    Notes: To investigate the transport properties of resonant tunneling diodes with dimensions in the submicron range, small area mesa diodes with surrounding Schottky gates have been processed. The gate turns out to provide excellent current control, which makes a resonant tunneling transistor operation mode feasible for our devices. In the single electron regime very distinct staircase-like features are observed in the current voltage characteristics. An accurate analysis of this staircase characteristic by means of magnetotransport measurements shows that tunneling through defect states can be ruled out as a reason for these current steps. Moreover, we show that the current steps are exclusively due to quantization effects of the gate potential. At high magnetic fields a saturation-like behavior of the step onset voltages occurs as a function of a magnetic field applied parallel to the direction of transport. This effect can be explained by boundary conditions for the electron number and the Fermi level in the electron supply layer next to the double barrier structure. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary. In recent years, it has been shown that many modern iterative algorithms (multigrid schemes, multilevel preconditioners, domain decomposition methods etc.) for solving problems resulting from the discretization of PDEs can be interpreted as additive (Jacobi-like) or multiplicative (Gauss-Seidel-like) subspace correction methods. The key to their analysis is the study of certain metric properties of the underlying splitting of the discretization space $V$ into a sum of subspaces $V_j$ and the splitting of the variational problem on $V$ into auxiliary problems on these subspaces. In this paper, we propose a modification of the abstract convergence theory of the additive and multiplicative Schwarz methods, that makes the relation to traditional iteration methods more explicit. The analysis of the additive and multiplicative Schwarz iterations can be carried out in almost the same spirit as in the traditional block-matrix situation, making convergence proofs of multilevel and domain decomposition methods clearer, or, at least, more classical. In addition, we present a new bound for the convergence rate of the appropriately scaled multiplicative Schwarz method directly in terms of the condition number of the corresponding additive Schwarz operator. These results may be viewed as an appendix to the recent surveys [X], [Ys].

    Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we derive a model for the two-phase freezing process of supercooled fluids. Especially, we take density changes along the phase interfaces into account. Thus, besides heat diffusion and the interface phenomena, mass transport and convection in the fluid phase which is given by the full Navier–Stokes equations has to be considered. For the 2D case we implemented an algorithm for the numerical solution of the mathematical model using uniform volume cells for a finite difference discretization. Additionally, the phase boundaries are captured by a surface tracking method. We report on the mathematical model and its derivation, describe the numerical algorithm and present numerical experiments.

    Notes: Abstract The behavioral effects of a wide range of BZ (ω) receptor ligands, including non-selective full (alprazolam, clorazepate, chlordiazepoxide and diazepam) and partial (bretazenil, imidazenil and Ro 19-8022) agonists, and selective BZ-1 (ω 1) (abecarnil, CL 218,872, CL 284,846 and zolpidem) receptor ligands, were compared in the rat elevated plus-maze test. Behaviors recorded comprised the traditional indices of anxiety as well as a number of ethologically derived measures. In addition, the specificity of drug effects was evaluated by measuring spontaneous locomotor activity in activity cages in separate groups of animals. Results showed that all compounds tested not only increased the proportion of time spent and proportion of entries into the open arms of the maze (considered as traditional indices of anxiety) but also affected headdippings and attempts at entry into open arms, which can be considered as indices of risk assessment responses. However, the magnitude of these effects was generally smaller with the BZ-1 (ω 1) selective agents. Moreover, additional differences were apparent on the total number of arm entries measure, which was significantly increased by most full and all partial agonists, but was unaffected by the selective BZ-1 (ω 1) compounds. If it is assumed that total arm entries are contaminated by anxiety, the latter finding indicates a weaker anxiety-reducing potential of selective BZ-1 (ω 1) ligands. Importantly, the increase in total arm entries induced by the non-selective agents was not associated with a similar effect on locomotion as revealed in the actimeter. Finally, anxiolysis produced by the BZ-1 (ω 1) ligands was invariably observed at doses which reduced locomotor activity, suggesting that the anxiolytic-like effects of these compounds are confounded by decreases in locomotor activity.

    Notes: Abstract  Rationale: It has been suggested that different BZ (ω) receptor subtypes may mediate distinct behavioural effects of BZ receptor ligands. Objective: The present study examined this hypothesis further. Methods: The antagonism exerted by the selective BZ1 (ω1) receptor antagonist β-CCT on the pharmacological effects of the selective BZ1 (ω1) receptor agonist zolpidem and the non-selective BZ (ω) receptor agonist diazepam in behavioural, biochemical and electrophysiological experiments was assessed. Results:β-CCT which was devoid of activity per se, antagonized the effects of the non-selective BZ (ω) receptor full agonist diazepam and the selective BZ1 (ω1) receptor full agonist zolpidem against seizures produced by isoniazid, but β-CCT failed to affect their action on seizures produced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), suggesting that BZ2 (ω2) receptors may be primarily involved in the convulsant action of PTZ. In the light/dark test, β-CCT abolished the anxiolytic-like action of diazepam. In tests designed to investigate the central depressant activity of drugs, β-CCT antagonized the sedative effects of diazepam and zolpidem, but failed to modify clearly the myorelaxant effects of diazepam. These differences may be related to the selectivity of β-CCT for BZ1 (ω1) sites as indicated by the preferential displacement of [3H]flumazenil in BZ1 (ω1)-enriched structures as compared to BZ2 (ω2)-enriched structures in the mouse. In in vitro experiments, β-CCT antagonized the potentiation of the GABA-induced Cl– current produced by zolpidem in HEK cells expressing the α1β2γ2 receptor or in cerebellar Purkinje neurones, while it failed to modify the diazepam potentiation at either α3β2γ2 or α5β3γ2 receptor subtypes. Conclusion: These results are consistent with the hypothesis that BZ1 (ω1) receptors play an important role in the anxiolytic and sedative/hypnotic effects of BZ (ω) receptor ligands, whereas activity at BZ2 (ω2) sites might be associated primarily with muscle relaxation.

    Notes: Abstract The present study compared the behavioural effects of acute and chronic (one daily IP injection for 14 days) treatments with the reversible monoamine oxidase-A inhibitors (RIMAs) moclobemide (3 and 10 mg/kg) and befloxatone (0.3 and 1 mg/kg) in the Mouse Defence Test Battery (MDTB) which has been designed for screening anxiolytic and anti-panic drugs. In the MDTB, Swiss mice were confronted with a natural threat (a rat) and situations associated with this threat. Primary measures taken before, during and after rat confrontation were escape attempts, flight, risk assessment (RA) and defensive threat and attack. After acute administration of both compounds, no modification of defensive behaviours were observed. This was in contrast to chronic treatments, where moclobemide (3 and 10 mg/kg) and befloxatone (1 mg/kg) produced a significant reduction in one flight measure (avoidance distance when the rat was approaching). In addition, befloxatone (0.3 and 1 mg/kg), but not moclobemide, increased RA responses when mice were constrained in one part of the apparatus facing the rat, which remained at a constant distance. No other drug effects were observed with either compound. Although these behavioural profiles are consistent with an anxiolytic-like effect, the finding of an action upon a limited number of defence responses suggests a weaker anxiolytic-like potential compared to that of classical anxiolytics. However, in view of previous data with panic-modulating compounds on flight behaviours in the MDTB, the present results are in line with clinical results showing that moclobemide is effective in panic disorders and suggest that befloxatone may have some efficacy in the clinical management of panic.

    Notes: Abstract Delayed reproductive death, the appearance of colonies with a reduced cell density (impaired colonies) and the number of giant cells per colony were investigated in murine fibrosarcoma cells after irradiation with 3 to 9 Gy of x-rays. Radiation survivors were replated after reaching confluence, which occurred after 13 to 15 doublings; this procedure was repeated three times. The replating efficiency decreased in a dose-dependent manner, the survivors of 9 Gy achieving only 30% of the plating efficiency of unirradiated cells. After the third replating, i.e. after 40 to 45 doublings, the plating efficiency of the survivors approached that of the controls. The median colony size of the survivors showed a similar dose-dependent decrease, which was pronounced after the first replating but still remained significant after the third replating. The fraction of impaired colonies was increased to more than 30% in 9-Gy survivors, and though abating, the increase was still significant even after the third replating. Evidence of residual damage was also provided by the presence of giant cells. For instance, after 6 Gy irradiation and 13 to 15 doublings, the proportion of colonies with giant cells was 60%, decreasing only to 45% after 40 to 45 doublings. The number of giant cells per colony was 1.4 in colonies arising immediately after 6 Gy, decreasing to 0.9 after the third replating. These results suggest that the proliferative capacity of surviving cells is depressed even longer than their clonogenic capacity.

    Notes: Abstract We describe tensor product type techniques to derive robust solvers for anisotropic elliptic model problems on rectangular domains in ℝ d . Our analysis is based on the theory of additive subspace correction methods and applies to finite element and prewavelet schemes. We present multilevel- and prewavelet-based methods that are robust for anisotropic diffusion operators with additional Helmholtz term. Furthermore, the resulting convergence rates are independent of the discretization level. Beside their theoretical foundation, we also report on the results of various numerical experiments to compare the different methods.
