Notes: Abstract  The activity of LIGA technique was started in the fall of 1993 at National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), some primary results have been obtained. Micro gearwheels were produced by deep-etch lithography using Hefei light source. The largest diameter of gearwheel is 200 μm, the smallest one only 35 μm, both with thickness of 50 μm. The first metallic structure of nickel was fabricated recently. The mask used in experiments was made by ourselves, it is a composite of kapton membrane as a mask blank, and gold as an absorber.

Notes: The effective barrier height for electron tunneling is measured across the aqueous capacitor junction composed of a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip and a surface. At a junction distance of a water monolayer, the barrier height strongly varies with the polarity and the magnitude of the applied junction voltage. This monolayer barrier height increases with an increasing positive value of the sample bias, while it does not for the negative bias. Such asymmetric variation of the tunneling barrier height manifests the influence of water molecular geometry on electron tunneling. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A theory is developed for the electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECR) plasmas, and an experiment is carried out to compare the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements. Several points are noteworthy from the theory and from experiment for electron temperature. First, electron temperature is inversely proportional to the square root of the chamber pressure. Second, electron temperature in a high-pressure (p(approximately-greater-than)1 mTorr) chamber is almost constant as the microwave power increases. Third, two components of electron temperature are observed in a low-pressure (p〈1 mTorr) chamber. Fourth, energetic electrons are mostly concentrated around the ECR region. Fifth, overall electron temperature may display anisotropic behavior in a low-pressure chamber. A theoretical model of an ion acceleration mechanism deep inside ECR plasmas is developed, based on the ambipolar diffusion. It is found that the mean ion energy is proportional to the electron temperature and inversely proportional to the square of the density variation length. Therefore, the ion energy in a uniform plasma is negligibly small. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pure and ZnTi-doped spherical barium ferrite particles were prepared using two different methods: semicoprecipitation and ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method was more effective in controlling particle shape. Particle size was in between 0.27 and 0.3 μm. Coercivity and saturation magnetization were in the range of 1000 to 5000 Oe and 49 to 53 emu/g, respectively. Crystallization of amorphous Ba–Fe–O spherical precursors occurs at a lower temperature than Ba–Fe–Zn–Ti–O precursors. ΔM measurement shows that magnetic interaction in spherical barium ferrite tape is weaker than hexagonal platelet barium ferrite. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We show that ultrahigh-vacuum low-energy electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy can be used to image residual uniaxial strain fields on (001) surfaces of SiGe heterostructures. We find that the surface crosshatch morphology on these films is highly correlated with large spatial variations in the residual uniaxial strain fields, confirming the importance of local strain fields in the formation of crosshatch. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract An integrated precision inspection system has been developed for manufacturing moulds having CAD defined features. The techniques of precision measurement are implemented for CAD/CAI integration for moulds having sculptured surfaces with some basic features, such as, holes, slots and bosses. Features to be inspected are chosen in the CAD environment, and inspection planning is performed for each feature. The sampling-point strategies are: uniform distribution, curvature dependent distribution, or hybrid distribution of the two depending on the complexity of the sculptured surface. Line and plane features are divided into subintervals, and the measurement points are distributed at random positions in the subinterval. Prime number subintervals are considered for a circle feature, in order to avoid possible periodic distortion of the measurement features. The measurement path planning is performed considering collision avoidance and coordinate matching between the coordinates. The output of the planning is the machine code for a specific CMM having CNC capability. The machine code is downloaded to a specific CMM, and the measurement results are fed back to the computer. A new algorithm, called MINIMAXSURF, is developed to evaluate the form error precisely for sculptured surfaces. The algorithm considers the radius of the touch probe and evaluates the profile tolerance successfully by removing the unavoidable setup errors. The developed measurement system has been applied to real moulds, demonstrating high performance and accuracy.

Notes: Abstract RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) markers generated by 15 arbitrary decamers were used to determine the frequency of DNA polymorphism in 39 watermelon [Citrullus lanantus (Thunb.) Mansf.] germplasms. Of the 15 primers tested, all except 1 (primer 275) directed the amplification of polymorphic products. A total of 162 amplification products were generated across all 39 genotypes. Among the 162 fragments, 35 (21%) appeared to be reliable polymorphic markers. The mean value by marker difference in this comparison was 0.24, and the highest, 0.69. Eight RAPD markers could be utilized in the unique variety discrimination 8 watermelon genotypes. From the phenograms constructed by UPGMA based on the comparison of RAPD markers, four clusters were resolved. Each group was also characterized and identified with morphological and genetic characteristics for each genotype. The free sugars of the edible parts of watermelons were analyzed by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). Results from the phylogenetic analysis of band sharing data were consistent with sweetness as measured by HPLC. In conclusion, RAPD assays can be used for providing alternative markers for identifying genotypes and quantitative characteristics in watermelon.
