    Notes: Abstract Renal-transplanted children may present stunted growth, negative nitrogen balance (Nb), and alterations in body composition. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) is a potent anabolic agent which improves nutritional status and Nb. In renal-transplanted children, rhGH increases growth velocity but its effect on nutritional status has not been reported. We evaluated the effect of 6 months of rhGH treatment on Nb, urea nitrogen appearance (UNA), anthropometric indexes, and growth velocity in 14 pediatric patients with a renal transplant. Nb improved significantly (P = 0.02) and was accompanied by a decrease of UNA. A significant improvement was observed also in mid-arm muscle circumference (P = 0.002), arm muscle are (P = 0.001), and arm fat are (P = 0.017). Growth velocity increased in prepubertal patients (P = 0.003). Creatinine clearance and the number of rejection episodes were not affected by rhGH treatment. In conclusion, short-term administration of rhGH improves Nb and UNA as well as the main indexes of body composition.

    Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Die Dynamik einer vollständig digitalen Regelung ist eng verbunden mit der Dauer des Abtast-Intervalles. Die Mindestdeuer der Periode hängt ausschließlich von der erforderlichen Rechenzeit ab. Deswegen ist die Minimierung der Rechenzeit eines der wichtigsten Ziele für die Genauigkeit elektrischer Antriebe mit vollständig digitaler Regelung. Die besten Ergebnisse können mit schnellen Programmiersprachen und kurzen Befehlssätzen erlangt werden. Das Ziel wird erreicht durch einen geeigneten Algorithmus für Asynchronmotoren. Dieser Algorithmus wird “direkt” genannt, weil er das elektromagnetische Moment und den magnetischen Fluss direkt mit den Eingangsspannungen verbindet.
    Notes: Contents The dynamic behaviour of fully digital control systems is strictly related to the duration of the sampling interval. The minimum length of this period depends exclusively on the time needed for the execution of all the required operations. Therefore, the minimization of computing time is one of the most important goals to be achieved in order to improve the accuracy of electrical drives with fully digitalized control systems. The best results can be obtained using fast programming languages and short sets of computing instructions. This goal is achieved using a proper feeding algorithm for asynchronous motor drives called “direct”, because it links directly the requested torque and magnetic flux to the input voltages.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommario Un uomo di 65 anni affetto da mieloma multiplo IgG lambda ha sviluppato una forma severa di polineuropatia con prevalente coinvolgimento della sensibilità termo-dolorifica e del sistema autonomico. Sebbene la presentazione clinica suggerisse una neuropatia da amiloidosi, la biopsia del nervo ha messo in evidenza le caratteristiche immunoistochimiche ed ultrastrutturali della malattia da depositi di catene leggere (LCDD). Vengono riportate, per la prima volta, le caratteristiche morfologiche e cliniche della neuropatia da depositi di catene leggere.
    Notes: Abstract A 65-year-old man with IgG lambda multiple myeloma developed severe polyneuropathy with prominent thermal-pain sensory impairment and autonomic failure. Although the clinical presentation suggested amyloid neuropathy, nerve biopsy showed the immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features typical of light chain deposition disease (LCDD). A precise morphologic and clinical description of LCDD neuropathy is given for the first time in the present report.
