Notes: Abstract.  New diode lasers delivering 50 mW output power at 1083 nm are shown to be efficient sources for optical pumping of helium. They can polarize nuclei in a 3He gas up to M=50% over the pressure range 0.4–1.6 torr. Larger nuclear polarizations M of 3He nuclei, of order 80%, can be obtained in 3He–4He mixtures when the laser frequency is tuned to a 4He line. A standard optical measurement of nuclear polarization M has been extended to the case of 3He–4He mixtures. The effect of various parameters on the steady-state polarization M and on the pumping time T p is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Wetting properties of liquid helium on rubidium metal have been investigated in the temperature range 1.0–1.7 K using a heat conduction method. The rubidium surface is found to be wetted under saturated vapor conditions. Prewetting transitions have been observed for rather weak offsets from saturation, indicating that rubidium is close to the nonwetting limit at T = 0 K. Presumably because of substrate inhomogeneities, the prewetting transitions are experimentally found to be continuous and hysteretic. No evidence for the prewetting critical point has been found up to 1.7 K. The prewetting line verifies a simple linear relation between the liquid-vapour surface tension and the two third power of the chemical potential offset, but does not conform quantitatively to the simple model currently used.
