Notes: Abstract Additive contributions to the Seebeck and Peltier coefficients made by nonequilibrium longitudinal optical phonons have been calculated. The results obtained are valid for any temperature and applicable to polar nondegenerate semiconductors with low carrier concentrations. The calculated components of the thermoelectric coefficients are exponentially small in the low-temperature domain and reach a maximum at k BT∼ħω 0. In materials with a large carrier mass and strong electron-phonon coupling the contribution of optical phonons to the Seebeck coefficient can exceed 1 mV/K.

Notes: Abstract The electron relaxation time on acoustical phonons, the electrical conductivity, and the phonon-drag thermopower of a semiconductor superlattice with quasi-two-dimensional quantum wells are calculated. The inelasticity of the scattering of charge carriers is taken into account. It is shown that the phonon-drag thermopower of a superlattice can be an order of magnitude greater than the corresponding thermopower of a bulk semiconductor.

Notes: The static deformation electron density, Laplacian of the electron density and critical points in the electron density were analyzed in topaz Al2[SiO4]F2, using high-precision X-ray diffraction data. The electron deformation density, positive values of the Laplacian at (3,−1) bond critical points and the net atomic charges indicate a closed-shell-type interaction in the polyhedra. Anion valence-shell charge depletions are revealed. Maxima in the Laplacian of the electron density are displaced towards the close-packed plane owing to the mutual repulsion of the anion valence shells. The relationship between the topological features of the electron density and the close-packing concept is discussed. Shifts of the critical points from the internuclear vectors reflect the strain in the structure.

Notes: Abstract Laser flash photolysis was used to study the photochemistry of Feaq 3+ complex in aqueous solutions with additions ofN,N-dimethylformamide. An electronic absorption band with a maximum at 380 nm belonging to the*CH2(CH3)NCHO radical was recorded. The recombination (or disproportionation) rate constants of*CH2(CH3)NCHO radicals and their reaction with the Feaq 3+ complex were estimated to be (3.4±0.8)×109 M−1s−1 and (4.3±0.6)×107 M−1s−1, respectively. The mechanism of radical formation is discussed.

Notes: Conclusion Thus, we have developed an algorithm and program to calculate fields of moisture concentration in a laminated plate for steady external temperatures and moisture contents. A test calculation and comparison of some of the findings with previous results demonstrated the accuracy of the program for solving a number of diffusion problems. For example, the program can be used to evaluate the life of the moisture-protective properties of polymer products, as well as to model moisture absorption in fiber composites. Curves of moisture concentration were calculated for a unidirectionally reinforced (with organic fibers) plastic at different relative humidities. We also calculated sorption curves and isotherms, which were shown to agree satisfactorily with previous empirical curves. It was shown that it is possible to approximately evaluate the sorption behavior of a unidirectionally reinforced fiber composite by means of a three-layer model and to analyze the stability of the result against an increase in the number of layers. For the two-component composite examined here, sorption behavior deviates from the classical behavior described by Fick's law — although the components of the composite obey this law. The algorithm and program that were developed make it possible to evaluate the kinetics of moisture absorption in complex composite systems and determine the distribution of moisture among and within the components. The study described here was conducted under grant 93.176 from the Latvian Science Council.

Notes: Abstract The influence of intrinsic noise and signal drift on the accuracy of a static fiber-optic gyrocompass (FOG) is analyzed theoretically, and a method is proposed to determine the errors of the gyrocompass experimentally. From this it is possible to choose an optimum algorithm for measuring the FOG signal and calculating the direction angle with respect to north. Real measurements of the accuracy of an operating gyrocompass yield errors of order 1° (rms).

Notes: The photochemistry of IrCl62- complex in simple alcohols have been studied using laser-flash photolysis. Single electron transfer from the solvent molecule to the light-excited complex has been shown to be the primary photochemical process. Quantum yields of the photoreduction of IrCl62- complex and the rate constants of its reaction with hydroxyalkyl radicals were determined at 200-330 K. Deviations of the rate constants from Debye-Smoluchowski equation for diffusion-controlled reactions are discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet: 30: 711-719, 1998
