    Notes: Abstract Objective: To investigate the effect of grapefruit juice (GJ) on the pharmacokinetics of orally administered verapamil in hypertensive patients. Methods: Ten hypertensive patients on chronic verapamil treatment participated in a two-day study. On day 1 200 ml of water was given 1 hour before, and together with the morning verapamil dose; on the day 2, water was replaced by GJ in the same order. Serial blood samples were collected and the concentrations of verapamil and its main dealkylated metabolite (D-617) were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The area under the concentration versus time curve of verapamil (AUCv) and its metabolite D-617 (AUCM) were calculated before and after GJ ingestion. The peak serum concentration (Cmax) and the time until its appearance (tmax) were also determined. Results: GJ did not affect Cmax, tmax, AUCv or AUVm. The AUCv/AUCm ratio (AUCR) was slightly, but significantly, increased after GJ (1.67 vs 1.92). Conclusions: A single administration of GJ with short-acting verapamil has no significant effect on the pharmacokinetics, of verapamil.

    Notes: Electro-optical modulation due to intersubband transitions in a coupled quantum well structure is experimentally studied. By using an appropriate set of cross/parallel polarizer-analyzer measurements, we were able to resolve the contribution of electroabsorption and electroretardation to the overall modulation of the infrared light. Fitting the experimental results to a simple model that allows the quantum properties of the structure to vary with the applied electric field revealed that the most significant contribution to the modulation comes from linewidth broadening of the optical transition. We attribute this effect to a larger degree of localization of the envelope states near the interfaces that give rise to a faster dephasing time due to elastic scattering. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Thiamine-responsive megaloblastic anemia (TRMA, also known as Rogers syndrome, OMIM 249270) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a triad of megaloblastic anemia, diabetes mellitus, and sensorineural deafness. Patients respond, to varying degrees, to treatment with megadoses of thiamine. We have recently shown genetic linkage of the TRMA gene to a 16-centimorgan (cM) region on 1q23.2–1q23.3 based on the analysis of four large, inbred families of Alaskan, Italian, and Israeli-Arab origin. Here we narrow the TRMA interval down to 4 cM based on genetic recombination, homozygosity mapping, and linkage disequilibrium (highest LOD score of 12.5 at D1S2799, at a recombination fraction of 0). We provide further evidence that the TRMA gene is located in this region and confirm the homogeneity of the disease. In this analysis, we genotyped seven additional families of diverse ethnic origin (Pakistani, Indian, Italian, Brazilian, and Japanese), and analyzed additional markers in two previously reported families showing evidence of linkage disequilibrium in a large area of their haplotypes. The multi-system manifestations of TRMA suggest that thiamine has a pivotal role in a multiplicity of physiological processes. Mapping the TRMA gene and understanding the molecular basis of the disease might, thus, shed light on the role of thiamine in common disorders such as deafness, anemia, and diabetes.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes the results and conclusions of research directed towards the development and evaluation of a chemical sensor which would provide information on the quality of indoor environments surrounding cultural objects. In our case these objects were paintings housed in major European galleries and the main objective is their preservation through an improved understanding of their microenvironment. The concept was to prepare and expose test tempera paintings which would behave as dosimeters and integrate the environmental response at these locations. Artificial ageing of similar samples was performed to provide a means of calibrating the test paintings. Samples from the test paintings were compared with artificially aged samples and this enabled the sites to be ranked in terms of their suitability for exposure of cultural objects. Additionally, novel methodology involving piezoelectric sensors was designed for monitoring the relative humidity and temperature of the microenvironment of paintings. Dielectric techniques were also used for measuring the effect of relative humidity fluctuations on artists' materials and novel non-invasive dielectric techniques in the microwave region were used for the determination of their moisture content.

    Notes: Abstract Mechanical alloying is a versatile technique for the solid state synthesis of many materials, including alloys such as iron-copper where the elements are immiscible under equilibrium conditions. The structural and magnetic state of these alloys, and their thermal stability, have been investigated by means of thermomagnetometry, DSC, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Comparison of the thermomagnetometry curves for the various alloys together with analysis of intermediate reaction products enabled the individual thermal processes to be identified. The Curie temperature of the alloys was measured, and it was found that on heating the metastable alloys underwent phase segregation between 300-400°C.

    Notes: Abstract Given a bandlimited signal, we consider the sampling of the signal and some of its derivatives in a periodic manner. The mathematical concept of frames is utilized in the analysis of the properties of the sequence of sampling functions. The frame operator of this sequence is expressed as a matrix-valued function multiplying a vector-valued function. An important property of this matrix is that the maximum and minimum eigenvalues are equal (in some sense) to the upper and lower frame bounds. We present a method for finding the dual frame and, thereby, a method for reconstructing the signal from its samples. Using the matrix approach we prove that the sequence of sampling functions is always complete in the cases of critical sampling and oversampling. A sufficient condition for the sequence of sampling functions to constitute a frame is derived. We show that if no sampling of the signal itself is involved, the sampling is not stable and cannot be stabilized by oversampling. Examples are considered, and the frame bounds in the case of sampling of the signal and its first derivative are calculated explicitly. Finally, the matrix approach can be similarly applied to other problems of signal representation.

    Notes: Reactions of the hydroxyl radical with several linear hydrocarbon species occurring in combustion chemistry have been considered at temperatures near 1100 K and 1 atmosphere in shock tube experiments. The OH density was monitored using 310 nm UV absorption of the A2Σ+ (SINGLEBOND) X 2Π transition. Rate coefficients for the reaction of OH with ethane (8.37 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s- 1; 970 K), hexane (2.18 × 10-11; 962 K), heptane (3.34 × 10-11, 1186 K), octane (4.42 × 10-11; 1078 K), nonane (4.55 × 10-11; 1097 K), and decane (5.64 × 10-11; 1109 K) have been determined. These values are compared with previous experimental results and transition state theory calculations. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
