    Notes: We examined the antinociceptive effect of intrathecally administered magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) in rats, using acute pain models including mechanical pressure, heat and subcutaneous formalin injection. According to the locomotion test 10 μl of 6.2% MgSO4 did not produce motor paralysis. At the same dose, responses to pressure and heat were intact, compared with controls given saline. MgSO4 produced depression of pain responses only after the first 10 min in the formalin test. Our studies indicated that MgSO4 did not show remarkable antinociceptive effects in acute pain models.

    Notes: Somatosensory evoked potential, locomotion and vocalisation upon tail pinch in rats was studied in order to determine whether intrathecal magnesium sulphate administration causes spinal anaesthesia. In Wistar rats with indwelling intrathecal catheters, cortical somatosensory evoked potential was recorded following stimulation via electrodes inserted into the hind paw under chloral hydrate anaesthesia before and after intrathecal administration of 10 μl of either magnesium sulphate (12.3% or 24.6%) or lignocaine (4% or 8%). Locomotion and vocalisation after tail pinch were tested following intrathecal administration of the same two drugs in conscious rats. Somatosensory evoked potential amplitude was diminished after administration of lignocaine (p 〈 0.05) but did not change after magnesium sulphate. Latency of P1 was increased by lignocaine and by magnesium sulphate 12.3% (p 〈 0.05). Although lower extremity paralysis was observed in both groups, its duration with magnesium sulphate was much longer than with lignocaine. Vocalisation was recognised after magnesium sulphate 12.3%, but was not observed after lignocaine 8% during paralysis (p 〈 0.05). We believe that magnesium sulphate caused motor paralysis, but not complete analgesia.

    Notes: Abstract. In this note we treat the functional equation $f(cz)=a(z)f(z)+b(z)$ , where c is a constant $|c|\ne1$ , 0, and a(z), b(z) are rational functions. It is shown that no transcendental meromorphic solution of the functional equation satisfies an algebraic differential equation with rational coefficients.

    Notes: Abstract Positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) materials have become very important components, and among these materials barium titanate compounds make up the most important group. When properly processed these compounds show a high PTCR at the Curie temperature (the transition temperature from the ferroelectric tetragonal phase to the paraelectric cube phase). In the first half of this paper literature related to the resistivity-temperature behaviour is discussed. As explained by the well established Heywang model, the PTCR effect is caused by trapped electrons at the grain boundaries. From reviewing experimental results in the literature it is clear that the PTCR effect can not be explained by assuming only one kind of electron trap. It is concluded that as well as barium vacancies, adsorbed oxygen as 3d-elements can act as electron traps. In the second half of this paper, the influence of the processing parameters on the PTCR related properties is discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the phenomenon that the conductivity and grain size decrease abruptly with increasing donor concentration above ∼ 0.3 at%. Several models explaining this phenomenon are discussed and apparent discrepancies in experimental data are explained.

    Notes: Abstract High thermal conductive AlN ceramics doped with Y2O3 were produced by sintering the powders obtained after applying a carbon coating to the surface of AlN powder grains. During sintering at 1800°C for 1 hour, the carbon reacts with the surface of the AlN grains by carbothermal-reduction of Al2O3, and also with the Al2Y4O9 intermediate phase to form AlN, Y2O3 and CO. By adding 0.56 mass% of carbon, almost all the Al2Y4O9 is reacted and the thermal conductivity increases from 184 W/(m · K) to 224 W/(m · K). Further carbon addition decreases the thermal conductivity and also the final sintered density.
