    Notes: Abstract. —The mechanism of Kaiser effect was studied with the aid of a damage model for rock. Recognizing that the AE counts are transient elastic waves due to local damage of the rock, the quantitative relation between AE counts and statistical distribution of the local strength of the rock has been established. Subsequently, according to Damage Theory, an expression for Kaiser Effect under uniaxial stress state was derived from the model. This is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

    Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of GMDP on angiogenesis in vivo and as a modulator of human umbilical vein endothelial cell proliferation, cell surface antigen expression and cell adhesion in vitro.¶Materials: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), fertilized white leghorn chicken eggs, antibodies against adhesion molecules and glucosaminylmuramyl dipeptide (GMDP).¶Treatment: GMDP [0.01–100 μg/ml] applied to cell cultures for 6–72 h and to the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) for four days.¶Methods: Angiogenic activity of GMDP in vivo was assessed using the CAM assay; HUVEC proliferation was measured by tritiated thymidine incorporation and cell cycle studies; cell surface antigen expression by indirect immunofluorescence and flow cytometry; cell adhesion by quantification of [3H]-thymidine labeled leukocyte adherence to HUVEC monolayers. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and if necessary was followed by Duncan's multiple range test for variables.¶Results: GMDP induced [3H]-thymidine incorporation in a concentration- and time-dependent manner (p 〈 0.003) and significantly increased the proportion of cells in the S phase of the cell cycle (p 〈 0.03). It weakly augmented the expression of ICAM-1 and CD31 but not adhesion of leukocytes to HUVEC monolayers GMDP was not angiogenic in the CAM assay.¶Conclusions: GMDP can modulate endothelial cell activity without the induction of angiogenesis in vivo which may have implications for its use as a therapeutic agent.

    Notes: Abstract. ClC-2 belongs to a large family of chloride channels and its expression in certain cell types is associated with the appearance of swelling-activated chloride (Cl−) currents. In the present report, we examined the hypothesis that ClC-2 plays a role in regulatory volume decrease by expressing ClC-2 in Sf9 cells using the baculovirus system. First, we showed that ClC-2 protein expression is associated with appearance of a Cl− conductance which is activated by hypo-osmotic shock and can be distinguished from swelling-activated chloride currents endogenous to Sf9 cells on the basis of its pharmacology and specific inhibition by an anti-ClC-2 antibody. Second, we show that the rate of regulatory volume decrease is significantly enhanced in Sf9 cells expressing ClC-2 protein. Hence, our data support the hypothesis that ClC-2 is capable of mediating regulatory volume decrease.

    Notes: Two distinct azurins named azurin-I and azurin-II were isolated from Alcaligenes xylosoxidans GIFU 1051 (AzG-I and AzG-II). They have been purified and crystallized. The crystals of AzG-I belong to the monoclinic crystal system, space group C2, unit-cell parameters a = 130.6, b = 54.4, c = 74.7 Å, β = 96.1°. The crystals of AzG-II belong to the tetragonal crystal system, space group P4122 or P4322, unit-cell parameters a = b = 52.6, c = 100.7 Å. Both crystals diffract up to 2.0 Å resolution and are suitable for X-ray crystallographic studies.

    Notes: Plastocyanin from Silene (SilPc) expressed in E. coli has been crystallized in a form suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis by a macroseeding method using ammonium sulfate as a precipitant in acetate buffer (pH = 5.5). These crystals belong to the trigonal space group P3121 or P3221 with lattice parameters a = b = 76.6, c = 65.5 Å, indicating an asymmetric unit containing two plastocyanin molecules. The crystals diffracted to at least 2.0 Å.

    Notes: Conversion gain bandwidth and noise characteristics are reported for lattice-cooled superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 hot-electron bolometers acting as low-power, wide-bandwidth heterodyne mixers at 75 and 585 GHz. Near 77 K, these mixers show intrinsic conversion gain as high as −16 dB using ∼1 μW of local oscillator power. The measured gain bandwidth is well described by a single Lorentzian with −3 dB frequency of 5–9 GHz. Measurements of output noise combined with conversion gain indicate an optimal input noise temperature of ∼5000 K, significantly lower than calculations predict. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A nonmechanical method for fabricating a metallic narrow constriction between two electrodes using electrochemical deposition is described. The width of the constriction can be adjusted by slowly dissolving metal atoms away or redepositing atoms onto the constriction which can be controlled flexibly by the electrodes' potentials. Well-defined plateaus near the integer numbers of the conductance quantum have been observed in these constrictions at room temperature. Since no mechanical movements are involved, this method has the potential of fabricating nanoconstrictions with long term stability. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Rapidly solidified samples of Nd9.5Fe84.5B6 with and without 3 at. % TiC were prepared by melt spinning and melt extraction and then annealed in vacuum (3×10−6 Torr) at temperatures from 600 to 750 °C. For alloys melt spun under similar conditions, the overquenched state was achieved at wheel speeds 〉10 m/s for the TiC added alloy while 〉20 m/s was necessary without TiC. The overquenched samples contained a smaller fraction of α-Fe in smaller grains than the undercooled samples where Fe dendrites formed near the free surface during solidification. These Fe dendrites were not removed by annealing. In addition, large orientated 2-14-1 grains nucleated on the Fe dendrites. This combination is detrimental to the magnetic properties. The addition of TiC results in improved control of the microstructure over a larger fraction of the ribbon volume enhancing the magnetic properties. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
