Notes: The spin–spin time correlation function of the spin-boson model is studied using a maximum entropy imaging procedure founded on knowledge of early time derivatives or moments of the corresponding spectral density. The coherent–incoherent boundary is reproduced in agreement with the results of dynamical path-integral Monte Carlo and the procedure is shown to be stable numerically at both long time and low temperature. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nonequilibrium electron and hole carrier dynamics are calculated for femtosecond photoexcitation in Ge using an ensemble Monte Carlo method. From the carrier distributions and k⋅p band-structure calculations, the time-dependent differential optical transmission that corresponds to pump-probe experiments is determined. It is found that electrons quickly scatter out of the optically coupled region and that the primary electron relaxation channel is from the Γ valley to the X valleys, then to the L valleys. Holes dominate the nonlinear absorption spectra in Ge. It is also found that light holes make a substantial contribution to the initial transient of the differential transmission, particularly for high-energy photoexcitation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  The asplenia [Ivemark] syndrome (AS) is the association of congenital absence of the spleen with a variety of visceral abnormalities, predominantly of the cardiovascular system. Varying degrees of malrotation and malfixation of the bowel are common in this condition, and the occurrence of catastrophic gastric volvulus due to malfixation of the bowel has been reported. With the improvement in long-term outlook for these patients with modern cardiac surgery and prophylactic antibiotics, the intra-abdominal anomalies have become increasingly significant. This paper draws attention to the prophylactic treatment of gastric malfixation in the AS through the presentation of two cases in which gastropexy was performed.

Notes: Abstract. Normative bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) values for the total body (TB), proximal femur (PF), and antero-posterior lumbar spine (LS) were obtained from a large cross-sectional sample of children and adolescents who were 8–17 years of age. There were 977 scans for the TB, 892 for the PF, and 666 for the LS; bone mineral values were obtained using a HOLOGIC QDR 2000 in array mode. Data are presented for the subregions of the PF (femoral neck, trochanter, intertrochanter, and the total region) and for the LS (L1–L4 and L3). Female and male values for the FN, LS (L1–L4), and the TB were compared across age groups using a two-way ANOVA. In addition, we compared the 17-year-old female values to a separate sample of young adult women (age 21). At all these sites, BMC and BMD increased significantly with age. There was no gender difference in TB BMC until age 14 or in TB BMD until age 16, when male values were significantly greater. Females had significantly greater LS BMC at ages 12 and 13, but by age 17 the male values were significantly greater. Females had significantly greater LS BMD across all age groups, however. Males had significantly greater FN BMC and BMD across all age groups. There were no significant differences in BMC or BMD at any sites between the 17- and 21-year-old women.

Notes: Abstract We compared areal bone mineral density (BMD) of the total body (TBMD), antero-posterior lumbar spine at L3 (APS), lateral spine at L3 (LS) and femoral neck (FN). In order to understand better the effect of gender-related size differences on BMD, we also compared the estimated volumetric BMD at L3 (VLS) and the femoral neck (VFN). Subjects were asymptomatic women (n=22) and men (n=44) with an age range of 58–79 years. BMD at each site was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry using a Hologic 2000 in array mode. Results of the statistical analyses (ANOVA) showed the men to have significantly greater BMD at all areal sites [APS, LS (p〈0.05); FN (p〈0.01); TBMD (p〈0.001)]. The two estimated volumetric comparisons, however, showed no gender differences. Results demonstrate how measures from areal BMD measures can be misleading when comparing groups of different size. In older men and women planar measures may overestimate gender differences in BMD.

Notes: Abstract The pollen grain surface morphology of two Red Delicious apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) sports, Aversang and Ultrared, and two Gala apple sports, Galalea and Splenola, were examined using scanning electron microscopy for genotype differentiation. Quantitative data on pollen dimensions, ridge patterns, and pore dimensions were extracted from micrographs using image analysis. Data were examined with analysis of variance, canonical variate analysis, and discriminant analysis in order to differentiate genotypes. The combination of image analysis to extract quantitative data and multivariate analysis was successful in differentiating apple sports with exine pore and pollen grain measurements.
