Notes: A gate passivation technique for modulation-doped-field-effect-transistors has been proposed and demonstrated. This technique incorporates an antidot-patterned (net-shaped), polymer passivation layer deposited between the gate metal and the heterojunction wafer. Characterization results of the device with the patterned passivation layer show that independent engineering of the threshold voltage and the transconductance has been achieved. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The aim of this study was to make clear the age-hardening mechanism in a dental high carat gold alloy. For this purpose, age-hardening behaviour of a commercial dental high carat gold alloy, 65·5wt% Au–14·0wt% Ag–10·0wt% Cu–8·9wt% Pt, was investigated by means of hardness testing, X-ray diffraction study and scanning electron microscopy. Age-hardening was generated by the coherency strain resulting from the transformation of the α single phase to the Ag-rich α1 phase and the AuCu I type ordered phase. The coherency strain seemed to be associated with the nucleation of the AuCu ordered structure initially, and then was brought about with the simultaneous formation of the Ag-rich α1 phase and the AuCu I type ordered phase. Hardening was attributed mainly to the very fine coherent precipitates of a lamellar structure composed of the Ag-rich α1 phase and the AuCu I type ordered phase at grain boundaries, and softening, which occurred following prolonged ageing, was due to the coarsening of the fine lamellar structure by releasing the strain at the interfaces of the adjacent lamellae.

Notes: Abstract To produce xylobiose from xylan, high-level expression of an endoxylanase gene from Bacillus sp. was carried out in Bacillus subtilis DB104. A 1.62-kb SmaI DNA fragment, coding for an endoxylanase of Bacillus sp., was ligated into the Escherichia coli/B. subtilis shuttle vector pJH27Δ88, producing pJHKJ4, which was subsequently transformed into B. subtilis DB104. A maximum endoxylanase activity of 105 U/ml was obtained from the supernatant of B. subtilis DB104 harboring pJHKJ4. The endoxylanase was purified to homogeneity by ion-exchange chromatography and the production profile of xylooligosaccharides from xylan by the endoxylanase was examined by HPLC with a carbohydrate analysis column. Xylobiose was the major product from xylan at 40 °C and its proportion in the xylan hydrolyzates increased with the reaction time; at 12 h, over 60% of the reaction products was xylobiose. These results suggest that xylobiose, which has a stimulatory effect on the selective growth of the intestinal bacterium Bifidobacterium, can be mass-produced effectively by the endoxylanase of Bacillus sp. cloned in B. subtilis.

Notes: Abstract The endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption in juvenile spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax sp.) was measured to test the effects of sudden changes in salinity on the metabolic activity. Mean oxygen consumption rates of this euryhaline fish decreased by 13.5 to 16.0% and 25.3 to 36.4% when they were transferred from 31.5 to 15‰ seawater and to fresh water (0‰), respectively. The maximum rate of oxygen consumption was observed between 18:00 and 19:00 hrs local time, 1 to 2 h before sunset, even though they were kept in constant darkness. The peaks of oxygen consumption occurred in 23.2- and 23.3-h intervals, which correspond with a circadian rhythm, as revealed by maximum entropy spectral analysis. A markedly weakened rhythm in oxygen consumption occurred from 8 to 10 d after onset of the experiments. This study indicates that spotted sea bass can withstand sudden drops in salinity from 31.5‰ to fresh water, and yet maintain a regular though somewhat dampened endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption.

Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivities of zeotropic mixtures of R125 (CF3CHF2) and R134a (CF3CH2F) in the liquid phase are reported. Thermal conductivities have been measured by a transient hot-wire method with one bare platinum wire. Measurements have been carried out in the temperature range of 233 to 323 K and in the pressure range of 2 to 20 MPa. The dependence of thermal conductivity on temperature, pressure, and composition of the binary mixture is presented. Measured thermal conductivity data are correlated as a function of temperature, pressure, and overall composition of the mixture. The uncertainty of our measurements was estimated to be better than 2%.

Notes: Abstract A procedure is proposed for determining the effect of the displacement of a retaining wall on the stress-strain state of the mass swelling soil adjacent to it and the lateral pressure acting on it using the finite-element method. The results of calculations performed in accordance with the method in question and data derived from a field experiment are compared.

Notes: Abstract The Escherichia colirnpA gene encodes C5 protein, the protein component of RNase P. The rnpA49 mutation renders the C5 protein thermosensitive, which results in thermosensitivity of RNase P function. The chromosomal DNA region from Brevibacterium albidum that complements the rnpA49 mutation was analysed. The gene capable of complementing the growth defect of an rnpA49 mutant strain at nonpermissive temperature was identified as the gene for an arginine tRNA with anticodon CCG by a deletion analysis combined with complementation assays. Transcription of the arginine tRNA gene carried on a multicopy plasmid was correlated with the complementation of the rnpA49 mutation, indicating that the gene product is indeed responsible for complementation of the rnpA49 mutation.

Notes: Abstract The effect of the non-ionic surfactants on the ethanol fermentation was greatly dependent on the surfactant added. While Tween 20 and Tween 80 slightly enhanced ethanol fermentation, Triton X-100 which exhibited the inghest increase in the enzymatic saccharification had a negative effect on the ethanol fermentation. The negative effect of Triton X-100 on ethanol production was the most pronounced when the cellulosic hydrolyzates were used. Tween 80 showed the best performance for the ethanol production from steam exploded wood hydrolyzate.
