Notes: Abstract Twenty-eight unrelated persons heterozygous for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) were screened to assess the frequency and nature of major structural rearrangements at the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor gene in Korean FH patients. Genomic DNA was analyzed by Southern blot hybridization with probes encompassing exons 1–18 of the LDL receptor gene. Two different deletion mutations (FH29 and FH110) were detected in three FH patients (10.7%). Each of the mutations was characterized by the use of exon-specific probes and detailed restriction mapping mediated by long-PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Mutation FH29 was a 3.83-kb deletion extending from intron 6 to intron 8 and FH110 was a 5.71-kb deletion extending from intron 8 to intron 12. In FH29, the translational reading frame was preserved and the deducible result was a cysteine-rich A and B repeat truncated protein that might be unable to bind LDL but would continue to bind β-VLDL. FH110 is presumed to be a null allele, since the deletion shifts the reading frame and results in a truncated protein that terminates in exon 13. Sequence analysis revealed that both deletions have occurred between two Alu-repetitive sequences that are in the same orientation. This suggested that in these patients the deletions were caused by an unequal crossing over event following mispairing of two Alu sequences on different chromatids during meiosis. Moreover, in both deletions, the recombinations were related to an Alu sequence in intron 8 and the deletion breakpoints are found within a specific sequence, 27 bp in length. This supports the hypothesis that this region might have some intrinsic instability, and act as one of the important factors in large recombinational rearrangements.

Notes: In several European countries efforts are undertaken, in particular with regard to fixed industrial installations and transport of dangerous substances, to quantify the “societal risk” (SR) of accidents that may cause more than one victim at a time. This article explores the nature of such efforts. SR-models are essentially ways to structure the distribution of potential social costs of decisions about hazardous activities (e.g., costs of risk reduction, of land use forgone). First, the various ways to describe SR quantitatively, and to set limits to SR will be presented in short. Next, using a scheme developed by Fischhoff and colleagues, the various approaches will be placed in broad categories of reaching acceptable risk decisions: bootstrapping, formal analysis, and professional judgment. Each of the three categories offers a particular appreciation of the risks as ‘external costs’. This has important political implications. In the discussion it is argued that local SR-limits, by the very nature of SR, should be set in a way that creates consistency with any potential supra-local interests involved. Second, particular attention is paid to the validity of claims that SR-limits should reflect a strong risk aversion.

Notes: The neutrophilic dermatoses are significantly associated with myeloid malignancies. We now describe the clinical and histological features of 11 patients with these disorders, namely Sweet's syndrome in three cases, pyoderma gangrenosum in two, and neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis in one; there were also five others which could not be categorised as recognised entities. Our observations, as well as those from a review of the literature, support the hypothesis that in the neutrophilic dermatoses associated with myeloid malignancy, a common mechanism may he involved.

Notes: The Pohang Light Source (PLS) Project is now in its final year of the construction phase. The machine consists of a full energy (2 GeV) linear accelerator injector, a storage ring with a 12-period TBA structure, and 32 eventual beamlines from insertion devices and bending magnets. The commissioning of the injector linac was completed in June 1994. The overall commissioning of the PLS is expected to be completed by the end of 1994. The facility will provide high brightness, tunable radiation in a wide spectral range up to 30 keV of photon energy, and will serve national and international users starting in mid-1995. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An investigation on the effects of oxygen mixing in the sputtering gas and rapid thermal annealing on the electrical properties of radio frequency sputtered silicon oxide films has been carried out. The conductivity of the oxide film decreases as the concentration of oxygen in the sputtering gas increases, and also for rapid thermal anneal temperatures higher than 900 °C. Transport mechanisms for films annealed for 50 and 200 s were found to be that of Schottky emission and space charge limited conduction, respectively. From the capacitance versus voltage measurements, it was concluded that the improvement in the oxide quality of the annealed films was not related to the reduction of the interface trapped charge density. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A study of the densification of radio frequency sputtered silicon oxide films by rapid thermal annealing was undertaken using both physical (etching, refractive index, and density calculation) and structural [infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)] techniques. It was discovered that the etch rate of annealed films is reduced drastically, compared with as-deposited films and that the refractive index increases with increasing annealing temperature (Tp) or annealing time (tp). The film density also increases as Tp or tp increases and we conclude that annealed films have become denser as compared to the as-deposited films. We also suggest that increasing tp would be more efficient than raising Tp for film densification. Infrared spectrum analysis results show that with increasing Tp or tp, strain in the films has become more relaxed, and a significant amount of the surface hydroxyl groups in the annealed films was removed. The XPS analysis results show that a substantial amount of suboxide species exist within 30–40 Å of the oxide at the Si–SiO2 interface and that the Si–SiO2 interface is not abrupt. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate that Nd3+:ethylene glycol can be used as an amplifier gain medium for a Nd3+:YLF laser. It has been known that Nd3+:liquid is hard to use as a gain medium due to fluorescence quenching. However, we could use Nd3+:ethylene glycol as a gain medium by using a new amplification system, and we also measured the stimulated emission cross section of Nd3+:ethylene glycol. A maximum gain of ∼2 was obtained in our experimental setup, and the stimulated emission cross section of Nd3+:ethylene glycol was measured to be 1.5(±0.5) ×10−19 cm2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Since microvascular procedures are gaining in importance in reconstructive surgery, the need for a specialised monitoring system for detection of vascular compromise, is obvious and storage of data is obligatory. Such a system should be reliable and easy to use. For monitoring purposes, the skin temperature and laser Doppler flowmetry have been elected as the devices which have proven to be the most reliable, with good sensitivity and specitivity. In our computer system these devices can be displayed continuously and simultaneously over a 24-h period. Data of different patients can be stored easily and rapid detection of compromised circulation is achieved. In 1991, 31 microvascular procedures were monitored using this computer system. With this system we have achieved data acquisition, displayed patient's microvascular status and decreased the workload upon nursing and medical staff, this has resulted in an early detection of compromised circulation.
