient and accurate method of calculating these three quantities from one diagnostic signal. This feature allows the Hilbert transform to determine the success of the active rotation control of magnetic islands, and to calculate the profile of the diagnostic measurements in a frame of reference co-rotating with the magnetic island. Comparisons to quadrature and spectrogram techniques demonstrate the accuracy of the Hilbert transform method. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The High Beta Tokamak-Extended Pulse (HBT-EP) experiment [J. Fusion Energy 12, 303 (1993)] combines an internal, movable conducting wall with a high-power, modular saddle coil system to provide passive and active control of long wavelength magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. Systematic adjustment of the radial position, b, of the conducting wall elements in relation to the surface of the plasma (minor radius a) resulted in the suppression of β-limiting disruptions for discharges in which b/a〈1.2 and a positive plasma current ramp was maintained. Conducting wall stabilization of kink instabilities was observed in discharges with strong current ramps and in plasmas with β values near the Troyon stability boundary. The frequency of slowly growing modes that persisted in wall-stabilized discharges was controlled by applying oscillating m=2, n=1 resonant magnetic perturbations. A compact, single-phase saddle coil system permitted modulation of the rotation velocity of internal m/n=2/1 instabilities by a factor of 2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Closed and open loop control techniques were applied to growing m/n=2/1 rotating islands in wall-stabilized plasmas in the High Beta Tokamak-Extended Pulse (HBT-EP) [J. Fusion Energy 12, 303 (1993)]. HBT-EP combines an adjustable, segmented conducting wall (which slows the growth or stabilizes ideal external kinks) with a number of small (6° wide toroidally) driven saddle coils located between the gaps of the conducting wall. Two-phase driven magnetic island rotation control from 5 to 15 kHz has been demonstrated powered by two 10 MW linear amplifiers. The phase instability has been observed and is well modeled by the single-helicity predictions of nonlinear Rutherford island dynamics for 2/1 tearing modes including important effects of ion inertia and finite Larmor radius, which appear as a damping term in the model equations. The closed loop response of active feedback control of the 2/1 mode at moderate gain was observed to be in good agreement with the theory. Suppression of the 2/1 island growth has been demonstrated using an asynchronous frequency modulation drive which maintains the inertial flow damping of the island by application of rotating control fields with frequencies alternating above and below the natural mode frequency. This frequency modulation control technique was also able to prevent disruptions normally observed to follow giant sawtooth crashes in the plasma core. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In a two-stage community study of 3069 Chinese schoolboys in Hong Kong, those entering stage 2 were classified by scores on Rutter's teacher and parent questionnaires into: (1) a mixed hyperactive/conduct-disturbed (HA-CD) group; (2) a pure hyperactive (HA) group; (3) a pure conduct-disturbed (CD) group; and (4) a normal control group. The four groups of children were compared on a series of psychosocial, cognitive and neurodevelopmental measures. This was followed by a regression analysis to examine the specificity of the differential patterns of associations between HA and CD. There was a mix of negative and positive findings defying a simple, definitive conclusion. However, the positive findings that did emerge supported a growing body of recent literature which favoured a separation of HA from CD and their cross-cultural validity: the former was associated with neurodevelopmental impairments, the latter with family disharmony. The mixed condition, HA–CD, was a hybrid of its two constituent conditions, displaying the attributes of both.

Notizen: Abnormal psychosocial factors, assessed both clinically and by raters blind to clinical presentation, were examined in 21 hyperkinetic and 26 conduct disordered children. Blind raters found the frequency of psychosocial adversities to be similar in the two disorders. By contrast the clinical rater, who did know the diagnosis of patients, rated adverse psychosocial situations as much lower in hyperkinetic children than in children with conduct disorder. Logistic regression showed, particularly in the category of abnormal intrafamilial relationships (Lack of warmth in parent child relationship, Hostility or scapegoating of the child, Intrafamilial discord among adults), effects of the interaction between rater and knowledge of diagnosis. Clinical raters should be aware of abnormal psychosocial situations in hyperkinetic children and assess possible adverse effects on parents and children. Researchers should be aware of a possible bias in research interviews.

Notizen: Aims: To assess patient receipt of written information. To ensure patients understand the written information about a resuscitation policy and to determine whether they disapproved of or had concerns about the policy. Methods: All admissions to four wards of the hospital were approached for an interview. A set questionnaire was asked by one of 2 interviewers. Results: 72% of 572 admissions were interviewed. Refusal accounted for only 2 of the people not interviewed. 11% were unable to advocate for themselves by reason of mental incompetence, inability to communicate or impairment secondary to their illness.Of the 401 interviewed only 49% recalled receiving the patient information booklet. Few patients (17%) recalled reading the information in the patient information booklet. They were all then given the paragraph about the hospital’s resuscitation policy. 352 were asked their understanding and only 61% demonstrated that they understood the paragraph. 91% of all 401 patients approved of the hospital having the option of DNR orders. 31% of people however had concerns related to DNR orders. These are discussed. Conclusions: Many acutely unwell patients are unable to advocate for themselves. Written information is a poor method of communicating with patients. There was limited receipt of the information and many misunderstood the paragraph about the hospitals resuscitation policy. There was a wide range of patient thoughts and concerns expressed.

Notizen: Abstract Haemolymph samples were withdrawn from routinely active male intermoult Glyptonotus held at 0 ± 0.5°C, and analysed for blood-gas and acid-base variables. In both the arterialised (a) and venous (v) haemolymph, over 50% of the oxygen was transported as dissolved oxygen at PaO2 and PvO2 levels of 12.0 ± 1.15 and 7.70 ± 1.89 kPa, respectively. The maximum oxygen-carrying capacity of the haemocyanin (CmaxHcO2) was relatively low at 0.19 ± 0.05 mmol l−1, accompanied by relatively low protein and [Cu2+] levels indicating low circulating haemocyanin concentrations. Arterialised haemolymph had a mean pH of 7.88 ± 0.02(6) at a PCO2 of 0.12 ± 0.01(6) kPa and a bicarbonate level of 12.95 ± 0.80(6) mequiv l−1 with small differences in PCO2 and pH between arterial and venous haemolymph. The non-bicarbonate buffering capacity of Glyptonotus haemolymph was low at −2.0 mequiv l−1 HCO3 − pH unit−1. Haemolymph [l-lactate] and [d-glucose] levels were similar at 〈 1 mmol l−1 in animals held in the laboratory and those sampled in Antarctica. The blood-gas and acid-base status of Glyptonotus haemolymph may be a reflection of the low and stable temperatures experienced by this Antarctic crustacean.

Notizen: Abstract  We investigated the blockade of the positive inotropic effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) by SB 203 186 (piperidinoethyl-indole-3-carboxylate hydrochloride) and its affinity for 5-HT4 receptors of human right atrium and piglet left atrium. We also compared the blocking effects of SB 203 186 against 5-HT-evoked tachycardia in anaesthetised adult Yucatan minipigs as well as new-born Camborough piglets. SB 203 186 caused competitive antagonism of the positive inotropic effects of 5-HT in electrically paced atrial preparations of man (pK B=8.9) and piglet (pK B=8.5) at concentrations (up to 0.3 μmol/l) which were devoid of depressant or stimulant effects. The affinity of SB 203 186 for atrial 5-HT4 receptors was 30–160 times higher than that of tropisetron. 5-HT caused tachycardia with similar potency and efficacy in Yucatan minipigs and new-born Camborough piglets. SB 203 186 (0.1–3 mg/kg, i.v.) surmountably antagonised 5-HT-evoked tachycardia in anaesthetised Yucatan minipigs or new-born Camborough piglets with similar potency. The blocking potency of SB 203 186 in Yucatan minipigs was 17 times higher than that of tropisetron. Intraduodenally administered SB 203 186 (0.3–3 mg/kg) to new-born Camborough piglets produced blockade of 5-HT-evoked tachycardia which was maximal after 20 min and lasted for more than 3 h with 0.3 mg/kg. The antagonism produced by the SB 203 186 administration in new-born Camborough piglets was dose-related and threefold greater through the intravenous route than through the intraduodenal route. We conclude that SB 203 186 is an antagonist with nanomolar affinity for both human and porcine atrial 5-HT4 receptor. The in vivo results demonstrate that the sinoatrial 5-HT4 receptors function is similar in new-born Camborough piglets and adult Yucatan minipigs. Both porcine breeds are valid models for human atrial 5-HT4 receptors as demonstrated with the antagonist SB 203 186.
