Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The specification and the layout of the booster synchrotron for SPring-8 were decided. The synchrotron is designed to accelerate electron or positron beams from 1 to 8 GeV with a repetition cycle of 1 Hz. The construction of the synchrotron was started in 1993. First, one bending, one quadrupole, and one sextupole magnet were made and the results of the magnetic field measurement were acquired. Two septum, one bump, and one kicker magnets for the beam extraction have been made, the field measurement and a few improvements have progressed. The high power test of the first rf cavity was finished successfully. The calibration test of the button position monitor with the signal treatment circuits is advanced now. The residual components of the synchrotron are designed and constructed, and the commissioning of the synchrotron will start in 1996. This paper presents the first measurement of each component. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Effects of oxygen partial pressure PO2 during low temperature postheat treatments on the superconducting properties of silver-sheathed Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy tapes were investigated. The critical temperature Tc of the resulting tapes changes systematically with PO2. This variation of Tc is attributed to the change of electronic carrier (hole) concentration by the observation of oxygen K-edge absorption spectra. The intragranular critical current density Jc is essentially unaffected by the heat treatment, while deterioration in grain connectivity is observed in the specimens treated in reduced-oxygen atmospheres. The change of anisotropy in Jc with respect to crystallographic orientations is also quite small for the variation of PO2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The construction of the SPring-8 booster synchrotron was started in 1993. The synchrotron has a two-fold symmetric lattice composed of 40 FODO cells. There are 30 normal cells and 2 straight sections, and it is composed of 64 bending magnets. The integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets were measured, and adequate results were obtained. The power supply of the bending magnets, which must be operated following a trapezoidal excitation-curve of the output current, is being constructed and tested now. This report presents the results of the integral values of the magnetic field of the bending magnets and the excitation-curve measurement of the power supply. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Artificial superlattices consisting of antiferroelectric PbZrO3 (PZO) and ferroelectric PbTiO3 (PTO) have been fabricated by a multi-ion-beam sputtering technique. The epitaxial PZO and PTO layers were sequentially grown on (100)Pt/MgO substrates at a low substrate temperature of 415 °C with a periodicity from 5 to 100 perovskite unit cells. X-ray diffraction studies revealed the superlattice structures with a-axis oriented PTO layers on a-axis oriented PZO layers. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the superlattice films were enhanced with increasing periodicity. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The authors examined the regulatory effects of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) on granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-, interleukin-3 (IL-3)- or macrophage colony stimulating factor (M-CSF)-induced gene expression of the low affinity receptor for IgE (Fc ε RII) on human monocytes and GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced soluble Fc ε RII (sFc ε RII) release from monocytes. The expression of GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII on the surface of monocytes was reduced by TNF-α. The present analysis was designed to examine whether or not TNF-α could suppress GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and enhance the release of sFc ε RII induced by these cytokines. The addition of TNF-α to monocyte cultures with GM-CSF, IL-3 or M-CSF significantly reduced Fc ε RII expression on the surface of monocytes and significantly increased sFc ε RII release from monocytes. These results suggest that TNF-α-dependent reduction of GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII expression on the surface of monocytes resulted, at least in part, from the suppression of Fc ε RII mRNA and the enhancement of sFc ε RII release.

Notes: A 39-year-old Japanese woman suffering from plaque stage of mycosis fungoides (MF) developed Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE) on her face. KVE appeared 1 month after commencing skin electron beam irradiation (SEBI), when the total irradiation had reached 46 Gy. Natural killer (NK) cell activity in the peripheral blood was abnormally low, but returned to normal after 1 year. However, lymphocyte reactivity to mitogens was persistently low. These facts suggested that the KVE in our patient developed because of abnormally low NK cell reactivity probably induced by radiation therapy.

Notes: Two round robins (RRs) of the quantitative phase analysis (QPA) of silicon nitrides (Si3N4) using the mean normalized intensity (MNI) method and the Rietveld method were conducted as one of the projects for establishing standard methods of characterizing advanced ceramic materials. Accuracy and precision of three techniques, namely the MNI method using peak-height intensity (MNI+P), the MNI method using integrated intensity (MNI+I) and the Rietveld method (R), were tested. Precision of the methods was found to follow the order R 〈 MNI+I 〈 MNI+P in the first RR and MNI+I 〈 R 〈 MNI+P in the second RR. Resulting accuracy of the methods was ranked R ∼ MNI+P 〈 MNI+I in the first RR and MNI+P 〈 R ∼ MNI+I in the second. The MNI+P method, which relies upon a simple and routine procedure for measuring peak-height intensities, gave the best precision in both RRs. Both the accuracy and the precision of the Rietveld method were the worst among the three techniques in the first RR. They were, however, significantly improved in the second RR. Although the precision of the MNI+I method was the worst in the second RR, it was better than that in the first, and the accuracy was the best in both the first and the second RR. The degree of improvement from the first to the second RR, in both precision and accuracy, was MNI+P 〈 MNI+I 〈 R, coinciding with the ease of these three techniques in reverse order. This result is largely due to (i) a new protocol for experimental and analytical parameters and (ii) improved skill of the participants in data analysis in the second RR. Magnitudes and signs of the observed errors could be interpreted through results of the theoretical studies.

Notes: The beam commissioning of the SPring-8 synchrotron was started in December 1996. In the first ten days, the coarse tuning of the pulse magnets for beam injection from the linac, and the excitation pattern of the dipole and the quadrupole magnets, were accomplished during energy ramping of the beam. The acceleration of the beam up to 8 GeV proceeded smoothly. From January to February 1997, the fine-tuning of the synchrotron was continued and the operating parameters of all of the synchrotron equipment were decided.
